This is probably the easiest thing you can do with your computer. Now we have what is called a plug n play BIOS. The BIOS is the part of the computer that holds certain setting. They are held on a special chip. Also a ROM chip. It holds setting for your hardware and is consulted at boot up by your computer. The great thing about the BIOS is it can automatically detects new hardware and prompt for an installation disk.
When you install hardware you need to ground yourself you can do this by getting a ground wrist strap or by keeping in contact with a ground. Otherwise you risk destroying your computer. Remember to unplug your components first. Keep your work area clean and do not louse parts. Never open the power supply. It holds high voltage and can kill you.
If you have a lot to disassemble make a drawing and notes about what goes where and use bits of masking tape that you have pre numbered for connections. Use egg cartons for all the small parts and plan ahead. Do it on a day that the manufacturor will be available in case there is a problem. If you think the repair or upgrade will take two hours pan on a four to six hour job. Take your time and be careful. There are sharp edges inside computers.
Read everything you can about the upgrade or repair. Go to the manufactures web site. Check the documentation that comes with the card. Pull out the manual on your computer and look it over also. In this department you can never be too well informed.
