| Dr Konstantinos N. Baginetas Agronomist - Rural Geographer Specialised in Sustainable Agriculture and Rural Development B.Sc. (Ptychio, Aristotle University, Greece) D.I.C. (Imperial College, UK) M.Sc. (University of London, Imperial College, UK) Ph.D. (Nottingham University, UK) Email: [email protected] BIOGRAPHY I grew up in a small city called Lamia in central Greece. The area around Lamia is one of the most important ones in Greece in terms of agricultural production and subsequently most of my childhood memories are dominated by the view of crops in fields and especially by the view of blooming cherry and olive trees in the fields that my grandfather and father owned and cultivated. So, it was no surprise that on leaving the 5th High School of Lamia in 1994, i went on to study Agronomy at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, from which i graduated in 2000 (in Greece the degrees in Agronomy are 5 years courses!) with a specialisation in Arboriculture, Horticulture, Viticulture and Floriculture. While studying in Thessaloniki, i came upon the term of "Sustainable Agriculture" which since has, literally, shaped my future! My fascination for this term led me on to study for a M.Sc. in Sustainable Agriculture and Rural Development at Imperial College of Science, Technology and Medicine at Wye, University of London, UK from where i graduated in 2001 with a specialisation in Agroecology. During my course there i came across another fascinating term, that of "Sustainability Indicators". The idea of being able to make an intangible concept like sustainability something tangible through the use of indicators, led me to the School of Geography at the University of Nottingham, where i studied for a Ph.D. |

| RESEARCH DESCRIPTION The challenge facing agriculture and farming in the 21st century is to feed a growing population using sustainable farming methods. Sustainability indicators, introduced by Agenda 21 can help to monitor progress towards sustainability of the agricultural sector. The majority of the academic work on sustainability indicators has focused on measuring indicators on a national level and has adopted a top-down non-participatory approach. My research focuses on the field level and adopts a participatory bottom-up approach. The development of indicators of soil quality with the participation of farmers is the particular focus of this study. The research undertaken for this study consists of two parts. The first part involves laboratory analysis of soil samples taken from Thoresby Estate, Perlethorpe, in Nottinghamshire, UK. This first part is supplemented by a second part involving qualitative interviews with farmers in Nottinghamshire. Agri-Environmental Sustainability Indicators: Inter-disciplinary Development of Soil Quality Indicators in Nottinghamshire, UK Abstract There is a dominant view that the British farming and food industry is on a path that cannot be sustained in the long term (DEFRA, 2002). In this context, agriculture has to move in a more sustainable direction. In order for this to happen, it is critical that we have a means of evaluating and quantifying the sustainability of agricultural systems and monitoring changes over time (Girardin et al, 1999). An answer to this need lies in the use of 'sustainability indicators' (Bell and Morse, 1999). More specifically, the last years there is an increasing awareness that the quality and health of soils determine agricultural sustainability (Acton and Gregorich, 1995) environmental quality (Pierzynski et al., 1994), and, as a consequence of both - plant, animal and human health (Haberern, 1992). This has led to the need to develop indicators that can be used to evaluate the effects of farming systems managements on soil quality (Doran and Parkin, 1996). My research will be focusing in developing a set of soil quality indicators in Nottinghamshire, England through an interdisciplinary approach. More specifically, a comparison of a set of soil properties of arable fields and adjacent semi-natural woodland areas will be done (Odum, 1984; Conway, 1985; Altieri, 1995; Gliessman, 1998), and further to that, the farmers working in the above fields will be interviewed, in order to gain an understanding of the views that they have regarding sustainable agriculture, sustainability indicators, soil quality and soil health. Through this approach, it will be gained a better understanding of: (1) the way that soil quality indicators can be used to assess the sustainability of a field and (2) the attitudes of the farmers towards the practicality and use of such indicators.
