MUSICIANS

27 MARCH 2003
At a time when international relations are fraught with tensions, peace-loving rocker Lenny Kravitz is doing his best to build bridges. The super cool singer has teamed up with Iraq's biggest pop star, Kadim Al Sahir, to record a new single calling for peace.

The pair recorded the track at Lenny's home in Miami just last week, before releasing it on the website of Rock The Vote. The tune, aptly entitled We Want Peace, also features Palestinian strings maestro Simon Shaheen and Lebanese drummer Jamey Hadded.

The 38-year-old New Yorker says he chose to team up with Rock The Vote, which campaigns to get people involved in politics, "because of its strong stance with young people as defenders of expression".

"This song for me is about more than Iraq. It is about our role as people in the world and that which we all should cherish - freedom and peace," he said.

Lenny is the latest in a series of musicians to record tracks objecting to the war. REM, John Mellencamp, The Beastie Boys and former Rage Against The Machine frontman Zack de la Rocha have also released protest songs in recent weeks.
