These are the Tiger Lillies that grow behind the Coneflowers. The soil is better there and the stiff Coneflowers help hold up the top-heavy Lillies. And on a late summer evening the fragrance is heavenly. It is not blooming yet in the large picture but I also have an enormous chicory plant growing here. If I'm ever out of coffee, I can use the root!
In my garden, as in nature, there are blood red flowers next to brilliant fuchia ones, behind bittersweet orange ones. Too bad I didn't wait to take this picture until the deep purple Clematis on the trellis were blooming. I love clematis. They add another tier of beauty and color to the landscape. I have at least eight varieties in various places, one growing up a tree and filling in where a limb has died. Since I try to keep dead wood around for the numerous Woodpeckers, this both visually balances the tree while providing habitat and food for the birds.
As if the trumpet vine that lines our little country lane weren't enough, I always have hanging baskets (at least one of which is an orange impatiens) to lure the hummingbirds. It must work. After a short time I can work just a half foot away and they ignore me completely.
