Iraqi
heartthrob and musical superstar Kazem
Al-Saher is headed to the States for a rare tour. The five-date outing,
beginning February 28 in New York, will find Al-Saher visiting theatres in
Detroit, Chicago, Berkeley and San Diego, accompanied by a troupe of 14
highly respected Middle Eastern musicians.
Michel Merhej Bahlouk and his daughters,
Christina and Claudette - who rarely perform in public - will also be on
stage, performing their classical Arabic tunes.
For those strictly tuned into the likes
of MTV, Al-Saher is probably a not-so-familiar name. However, to fans of
classical and modern Arabic pop, he's the reigning king and has been so
since the late ‘80s when his song "Obart Al Shat" (I Crossed The Ocean)
went big.
Schooled at Baghdad's Music Academy,
Al-Saher is perhaps the biggest singer in the Middle East. Estimates put
his album sales at more than 30 million since the beginning of his career.
His twelfth album, El Hob El Moustahil (The Impossible Love), sent
out in 2000, was his first to be officially released in the States, despite
an avid following.
Al-Saher is currently working on his most
ambitious work to date: an opera based on the legend of Gilgamesh.
Tickets for his tour are available
through Ticketmaster.
