Chapter 1 - The Meeting

Kazumi opened her eyes slowly. There was a cool breeze and the sky was a brilliant blue. She couldn't remember what had happened. Just that she was visiting ... something ... with someone.

She could feel the soft grass beneath her and watched as the clouds floated aimlessly in the sky. She sat up, deciding to look at her other surroundings and couldn't help but notice how pretty the plant-life was. Wild and exotic plants surrounded her, ones she had never seen before. Sighing, she tried to remember just what had happened.

There was a rustle in the bushes behind her. This caused her to jump up quickly. She looked to the source of the sound, but could see nothing.

"Who's there?" She asked a little nervously. There was no reply. She decided it was probably best to get away from this place.

Walking towards some more bushes, the rustle came again. It was much louder this time and came from in front of her. Her heart began to race. There was someone ... or something after her. She jumped over the bushes and broke into a run.

Looking back she saw a blur of orange and midnight blue dash behind trees. She had run into something - hard. A large tree stood before her. Feeling dizzy, she turned back, deciding to face whatever it was.

Something suddenly covered her mouth, something soft and furry but with a strong grip. Terrified, she passed out.

***

Ryo looked around. Water surrounded him everywhere. He was on a tiny island in the middle of a river and completely unsure how to get off of it. He wasn't sure why, but he absolutely hated water.

There was the sound of birds chirping and a crashing waterfall which were interrupted by a loud voice.

"Akiyama! Get off the bloody rock and cross that damn river!"

Ryo almost fell in. He knew that voice anywhere. Looking around he couldn't see anything but water and the damned bank on the other side.

"Is that...?" He asked but was cut off. He wasn't sure what happened next, but the world around him became soaking wet and he couldn't breathe. Someone had knocked him in the water.

Taking in a deep breath and swallowing a lot of water at the same time, Ryo quickly swam towards the surface, heading in where he hoped the river bank was. He broke the water's surface and began gasping for air, quickly jumping out of the water and began coughing violently.

"Damn it Monodramon!" He spat out between coughs. "You know I can't stand water!!"

A dinosaur-like creature stood before him, smirking. It was purple with yellow and red marks. It had fin like attachments to it's arms and a small horn on it's head. "Oh come on Ryo! You know I was just having fun!"

"I don't know if I would define that as fun." Ryo said coldly, taking in deep breaths of air. Monodramon jumped around Ryo, smiling a lot. Then he looked at Ryo more seriously.

"Where are your friends? They were meant to be here too!" Ryo stared at him blankly.

"My friends?"

"That girl and boy you were with! The boy's name is Ken, I remember him from the last time you were here. I don't know the girl."

Ryo's memory slowly returned and he felt an incredible sinking feeling in the pit of his stomach.

***

Flipping open the device, Ken found colourful lights and annoying noises emitting from it. Distantly, they could hear the very same noises and other children yelling mindlessly at each other. They just hoped that there was no one around to pay any attention to them.

"It shouldn't be doing this!" Ken managed to cry over all the noise.

"You designed it Ken! Make it stop!" Kaz called out to him, her hands covering her ears.

"Don't you get it? He doesn't know what it's doing. He has no idea how to stop it!" Ryo yelled, losing his temper.

"Shut up Ryo! Nobody asked you!!" Kaz snapped back.

Ken began pushing buttons on the device and words appeared on the screen. The noise died down suddenly and the lights stopped flickering for a moment...

"Assist them???" Ken read out and the lights and noise started up again, a flash of dark light came from nowhere.

***

Ken walked across the forest in disbelief. He knew this place but couldn't really tell where he was. He cleared his throat and decided it best to call out, hoping nothing would attack him.

"Hey!! Is anyone out there? I need help!" Moments passed and there was no reply. Sighing, Ken looked at his surroundings. Trees. Everywhere. Groaning, he found what he hoped was a path and began following it. Minutes passed slowly as he travelled deeper and there was no sign of any life at all. Ken thought it best to just turn around and walk back, or sit where he was and hope someone would find him.

When he finally decided on turning back, something made him jump. Something had broken the silence that surrounded him and it seemed to be getting louder.

Not thinking, Ken dived behind the nearest tree. The sound of voices was getting louder and Ken stared at the creatures walking through the forest. He wasn't sure what they were saying but Ken was sure that he didn't want to be seen by them.

Maybe if I follow them... he began to think, but stopped when he saw what they what they were dragging behind them. A small green caterpillar-like creature in a cage...

