Larva sexing Yellowish ovaries may be visible underneath the 7-8th abdominal segment of the dorsal side of a female larva after its mid L2 stage. There are no ovaries in male larva, as a matter of course. Besides, an L3 male reaches to 40-60 grams in weight when it is fully grown, whereas the female remains below about 20 grams. However, this sexing method may not be applied to that of some genera such as Odontolabis. The larvae of those genera may be sexed by differences in weight and head size. Those of the male are usually larger. Image: Kay |
