Scorcher at Lake Jacomo

C Scow racing wasnt the only thing that was hot at Lake Jacomo, KC, Mo. The temperature was in the low 100s with the heat index hovering around 106 degrees. Twenty boats were on the starting line with seven lakes represented; Lake Jacomo,MO (KC); Lake Lotawana, MO (MO); Lake Shawnee,KS (SN); Lake Davenport, IA (LD); Lake Fenton, MI (LF); Keystone Lake, OK (OK). and Lake Winnebago, MO (WO).

Chris Craig (LF 1) got an excellent start in the first race, tacked to port, put it in cruise control and the rest of the fleet could barely read his sail number when he finished. Second race had Chris looking in his rear view mirror more often. Kevin Kuse (KC 227) and George Silvey (WO-7) were close on his tail. George and his boat came out of retirement and it appeared that neither he nor his boat had lost a step. In the third race Don MacClymont ghosted by Chris to win the race. Time for a beer and some Kansas City Barbecue.

Sunday morning dawned with temperatures in the low nineties (nice and cool!) and wind from the southeast. To see if we were alert the race committee gave us a starboard course. With the usual shouting and screaming at the first weather everyone finally figured out which way to round the mark. This time it was Gordon McBride (MO 66), Rob Reid (MO 3) and Mike Rooney (SN 38) who were in hot pursuit of Chris as he crossed the line in first. It was evident now that Chris was going to win the regatta, however three boats were in a heated battle for second. MacClymont, McBride and Silvey were all within a point of each other. In the fifth race Chris got buried at the start and struggled to a fifth with Ken Kuse (KC 27) winning the race. Don MacClymont finished second (by a nose) thereby finishing second overall, George Silvey finished third overall, and Kevin Kuse came thru the back door for fourth place as Gordon McBride slipped to fifth.

We had several of our first year sailors in this event and the winner of the Novice Award for the 2000 summer regatta was John Maddux.

Time now for more Beer and tales of What Ifs. It was a great regatta!

Hopefully well all get together in a few weeks at the Lotawana Regatta. Maybe itll be just a tad cooler.

See you there.