Ken's heart began to thump loudly in his chest. Wormmon! He ran quickly after them. He shook the cage lightly and the insect inside stared at him. It opened it's mouth as if to say something, but Ken brought his finger to his own lips. It nodded at him and Ken quickly dashed behind a tree as one of the creatures turned around. It was small and grey. It had large ears like a rabbit and looked almost like a dog - or a cat. Ken wasn't sure.

"There's nothing there, you stupid excuse of a Gazimon!" Another one said, looking just like the first. It swung it's tail around in a playful fashion. The other shot a glare at it.

"I'm telling you there was someone here!" The Gazimon began searching the area, checking behind trees and rummaging through bushes. Ken held his breath, wishing it'd just go away so he could follow them again. He could hear the Gazimon edging closer and closer. It's breathing getting louder by the second.

Ken considered his choices: running from the scene and probably be chased, or stay there and be caught. Before he could decide, he saw the Gazimon's paw touch the tree above him. His heart began to race when -

"There's nothing there! Come on, we're late as it is!" The Gazimon turned back, walking away. Ken had never felt his heart beat faster in his life. The Gazimon never even looked down to see if he were there! He heard some chains clink and the sound of metal being scraped across the ground. Ken watched after them and followed behind the trees, trying his hardest not to let them out of his sight.

***

Sitting upright, Taichi observed his surroundings. He was sitting in the sand on a beach.

"Taichi! Taichi!" A voice called out suddenly. He turned and saw someone waving at him. Someone he hadn't expected at all.

"Agumon?! Agumon!" He jumped up and ran over to his friend. The dinosaur-like digimon embraced him in a tight hug the moment they met up.

"Taichi! I'm so glad you're here again! We've got some important work to do!" Before Taichi could answer, Agumon had already begun dragging him across the sand.

"What? I just got here. There's so much I want to tell you..."

"There's no time! We need to find the others and get to Gennai as soon as possible!" Agumon said in a worried voice.

"What's wrong?"

"I don't know." Agumon said, shrugging and continuing to drag him. "Gennai said you were summoned back here and now he needs to talk to you about it."

Taichi looked around. "Do you know where the others are?"

Agumon shook his head. "That's why we have to find them!" Suddenly, thunder roared and Agumon jumped. Dark clouds quickly began gathering in the sky and it started to sprinkle lightly.

"I think we may have to wait until this storm passes! Come on Taichi!"

***

Slowly, she opened her eyes. Everything around her was a complete blur. Her memory quickly returned and she sat upright, her vision also returning to normal. Kaz found herself in a dark cave, lit only by a fire in the middle. She remembered passing out and realised whoever - or whatever had grabbed her had brought her here. There was a large crack of lightning and it began to rain heavily outside.

She shivered and she began to wonder where she was. She could feel someone watching her and she turned, looking for whoever it was.

"Who's there?" She demanded, gathering her courage. There was no reply, but the shuffle of feet dashing quickly made her turn again.

"Don't make me repeat myself..." She muttered quietly.

"All right." A voice said suddenly. She hadn't expected this, she was hoping it was just an animal. She turned once more to the source of the voice and saw something looking at her in the shadows.

"I've been waiting for you, Kazumi." The voice continued. A small figure walked out of the shadows and Kaz nearly screamed. A small blue-grey wolf stood before her. It had bright orange hair that didn't match it's fur and dark blue marks covered it's body. It had two tails, a spiked collar around it's neck and a yellow lightning shaped mark on each of it's ears. It was small, and she had never seen anything like it in her life.

"What ... what are you??" She stammered, continuing to stare at it. She realised it looked a little like a cute animal, but kept on thinking how she had never seen anything like it before at the same time.

"I'm a digimon. Yours, as a matter of fact." It replied. It sounded distinctly male.

"Digi ... digi-what?"

"Digimon. It's not that hard Kazumi."

Kaz suddenly felt stupid. "All right, digimon. You look ... kinda like a wolf though."

"I'm Wolfomon. Monster of wolves." It replied, a hint of annoyance in it's voice. "Digimon are digital monsters. You're not in the human world anymore."

"Human world? You mean Earth?"

"You're still on Earth. You're just on the digital version of it. The Digital World."

"Digital World...? Is this some theme park?" She could tell by the small vein popping out of it's forehead it was getting annoyed. "Uh ... never mind." She said quickly.

"I could hurt you." It said, sneering a little. "But that would defeat my purpose. I'm meant to protect you. And while you're under my protection, I want things run my way, no more annoying questions, got it?"

It was now Kaz's turn to feel annoyed. "Thanks, but I don't need your help." She hissed, turning to leave the cave. "I can take care of myself just fine."

