| A NEW PATH By Kayryn Shadow Disclaimer Paramounts, not mine. Never was, never will be. *sob, sob* Authors note Mikes kids were not named after Kate Mulgrews kids. I fell in love with the names when I first ever heard them in ST: TNG episode Child. In that episode Deanna Troi named her son Ian Alexander and already back then I decided that if I ever have a son hes going to be named as least one of those, if not both. Its just a coincidence that Mulgrews kids are named so too. And I swear this on my mothers life. Author's note 2 - also I'd like to say that this is my last NC17 story. And no, you can't change my mind (though I wonder why you'd even want to). I actually decided some time ago that I'll never write another NC story. But this was still a work in progress at the time. So I just tied the ending together and here it is. Sheri, thank you! Without you I would have given up on writing - any writing - a long time ago! RATED NC17 The ship was almost too quiet, Janeway thought as she roamed the corridors of her ship. Eerie, with all most of the crew asleep or on graveyard shifts. It was the day everyone had been waiting for for a month. Though Kathryn Janeway was happy for their connection to the Alpha Quadrant, the day always carried a wave of anxiety with it. The news from home were often good, but on those occasions that they weren't, it seemed to hit harder than expected. For her own part Kathryn was constantly worried about her mother, as Phoebe had told her a two communications ago that their mothers health was failing. Today she'd received another letter from Phoebe, saying that Gretchen was still no better. In fact she was a little worse than before. The family doctor had said it was due to stress. Stress of being worried about her older daughter, so far away. Now, Kathryn was strolling around Voyager, like she always did when sleep eluded her. She'd already been to Engineering, Astrometrics and Cargo Bay two, where she'd spent a few minutes watching Seven regenerate. All along she watched the night crew being busy keeping her ship in running order. She had a moment of regret when all they did was nod at her, and then continued with their assigned jobs. Sometimes, when it was late and she couldn't sleep, she wished she had been closer to her crew. It would have been nice to be able to sit down and talk with them a bit, see how they are doing rather than hearing it from Chakotay second hand. Now she was nearing the Mess Hall and like she suspected, found it dark and empty. Suits my mood perfectly, she thought and entered the spacious room. The light from the stars outside was enough to keep her from stumbling on the chairs as she made her way to the viewport. Kathryn was almost at her regular 'thinking spot' when she saw movement out of the corner of her eye. She turned to see who it was. "No need to call security, I'm already here," the person said and raised his arms in the air. It was Mike Ayala, Janeway realized. Now why would he be here at this hour? "I'm sorry, Lieutenant, I didn't mean to intrude," Janeway began, "I guess I didn't really expect anyone else to be here at this time." "Captain's privilege?" Kathryn smiled at his words. "Something like that, yes." She wasn't sure what she expected him to say or do, but whatever it was he wasn't doing it. He seemed even more quiet than usual, and he wouldn't meet her eyes. Kathryn had a growing feeling things weren't all alright. "Is everything in order?" Still looking at the stars he said, "Now that you ask? I'm not sure." "Do you want to talk about it?" When silence was his answer for several moments, Kathryn thought it might be best to excuse herself and leave the man to his own thought. He didn't seem willing to talk about whatever it was that was troubling him, but she couldn't really blame him. After all, it wasn't like they were that close. Shared a few meals every now and then with Chakotay, Tom and B'Elanna. An away mission here and there. She was just about to turn when she heard his speak. "I I got a letter from Elaina, my wife, today." Kathryn could sense what he was going to say, but waited for him to find the right words. She knew only too well what he'd gone through. "The boys are doing great. Both are doing well in school. But Elaina, well I guess she's doing great too. She'd moved on. I guess you'd expect that. I mean, considering everything. And I can't say I was surprised. Elaina was never the kind to stand still for long and frankly I couldn't imagine her, putting her life on hold and waiting for me to get back. Especially since there are no guarantees about us getting back any time next month. "So I wrote her a response right away. I told her that I understood her reasons and her decision to get a divorce. And I do understand it! And I suppose I'm even happy for her that she's moving on" "But" Kathryn prodded after a moment of silence. "I guess the reality of it is starting to sink in. I didn't realize everything that it means. We'll never be a family again. But the thing that threw me off was that I don't really mind. I know her and I know that whoever is going to be there by her side, is going to treat the boys well. She wouldn't allow any other way. And that's all I care about." "You love them very much." It wasn't a question, only a statement to which Ayala nodded. Kathryn was grateful for the dimness of the room as she suddenly blushed crimson. "I'm sorry, I've never even asked the names of your sons." "Ian and Alexander," he replied, noticing her the grin that was