Lycoming County Man Dead In Head-On Crash

Police in Lycoming County are withholding the identity of a County man, pending notification of next of kin, who died in a vehicle crash just before 1 o'clock this morning on Route 15 in Old Lycoming Township.

They say the driver of the sports car was driving southbound in the northbound lanes just south of the Beauty Run Road interchange when it slammed head on into a tractor trailer and burst into flames.

Police say the impact sent both vehicles another 500 yards before the rig caught fire as well.

The driver of the rig was able to escape and was treated and released from Williamsport Hospital.

That roadway is expected to be closed all morning while crews clear the wreckage.

Police Officer Attacked By Man Being Placed Under Arrest

A Williamsport man is jailed after an alleged drunken brawl that ended with an attack on a city police officer.

They say 52-year old Robert Croffut Junior became combative with police after they showed up at his Hepburn Street home Friday night due to to a disturbance.

Oficers say the dispute was due to Croffut's wife not giving him a set of car keys because she believed he was intoxicated.

They say when a police officer arrived at the scene, Croffut punched and kicked him. Croffut is now jailed in lieu of $35-thousand bail.

Uni Mart Armed Robbery

A convenient store armed robbery early Saturday morning in Williamsport has a city man jailed.

Police say 41-year old Francis Fredin Senior of Dewey Avenue has been charged with robbing the clerk at the store around 4:30 Saturday morning.

A customer who was pumping gas at the time was able to give police a description of the getaway car as well as the registration. Police say they arrested Fredin about an hour later at his home. He is now jailed in lieu of $40-thousand dollars bail.

Lycoming County Teen Dies In Weekend Crash

A Linden teen is dead after a vehicle crash on Jobs Run Road in Mifflin Township, Lycoming County.

State police say 19-year old Jermey Dougherty was speeding and not wearing a seat belt when he lost control of his vehicle on a curve in the roadway, hit a tree and drove over an embankment around 5:30 Saturday morning.

Dougherty was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash.


Williamsport Fire Ruled Arson

A house fire in Williamsport has been ruled arson. Fire officials say it's the latest in a string of similar fires.

It happened at a vacant home at 210 Maynard Street in the city around 7:30 Saturday morning causing some $20-thousand dollars in damage. Police said someone lit the back porch on fire. Officials say the fire was within 100 feet of two other arsons in the city.

There have been ten arsons within a five block radius within the past two years. Anyone with information is asked to call the Arson Hotline at 327-7575.


College Student Escapes Injury In Shooting

A Penn College student escaped injury after being shot in the arm while driving through the 700 block of West Fourth Street in Williamsport just before 2 o'clock Sunday morning.

Police say Daniel Payne's vehicle was struck by a single bullet which went through the vehicle's door.

Within minutes police arrested 33-year old Dartanine Ranson of 10 E. Seventh Street in Williamsport, after a witness to the shooting said she saw Ranson shooting a handgun outside his vehicle, and was able to give police a description.

Hanson's vehicle was spotted in the 700-block of High Street. Police say Ranson, also known as "TANK," had cocaine in his vehicle. They note they found five spent shell casings on the exterior of his vehicle. Ranson is now jailed in lieu of $250-thousand bail.

Meanwhile, the driver of the car, 38-year old Antwain Chambers of Philadephia, was taken into custody and police later found cocaine in the back of the cruiser that he was placed in. He is now jailed in lieu of $30-thousand bail.
