What Is Irony?

What Is Irony?

The definition of irony is when a person expects a situation to go one way and it ends up going in a opposite direction. An example would be when I was job hunting. I was really working hard to get a job at Fossil and instead of being hired there I was hired at Lindt Chocolate, a place where I didn't put in any effort to get the job.

In the poem "Richard Cory" irony is shown as the people from his town expected Richard to be happy and grateful for his wealth when in reality he was miserable. No one expected him to put a bullet in his head. No one knew his deepest darkest secrets and his feelings. The plot of the story was to show how he was a good man with his intelligence and wealth, and how people looked at him but also how he viewed his life.

In the story "The Gift Of Magi" by O. Henry, irony is presented in an unexpected way. Della tried so hard to save up money just to buy a Christmas present that she thought was worthy enough for Jim to own. She tried anything and everything, and in one desperate move she cut off her long beautiful hair to sell it so she could have enough money to buy Jim his present. Little did she know Jim was looking for a present for Della. It was a set of combs for her beautiful hair. Jim sold his watch to get her combs, while Della sold her hair to get a chain for his watch. Now neither has a use for the presents. With all the effort both put into buying the other a present that suited them well, neither one was able to use the present due to the sacrifice they had to make.

Irony is presented in the article "The House That Slaves Built". The White House was made by African-American slaves and free-men. Throughout the history of the White House there has been a lot of criticism over having African-American guests. Fredrick Douglas was one African-American who was turned away from the White House until President Abraham Lincoln stepped in and made the guards allow him in. Another famous guest was Booker T. Washington. An article in a Tennessee newspaper called the meeting "the most damnable outrage which has ever been perpetrated by any citizen of the United States." Fast forward time 107 years, we now have a African-American president. African-Americans went from being slaves to president in the 209 history of the White House.

Irony is presented in many forms. Most people don't expect it to happen. Some people are unhappy but show everyone a good side, others sacrifice a loved pocession to make another happy, and the biggest sign of Irony is going from having African slaves in the White House to having a African-American president.