spreading on her face. The grin soon turned into chuckles and then laughter. "What?" "You'd never believe be," she said, refusing to answer his question. "You'll never know if you don't try." "Alright. Those have always been my top two names of choice if I ever had a baby boy," she revealed. "You're kidding me, right?" "No! Absolutely not! I think I was sixteen or seventeen when I decided that. I've always loved those names," she said. "Shows you have a good taste, then," he laughed. "Guess so," she allowed, but then her face grew grim. Ayala caught the expression, "He was right." "Excuse me?" "Chakotay. He once said, years ago, that he could always tell when you were feeling guilty about something. Look, I don't know whether you're feeling guilty about the whole situation or just my case here, but which ever it is, stop." "Lieutenant -," Janeway warned him. "This is not official business, were not on the bridge or on duty. Theres no use pulling rank Captain. The contradiction of the sentence was too much for Kathryn, who despite her best efforts not to, started laughing. I guess youd better call me Kathryn then, she suggested. Ayala smiled then became serious again. Look, I really mean it. This may sound like a cliche, but no one on this crew blames you for anything. We all know that some of the things youve done for us go beyond the call of duty and we know youll do some of those things again without thinking twice. We couldnt have asked for a better Captain. Kathryn stared at him, silent. Shed heard those words before, many times, from Chakotay, but shed always had a hard time believing them. She figured that hed said it just because he was her friend and he wanted to make her feel better. Or because he himself didnt want to believe the truth about the crew blaming her. But here was Mike Ayala, assuring her of the same thing and the way hed said it and the look on his face told her that he was being honest about it, too. Neither had said anything for a full two minutes before Janeway finally found herself telling him something she hadnt told anyone but Chakotay and Tuvok. You know I got a Dear John letter myself. Back when we first made contact with Alpha Quadrant. The look of disbelief was unmistakable on his face. Youre surprised, she observed. Why? He hesitated, It really isnt my place as a Lieutenant to say the kinds of things that are on my mind at the moment to my Captain. Kathryn smiled crookedly, Didnt we just drop rank a few minutes back? Although feeling quite confident that whatever it was that he was going to say would not shock her, she started doubting it when she saw the determination in Mikes eyes. I just have a hard time understanding how anyone would be so stupid as to let Kathryn Janeway slip through their fingers. Thank you, Mike, really. Its very sweet of you to say so, but Im afraid the truth is quite contrary to that. Im really not that great of a catch, she avoided. Why in a world would you say that? Why? Kathryn thought for a moment, not sure if this was a topic she really wanted to discuss with one of her security officers, but then remembered her wish to be closer to the crew. If she was ever going to accomplish that shed have to let them see Kathryn too, not just the Captain. Who better to start with than a friend of her best friend? The crew may look up to me, but its the Captain they see, not Kathryn Kathryn is, even at forty-five, an awkward, clumsy girl who never had the guys chasing her. Her hair is impossible; shes too short and shes not really that talented in anything but immersing herself in science. Shes never had many boyfriends, a total of three that she could call a relationship. I guess shes just always too busy. Mike looked at her, and she could tell he was clearly astonished. What had she been thinking? She didnt know this man, why would she go telling details like that about her life to him? Im sorry I shouldnt have said that. Ayala, guessing correctly that she had read too much into his surprise, shook his head. No, Im sorry. Its not that you said it. Its what you said. Three? I would have assumed your mother would have been beating the poor guys down with a broomstick. How could you have only three? Kathryn chuckled, That wasnt quite what went on. It was my sister who collected all the lovesick boys, not me. And mom used my tennis racket instead of a broom. Well what about Chakotay? You have him... he suggested. No, I dont. Hes a devoted friend, but contrary to what people seem to think, he has never really tried to be anything but. No, I dont mind, he is the best friend I could have. But theres never been more to it than that, Kathryn explained. I find that hard to believe, he confessed. Leaning closer to her he whispered conspiratorially, with the blue of your eyes, that gorgeous hair and lips like that Suddenly he fell silent, realizing he had just said and done, "Im sorry, it is late and I get a bit funny when Im tired. Excuse me." And before Kathryn could say another word, he was past the Mess Hall doors, leaving her alone to stare after him. -*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-* It was a few days later when Kathryn came to her Ready Room in the morning only to find a rose on the table with a PADD next to it. She picked up the flower carefully, examining it as only a scientist would. It was replicated, there was no doubt of that. But the color of it struck her; it was blue the exact same as her eyes. She read the note, I was going to send a note to apologize for what I said, but