"Sharon! Phone!"
"Thanks, Mom!" she yelled back from her room. She rolled over on her bed and quickly grabbed her phone. "Hello?"
"Sharon!"
"Hey Kelly! Long time, no talk. What's the news?" Sharon beamed when she heard her best friend on the other end.
"No way! I called to find out how your Homecoming night was last night."
Sharon laughed. "I thought you were going to wait until I sent you pictures!"
"Yeah right! I want to know right now, what you ended up wearing, were you able to do anything after the dance, if there was anymore eye candy for you or were your eyes glued on a certain quarterback all night. I want the news!"
Sharon laughed again but answered, "I wore my Homecoming dress from last year like I thought I would because I had no time or money to get anything else, no, we didn't do anything after the dance, Vin just drove me home afterward because you know how my parents can be about curfew sometimes, and no, my eyes were not glued on Damon all night, I was there with Vin!"
"Uh huh, but just because you were there with someone else, which I still don't know why you didn't ask Damon yourself in the first place what with this crush thing going on, doesn't mean you're always focused on what's right in front of you."
"Kelly, you're making me sound like such a slut here, thanks," she laughed. "You know I didn't ask him because Vin asked me first, and not to mention there was the fact that I thought he was going out with Ana, but still, you're right. My mind did wander off a couple of times, only I ended up thinking about you and everyone else back home and missing you guys terribly."
"Sweet, but you're such a liar!" Kelly laughed. "I bet you didn't think of us at all last night. That's why I'm calling you first thing on a Sunday morning because 'someone' didn't call me first."
"Oh please, it's barely eleven o'clock. I'm surprised you're even up at this hour!"
"Don't even try changing the subject, Sharon. You're not going to get away with it! I want to know what happened last night down to the last detail!"
Sharon laughed. "Nothing changes with you, Kelly. All right, all right. So Vin got here about 6:00 yesterday looking really good. He was wearing a nice suit that he'd gotten for one of his cousins' weddings earlier this year."
"Well if that was the case," Kelly interjected. "Then of course he'd look good. I don't know of a guy yet who doesn't look at least ten times better dressed up!"
"Very true. Anyway, so of course, he gives me my corsage, three red roses bunched together, all pretty of course and you know how I can't describe this kind of stuff so bear with me, and I gave him his boutonniere. Of course, there are pictures for the next ten, fifteen minutes or so and my parents are all fussy and stuff then we leave for dinner at this nice restaurant downtown. Talk was pleasant, we were just talking of our families and classes and the workload and such. Then we got to the dance a little after 7:30. One of his friends pulled him aside as soon as we put our stuff down. Damon found me and took me out to the floor to dance-." Sharon paused for a moment to let Kelly finish her shriek before continuing. "Before Vin came back. Vin and I danced to a couple songs, the DJ by the way was decent, and then we took pictures. Apparently, or at least last night, it looked like Ana had gone with Riley and Damon had gone with that witchy girl from my calculus class, her name's Kari. She totally snubbed me when Damon was introducing us but oh well. We all went back out onto the dance floor and danced or hung out at our table, the dance ended at 11:00 and we hung out for a couple, making the excuse that we were waiting for Ana and Damon to finish overseeing the beginnings of clean-up before we all split to go our separate ways. As I said, I have pictures from all throughout the night and I'll send those to you as soon as I can get them up but yeah. Vin dropped me off last night about 11:30, 11:45, we said our good nights, and I went to bed. That's it."
There was a slight pause on the other end and Sharon waited patiently for whatever was coming next. "You danced with Damon!!"
"Yes, and Vin and Riley and a couple of the other guys too, but mostly Vin."
"Sharon!!"
"Kelly!" she answered back, laughing.
"Must I force all these answers out from you? Well, is he a good dancer? What'd you guys talk about? Is there something going on between you two?"
"Yes, nothing really, we just danced, and I don't know," she answered quickly.
"Sharon, you're impossible!"
"And that's why I'm going to be single for the holidays, right?" she laughed.