"You're not going anywhere. Especially in this storm." It snapped, jumping in front of her and blocking the exit.

"I can go wherever I want! I'm so sick of people telling me what to do!" She jumped over the wolf and ran deep into the forest. Rain hit her hard and she was soaked within minutes. Mud slopped all over her clothes as she ran through puddles.

It suddenly got darker and the rain was pouring down harder than ever. She was completely surrounded by trees, but the rain was still hitting her. She suddenly slipped into the puddle beneath her and lightning struck a nearby tree. Suddenly, two creatures were giggling maniacally and approaching her. She had the worst feeling of dread fall upon her. What had she just gotten herself into?

***

Wolfomon cursed. He let her slip away so easily. "Kazumi!" He called out, constantly shaking his body like a wet dog. He followed her outside, but lost her when she ran behind trees. The rain had soaked him.

"Wolfomon!" He heard a voice call out in the distance. It wasn't Kazumi's but he knew he had to find it.

"Monodramon?!" He called back. "Monodramon! Is that you?!"

"Yes!" It called back. It was definitely closer this time. "Where are you?"

"I'm surrounded by trees, you half-wit! How am I supposed to know?!" He snapped back.

"I dunno." A voice said in his ear. He jumped around, glaring at Monodramon standing right behind him.

"You trying to scare me to death??" He asked, clearly annoyed. His eyes suddenly fell on the human behind him.

"Monodramon, you little ... you brought your human out here?! In this storm??!"

"What was I supposed to do? Leave him in a cave?" Instead of answering, Wolfomon turned to Monodramon's human instead.

"Since you're here, I'm Wolfomon. Your girlfriend's quite a fast runner." He started to blush insanely.

"I'm Ryo and she's not my girlfriend."

"She's a girl and she's a friend, right?"

Ryo didn't reply, but after a moment said "You sound just like Kaz, you know that?"

"Where is your human, anyway?" Monodramon interrupted.

"Er..." was all Wolfomon said.

"You mean you let her get away? That's why you think she's fast at running! You thought I did something bad by bringing my human out in the storm but you lost yours?" Monodramon started shouting at Wolfomon, saying things that didn't even relate to the subject. Wolfomon, however, had his mind on other things.

"Do you know which way she went?" Ryo asked. Wolfomon realised he also hadn't been listening to Monodramon.

"No." He said, shaking his head. "Not exactly the way I planned to meet her either."

"So ... so we've got to find her then." Ryo said. Wolfomon merely nodded and started walking towards the trees.

"We should stick together. It doesn't look like it from here, but it's a large forest. We don't want anyone else to go missing." Agreeing, Monodramon led the way. Monodramon isn't the type to be leading, Wolfomon thought, but he decided to just leave it.

Ahead, they could hear the cries of a small boy, desperately trying to get away from something. Ryo's eyes widened.

"That's ... he's ... no way... Kaz ... she better be there helping him!" He said, not making a lot of sense. Monodramon managed to work out half of what he said, but then watched Ryo run towards the cries.

"No! Ryo you - " Wolfomon ran off after him. "Wolfomon - argh! Wait up you two!"

***

Ken struggled against their grip. The Gazimon duo had caught him following them. One was carrying him while he kicked and tried to wriggle out of it's grip.

"Stay still, damn it! This'd be a lot easier on you if you'd just stay still!"

Ken continued to kick furiously. "Just leave Wormmon alone! I don't care what happens to me!"

The other Gazimon ignored him as he pulled the cage across the ground. Wormmon, as Ken had called it, was looking out the cage, trying as hard as he could to break free.

They finally reached a small village, where a bunch of Pagumon and Gazimon were waiting at the village square. They were huddled around something attached to a statue. There was a fire lit and it didn't seem to be affected by the rain at all.

"Don't try to struggle you little brat!
Your friends will come quick as a cat!
But save you is what they cannot do!
Do what we say without questioning too!
Or you'll be burned here, at the stake!
Obey us for your own life's sake!"

The Pagumon sang on and on, Ken thought they were singing to him or Wormmon, but he saw someone dirty and soaked chained to the statue. The Gazimon threw him down and began to chain him to.

"Kaz!"

She looked up, her eyes filled with rage and anger. "Ken! How did they ... how did you ... you've got to get out of here!"

"That's a bit hard to do!" He spat back. Kaz kicked at the Gazimon chaining Ken and the other one looked after him in shock.

"Go now!" She said as the second helped the first up. Ken stared at her but shook his head.

"I said GO!" She snapped, causing Ken to jump. The chains fell and he jumped off the statue. A herd of Pagumon suddenly ran over to him and without thinking he jumped over them and ran from the village quickly. Before he could get very far, he ran into someone, falling from the impact.