then I remembered the words never apologize for the truth. I can honestly tell you that, even though Chakotay may never have been tempted to act out on those impulses, I'm not Chakotay, remember that. Mike. Color raising on her cheeks, Kathryn set down the PADD and slowly sat on her chair behind the desk. She was having a hard time categorizing her thoughts and feelings, but probably most foremost of everything was the shock she was in. The words were so outright and never had she imagined Mike Ayala to be so bold. Shed always thought of him as the tall, dark, handsome and silent type. She tried to be infuriated with him, but couldnt summon the feeling. Frustrated, Kathryn decided no matter what, she couldnt let him get away with flirting like that, it was completely inappropriate for a Lieutenant to speak to his Captain in that manner. And she couldnt let Ayala think she found his behavior appropriate, no matter how attractive it made her feel. After asking for the Lieutenants location from the computer, Kathryn made her way through the bridge straight into the turbolift. He maybe off duty, but this couldnt wait another minute. Once on deck three she walked the short distance to his quarters and rang the door chime, still trying to find the words to say to him. As the seconds passed Janeway began to feel uncertain about standing in the corridor outside Ayalas quarters but then shook the thoughts from her head. Finally the doors parted and she stepped in. As soon as the doors closed she could hear his voice right behind her, how can I be of assistance, Captain? Despite the close proximity to him, Kathryns Captain mode took control, overriding her reaction to his nearness and she found the words easy enough to find. Mr. Ayala, I appreciate the rose, the gesture was sweet but you have to understand, I am the Captain. And as a Captain I can't accept gifts such as these and I certainly cannot condone...." The rest of her sentence was lost as he came around to stand in front of her and leaning in closer captured her lips with his. Although tender, he didnt show hesitancy in his kiss. Caught unawares Kathryn kissed him back, a small whimper escaping her. His lips were caressing hers ardently and with skill but before he could deepen the kiss further she broke it, gasping for air. I Unsure as what to say, Kathryn simply turned around and left his quarters. A few minutes later she found herself from her own cabin, her feet having brought her there automatically. Going to the replicator, she ordered herself a cup of coffee before sitting behind her desk. With one hand on her forehead, Kathryn wondered, what just happened? It was a half an hour later that she returned to the bridge, resolved on talking to Ayala before the say was over. What he had done was out of line but she would be willing to forget all about it if he gave his word hed never try anything like it again. Exiting the turbolift Kathryn mentally shook a disturbing thought from her head. But would she really be able to forget? Of course she would, she was the Captain for heavens sake! Report! Were on course for Earth at warp seven point eight. All systems are functioning at peak efficiency, Chakotay reported. No interesting anomalies to investigate, no distress calls to respond to? Kathryn was getting desperate for a diversion. Sorry, Captain. Seems like were doomed for smooth sailing for now, the First Officer joked, completely unaware of his Captains anxieties. Janeway collapsed on her command chair and stared ahead, with thoughts of Mike Ayalas lips on hers hunting her. Unconsciously she brought her hand to her lips, touching them lightly. Chakotays quietly spoken question jolted her out of her reverie. Anything wrong, Kathryn? No, of course not, she offered hurriedly and then kicked herself mentally, no need to sound so panicked, Kath, then hell know for sure somethings not right. Both fell silent, but Chakotay seemed to keep an eye on her now. She wished he wouldnt. It was just too damn uncomfortable to be sitting next to him, thinking about Mike Ayala and his lips. She had to admit he was a great kisser. She wondered if he was better than Chakotay was. Of course she had no way of really knowing since Chakotay had never kissed her. That or any other- way. Captain, Harry Kim said, drawing her attention back to the present. Three unidentified ships are approaching. Dropping out of warp off the starboard. Their weapons are online, Tuvok reported. Raising shields. Hed barely uttered the words when two of the three ships fired on them causing the Federation ship to shake and its Captain to nearly get thrown off her chair. Red Alert! Mr. Paris, evasive maneuvers. Mr. Kim, hail them! No response Captain. Open a channel, Janeway ordered. Channel open. This is Captain Kathryn Janeway of the Starship Voyager, please call off your attack so we can talk. The only response she got was Voyager rocking under another set of enemy fire. Alright, she muttered. Tuvok, fire at will. Firing. Direct hit, but no real damage. Keep at it, Tuvok. Another ship approaching Captain, its seems to be the same type but at least twice as big. Any luck trying to raise them? Chakotay asked. No Commander, theyre not responding either. Who are they? What could they want? Why wont they talk? Janeway could hear Tuvoks voice over the commotion of the bridge, Captain, they are concentrating their fire on one area only and the shields are failing rapidly. Now down to forty-three percent. Raising from her chair, the Captain moved over