"Oh please, let's not go there again. You don't know that. Besides, what's this talk about Ana and Damon not being together? Have you asked him yet?"
"Of course not! That's not my business!"
"Hello? You guys are at least friends. That's a fair question."
"Mm, maybe. If anything else, I'll ask Ana about it later," she replied.
Again, Kelly sighed. "You're never going to go out with Damon at that rate, Sharon!"
Sharon just laughed back. "We'll see, Kelly. If it's meant to be, it's meant to be. If not, then who am I to ruin a good friendship in the meantime?"
"And possibly miss out on something great in your life?"
"We'll see," she repeated once more.
Mr. Cardinet looked up from his newspaper as Damon walked into the kitchen, still half-asleep. "Did you have a good time last night, Damon?"
"Good morning, Dad. Yeah, I had a good time."
"And your date, what's her name. Did she have a good time?"
"Kari?" Damon shrugged as he looked into the fridge for the milk. "Yeah, I think so. She was smiling and looked happy the entire night, that's for sure."
"That's good. What about Sharon? Was she able to go?"
"Yup, she went with Vin."
"That's good she went. I was hoping she had settled in by now and given herself a chance to have some fun. Your mom thinks she stays in too much for someone so young. Did she have a good time?"
Damon smiled, recalling their dance at the beginning of the night. "Yeah, I'm sure she did."
"Good. Why didn't you ask her again? I thought you liked her."
Damon almost spit out the milk he was drinking. "What!? Who said that?"
Mr. Cardinet allowed a small smile to form on his face, which he hid behind the newspaper. "That's what your mother told me."
"I didn't ask her because Vin already had."
"Would you have asked if he hadn't done it first?"
"I don't know. Maybe?" he answered, trying his best to calm down and get rid of the blush he knew was on his face.
"So you do like her."
"I did not say that."
This time, Mr. Cardinet allowed a small chuckle to escape, causing Damon to blush even harder. "Well, if you think she's worth it, go after her. She seems to be a nice girl, not like what's her name, the girl you went with last night."
"Her name's Kari," Damon frowned a little. "What do you have against her?"
"Nothing," he answered. "She just seems, oh I don't know, a little cold at times. I know you two have grown up and known each other for years and years now, but she's not quite the same, smiling girl I remember from then. She seems almost manipulative, greedy and ambitious at times, if you can understand what I mean. Sharon on the other hand, she seems to be a genuinely nice girl. At least, she has been every time she's come over to baby-sit Caleb and Ros."
"Huh." Damon took this bit of information and left it at that.
"Well," Mr. Cardinet began as he folded up his newspaper and set it aside. "I'm off to the office again."
"But it's Sunday!"
"I need to take care of some things when there's peace and quiet there. Don't worry. It'll only take a couple of hours. I'll be home long before dinner."
"All right. I'll tell the others when they come down."
"Oh, they're all already out at the park. You do know it's close to noon now, right?"
The blush was back on Damon's face. "I guess I slept in a bit longer than usual this morning."
"Just don't make it a habit," his father replied, patting his son on the back. "See you in a few hours. Stay out of trouble."
"Yes, Dad," Damon replied as Mr. Cardinet walked out towards the front door.
As soon as the door shut behind him, Damon sighed and lowered his head a little to rub the back of his neck. 'How'd mom know? Even I'm not completely sure how I feel about Sharon. She's a nice girl, yeah, and we get along great. We can definitely talk about anything and do our fair share of teasing and making fun of each other. But was it just me last night or not when it felt like the two of us had been in our own little world when were dancing together last night? There's no denying the fact that I really enjoyed having her close enough to actually hold her in my arms a couple times. And it just goes to show that whatever physical chemistry between us earlier in the year when we just touched is really there because that electricity was still there last night.'
He sighed again. 'But she went to the dance with Vin. For all I know, Vin likes her and she feels absolutely nothing for me and likes Vin instead. If only I knew what she was thinking!'
Damon shook his head as if to remove any doubts in his mind. 'No use wondering, D. We'll just see what happens. If we're meant to be together, then it'll happen. If not…'
