Lots of master / slave relationships going on here (Not in the way that you think). The first thing I want to say, is that it's pretty hard to find pics of Ren with her clothes on.

Plotline - A malfunctioned alien space ship happens to crash into Japan somewhere, and on it is several hundred aliens or so. Unable to return home to their homeplanet, they decide to stay in Japan. It's not long before they obtain citizenship, learn the Japanese cultre and language, and live peacefully along with all the other peoples. Calling themselves "DearS", they possess special powers and secrets that normal humans would not. In order to learn more about the cultures and languages, they partipate in these "home stay" plans, where basically they stay with someone for a while. p So one day Ikuhara Takeya, a normal slack off high school student, happens to find a girl wrapped in a blanket. Seeing how no one can leave homeless girls wrapped in blankets on the street, he took her home. Ikuhara Takeya himself is a alien hater, and wasn't all too happy when he found out the girl was a DearS. Ren, the DearS that Takeya picked up, did not speak Japanese or understand much. And so, begins the mystery that revolves around what DearS really is.

The thing that got me to watch this series was the way other people were describing it.
"Wow, DearS is a Chobits clone! It's amazing how similar these two series are!"
Now, this is true to some point... but they are not similar at all. The only thing similar is Ren. The whole deal with the main character finding the female character on the streets / beach, the female character that doesn't understand anything, and the cliche plot about how the female character falls in love with the main character is about all that's similar. You would have figured out this pattern after watching Elfen Lied and Chobits, but the plot is different however.
The series itself? It's pretty decent. Of course, it doesn't compare to Chobits, but you don't watch a series to see if it's better than other things. DearS has it's own deal, and I believe that everybody who loved Chobits would like DearS as well. They crack a lot of jokes about the "Master and Slave" relationships, and surprisingly it fits into the plot. The thing that really hurt this series is the way it ended, if you ask me. It was building up excitement and plot to the climax of the last episode, and then it just... went downhill in the span of 5 seconds. Don't let this discourage you from watching it though, because Ren is reason alone to watch DearS. She reminds me of Osaka (Azumanga Daioh) and Chii (Chobits) mixed together, or something. Recommended to Chobits fans expecially.
My score: 8.3 / 10
