I was attracted to this book not by the exterior but by the large black and white plates of scenic Devon around the 1950s. It is written by a traveller of the time exploring the county. The people and places listed above are included. The book sums up a Devonian aptly: - Quote: “ They are what they are, and, unlike so much of the rest of the world, they do not feel it necessary to pretend to be anything else” This still holds true today some 55 years after the book was published. Whilst somewhat out of date today if you are planning to explore the county however if you wish to know what a traveller’s perspective in Devon was like in the 1950s then the book reflects the period well and gives insight into the lives of the locals of the time.

Val Doone’s photography of Devon captures in photographs landscapes of an undeveloped Devon and these plates although aged are worthy of note.
