Decisions, decisions at Ga. Tech( Baseball Weekly ) John Hunt; 03-30-1994
With Jason Varitek deciding to return for his senior season, two
of the three highest unsigned picks from last June's draft were
heading to Georgia Tech.
As if that isn't enough, both were catchers.
Tucker Barr, a catcher out of Maclay High School in Tallahassee,
Fla., had signed a letter-of-intent to go to Georgia Tech, figuring
on being the Yellow Jackets catcher for three seasons with Varitek
heading for the pros.
But when Varitek attended his Accounting II class on Sept. 22,
that meant Barr would spend a season sitting.
That is, unless he signed a pro contract.
Barr had until he attended his first class to sign. And keeping
tabs all the while on the Varitek situation, he skipped class the
first couple of days of school, deciding on his future.
In the end, Barr went to class - and Georgia Tech will have his
services for the next three seasons.
"Jason's a tremendous player," Barr said. "He's really taken me
under his wing."
