Appearance: Without a loose strand anywhere, all of his hair is neatly pulled back into a bun. His face appears to have a rounded square shape, and his small, slanted eyes have a fatherly look about them.

Personality: Although he appears stern at first glance, closer observations would reveal a kind and gentle person. He always seems to know when to praise, scold, and comfort. He takes most of his own worries on himself even though he has others surrounding him that he can and does trust with them. Kondou has the qualities of an innate leader.

Past (Manga): When Kondou was nineteen, he was one of the teachers at the Tennen Rishin Ryuu Kenjutsu Doujou (a school of a style of swordfighting). He taught Hijikata along with many other students. When Okita was moved into Kondou's house, Kondou took an instant liking to the boy. Helping Okita throughout the small problems children often come across, Kondou soon became the boy's teacher in Kenjutsu as well. When Kondou decided to make a group to help the current government, he took Hijikata, Okita, and several other students with him. Thus, the Miburou Shigumi (later the Shinsengumi) were born.