Ken opened his eyes, gasping at the person before him.

"Ryo! I thought you were a Gazimon!"

"Gazimon? Oh who cares! Are you okay??" Ryo said, helping Ken stand up. His voice was shaky and he could tell he was nervous about something.

"Kaz ... they have her tied to this statue! She managed to help me escape but she's still there!" Ryo didn't hesitate, he quickly ran towards the village.

Before Ken could bolt after him, someone ran up behind him. He jolted around, staring down at a digimon.

"Who are you?" They said in unison.

"Ken."

"Wolfomon."

"What are you doing?" They said again, finally giving up on talking at the same time. Everything seemed to be timed. Monodramon finally caught up to Wolfomon and was panting loudly.

"Where's ... Ryo?" He gasped.

"He went to the village." Ken replied. Wolfomon ran to the village and Monodramon rolled his eyes.

"As glad as I am to see you Ken, we should be helping them." Monodramon said, still out of breath.

They quickly caught up with Wolfo and found Ryo standing behind a house. They could hear chanting and the sound of someone yelling.

"Leave her alone! She has nothing to do with this!"

"Wormmon..." Ryo muttered, listening carefully. He could hear Kaz struggling and Gazimon groaning and yelping in pain.

"Keep away from me!" She had snapped as a Gazimon cried out. Ryo didn't want to think of what she was doing to them.

"We've got to do something." He said finally, looking at the group that had settled before him. Before getting a chance to speak, Wolfomon ran out from the house, glaring at the Gazimon.

"You messed with the wrong human!" His body flared up, he had fire surrounding him. His eyes ad gone completely white and he jumped into the air, flipping as he did so.

"Double..." The fire around his body circled his two tails. "Tail..." It got brighter and bigger as he gathered more energy. "ATTACK!!" He finished flipping, facing the digimon before him. His tails were raised upwards, the fire quickly leaving them and burning the digimon below.

He landed swiftly on his feet, several Gazimon and Pagumon had run off towards the nearest lake. They seemed to have forgotten it was raining. Wolfomon was breathing deeply, looking triumphantly at the pack of digimon he had knocked out. He looked up suddenly, eye to eye with a Gazimon. He turned his head, seeing a pack of Gazimon and Pagumon approaching him. Their red eyes were flaring with anger.

"Damn..." All around him, electricity surged and from every direction an attack came.

"Electric Stun Blast!"

"Bubble Blow!"

Wolfomon fell to the ground, pain quickly making a course through his body and could hear the digimon around him suddenly retreat. He was too weak to move. Too weak to lift his head and see what was going on around him. He could only hear them. Hear the voices. Hear screaming...

"Beat Knuckle!"

Monodramon released his own attacks. The Gazimon and Pagumon were falling in their ranks slowly. Wolfomon could hear them trying to fight back, but their attacks were coming less and less. Finally, he managed to raise his head, he could see Monodramon attacking the digimon. He looked towards the statue, Ryo and Ken were trying to get the chains off Kazumi. His attention reverted quickly back to Monodramon at the sound of lightning. He cried out to Wormmon, seeing a Gazimon behind him. The only sound that left his body, however, was a small groan that could barely be heard.

Monodramon got blasted by an attack and fell to the ground, unconscious. The Gazimon who had attacked him had fallen to the ground too, it had used all of it's energy to attack him.

The sound of metal busting apart suddenly rang through the area. Everyone stopped, looking towards the source. Wormmon had stayed forgotten in his cage, gathering energy. Enough to break down the cage and enough to stay standing. He was in front of the humans, in a protective stance. He was breathing deeply and looked very weak, but his eyes told them he wasn't going to give up easily.

"Step away from the humans and you will be spared." A Pabumon said. Of course, Wormmon didn't feel threatened by it and didn't move.

"We're giving you one last warning." A Gazimon said, but Wormmon didn't back down. The digimon the began approaching him, getting ready to attack. Wolfomon struggled to stand, Wormmon ... don't do this... He tried to say, but the words simply circled in his head.

You're too weak ... leave them ... the humans can protect themselves... He fell to the ground again, the words still repeating themselves over and over again. A searing pain suddenly struck his side as he said this, then a ball of fire flew over him. It hit all the Gazimon and Pagumon. Smoke surrounded the area, the Gazimon and Pagumon were wailing in pain. The fire seemed to be growing, but it suddenly disappeared. The smoke remained and Wolfomon arched his neck as high as he could to try and see what had happened. He gasped when he saw what was there.
