| Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) for 12th grade English - Sec. 110.45(b) (1)(A - F): The proposed activities provide students with opportunities to write in various forms, including newspaper editorials, semi-scientific reports, and critical essays. Students are expected to write in a voice and style appropriate to the assignment and to write clearly, logically, and with support as needed. (2)(A, B, C): The class activity involves the students in brainstorming as a group. The students collaborate to solve a hypothetical problem and present ideas informally to the class. (3)(A - E): As in all other activities at this grade level, the students will be responsible for producing error-free work and using sophisticated sentence structures to convey meaning. |

| (4)(A - D, G, H): Students use the organizational, brainstorming, and writing activities to formulate questions and clarify ideas. After compiling information from the book and from internet sources as needed, the students write reports or essays, or make verbal presentations, and draw conclusions. (8)(A, B, D, F - H): The character analysis activity calls on students to draw heavily on their own experiences and their own ethical and practical judgment. Several of the activities require students to support their claims with details from the text and to use study strategies and summaries to aid comprehension of the text. (9)(A, B): Students will be encouraged to read this book, not just to complete the assignment, but also for entertainment and simple appreciation of the writer's craft. This book and the accompanying activities expose students to various forms of writing, including book, newspaper, website, and so on. (11)(A, B, D): After reading the book and performing various comprehension activities, the students are expected to respond meaningfully and critically to the text's content, form, and rhetorical structure. (12)(A - D, F, G): Students will recognize and discuss themes in the work and consider their multidisciplinary aspects. They will consider how the setting and time frame of the text influence its meaning. They will also consider the form of the text and understand the literary terms that describe its various features. (13)(B, C, E): Students will evaluate the authority and credibility of various sources. They will identify instances of persuasive reasoning and judge whether such instances are logical, deceptive and/or faulty. (14)(D - F): Students will evaluate internet resources for credibility and suitability for their research needs. They will organize and record their brainstorming and research in systematic ways to aid in producing the final product (report, essay, or verbal presentation). (15)(A - E): During lectures, class discussions, and group work, students will be expected to demonstrate good listening skills, including note-taking and reflective listening. They will ask questions for clarification and provide appropriate feedback to the teacher and their fellow students. (16)(B - D, F): Students will demonstrate various verbal skills during class discussions and group work. (18)(A, C): Students will analyze, evaluate, and critique the informative and persuasive messages in the book, in their internet sources, and in their fellow classmates' presentations. They will use peer and teacher assessments to improve their own verbal and written communication techniques. |
