Carowinds
Carowinds...Where Else?

History

The Carowinds theme park itself was originally envisioned as a component of a large resort-type area that would have included hotels, a shopping center, a golf course, and a pro-football stadium. Then again, like many other theme parks across the country, Carowinds' attendance was severely affected by the 1973 oil crisis, and the plans for the resort that would have surrounded the park were dumped.

The park was purchased by Paramount Communications in 1993 and joined the Paramount Parks family, after rights bounced from Taft Broadcast Company to Family Leisure Centers, to Kings Entertainment Company, which was the last owner prior to the purchase by Paramount. The park was renamed Paramount's Carowinds in 1993. Viacom then purchased Paramount in 1994.

Carowinds is a 105 acre theme park, located adjacent to I-77 on the state line between North and South Carolina, in Charlotte and Fort Mill. Carowinds is also a theme park that includes a variety total of 49 rides. The park opened on March 31, 1973 at a cost of $30 million, after a 4 year planning period spearheaded by Charlotte businessman Earl Patterson Hall.

BORG ASSIMILATOR:
The Carolinas' first flying coaster is also the tallest roller coaster in the park. It soars riders through eight inversions, most while flying facedown, zooming toward the ground and turning skyward just in time for the next inversion. The unique rider position offers breathtaking and virtually unobstructed views of the park.

CAROLINA CYCLONE:
When the Carolina Cyclone debuted at Carowinds in March 1980, it was the first rollercoaster in the world to turn riders upside down four times! Manufactured by Arrow Development (now Arrow Dynamics) in Mountain View, California, the 95-foot high, $2-million Cyclone used more than 2,100 feet of tubular steel for its construction. As the Cyclone was unveiled to the world through a million-dollar advertising campaign, riders flocked to be the first to experience its revolutionary design.

DROP ZONE STUNT TOWER:
Strap into an open car and lift 160 feet into the air at a speed of 16 feet per second. Feel the tension build as youre held for a few seconds, and then dropped all the way down on a 100-foot, 56 mph freefallall in complete safety. Just 60 feet above the ground, the rides magnetic braking system saves you from gravity.

SCREAM WEAVER:
A large wheel with interconnected gondolas spins horizontally before tilting into a vertical position, sending riders into an upside down orbit.

SOUTHERN STAR:
A giant looping Viking ship that swings backward and forward, then turns a series of two complete loops, suspending riders upside down 80 feet in the air. Riders experience sudden speed changes and controlled freefall as the ship swings through its 360-degree cycle.

TOP GUN: THE JET COASTER:
Introduced to the park in 1999 at a cost of more than $10 million, Top Gun: The Jet Coaster was the largest investment in park history at that time. Today, as the parks fastest rollercoaster, TOP GUN ranks as one of the top 30 steel coasters in the world! Weighing in at more than 2.2 million pounds, the 113-foot tall coaster was built by the renowned Swiss-based coaster manufacturer Bolliger and Mabillard (B&M). Best known for its blinding speedsup to 62 mphTOP GUN is also distinguished by its inverted construction. With trains suspended below the track, riders loop on the outside of the track instead of on the inside.

VORTEX :
This stand-up rollercoaster takes you on a 50-m.p.h. series of fun-filled loops and dramatic drops.