to the tactical station and looked at the readings. Try disabling their weapons, Tuvok. Ill work on the shields. The Vulcan simply nodded in understanding and stepped slightly to his right to give the Captain more room to work. With her fingers dancing on the console she tried to look for ways to get more power to the shields. Once again the ship shook heavily, and Janeway saw a light starting to flicker on the console in front of her. Communications down, she announced to the others and then without even looking his way asked, Tuvok? For a few seconds she got no reply, but then Voyager stopped shaking and she could see Tuvok straightening his back next to her. Their weapons are offline. Before she could issue a command to hail them again Kim stated, theyre retreating, Captain. Looking around the Bridge she assessed the damage before sighing. Let them go, Im not in mood for a pursuit and another round of this. Helm, resume our course. Aye, Captain. How long until we get communications back? The voice belonged to the First Officer still sitting in the command chairs. Harry looked up from his station, frowning, At least another three hours. What about turbolifts? Are they working? Yes, Captain. As are environmental controls, holodecks and everything else. Thank god for small and not so small favors, Janeway heard Tom say. She couldnt have agreed more. Bowing her head for a moment Kathryn thanked whatever gods were listening and then concentrated back on getting the shield to full. After a minute or so she checked with Harry if any of the alien ships were still on sensors. No. Theyve disappeared. Chakotay looked at her concerned, worried theyll be coming back? Im not sure. But it doesnt make any sense what they did. Attack, no communication at all, and then leave with your tail between your legs, she said. I wouldnt be surprised if they came back with reinforcements. Ill keep a close eye on the sensors, Kim reported and for second Janeway could see the eager Ensign who first came on board six years before. After punching the last few keys on the console and once more checking the readings Janeway announced that the shields were again at full capacity. Raising her head from her task, Kathryn saw Chakotay looking at her with a smile on his face. Once again, theyd cheated the evil powers of the Delta Quadrant. She found herself smiling back at him, theyd be okay again. Alright, Ill be in Engineering should anyone need me, she informed him. Captain? Im sure BElanna has everything under control, but Im not too keen on waiting for reports being delivered about it. Besides, she might need an extra pair of hands, Janeway said, already summoning the turbolift. Commander I want you to stay here in case those aliens decide to come back. If they do, let them know who theyre dealing with. Acknowledging her orders with a nod and a grin Chakotay refocused his attention to the console next to him, studying the newly found enemys tactics. Kathryn heard the turbolift doors open and started to step in before noticing someone coming out. Barely avoiding a collision with the person, she offered a hasty apology before looking up and noticing exactly who it really was. Brushing against the Captain, Lieutenant Ayala handed a PADD to the Security Chief. Kathryn tried not to feel the heat radiating from the younger mans body, but it was nearly impossible as the man stood only two inches from her and the moments spent in the turbolift came back unbidden to her mind. Feeling an almost desperate need to escape the thoughts his presence was creating Kathryn entered the lift issuing a command to the computer to take her to deck eleven. Hold the lift, she heard him say. Automatically she told the computer to belay the previous order and waited for Ayala to re-enter the lift. The second the words left her, she cursed herself silently. It wasnt like she needed to be in confined spaces with the man. Yes, of course she had to talk to him about his behavior but only when she was prepared and ready. Trapped in a turbolift for ten decks was not cutting it. Finally the Lieutenant stepped back inside, taking his place at the back of the lift, deck eleven, Captain? Yes. Thank you. Kathryn took a small step forward, thus widening the space between them. Decks nine and eleven, he ordered and the lift started moving. The silence was deafening but Kathryn was more than glad for it. Silently she thanked the powers that be for making him stand behind her so she didnt have to face him. Despite the distance between them she could almost feel his breath on her neck and it made the hair on her arms stand up. The descent to deck nine seemed to take a forever and Janeway was already contemplating on getting off somewhere in between just to get away from Ayala when the lift at last came to a halt. Stepping aside to give him more room to walk past her, Janeway realized just how close to her he was. It was no wonder she thought she could feel him behind her, hed been standing only an inch away. Kathryn was already thinking about a way reprimand him when she the doors opened, revealing crewmen Gerron and Henley standing outside. She swallowed the words, forcing a smile on her face and nodded her greetings to the two crewmembers. The smile faltered somewhat when Mike Ayala stepped from behind her, brushing the Captains butt on his way out. Biting on her tongue, she forced the captains mask back on her face as the three of them continued their way to Engineering. ********* Walking through the corridors Kathryn kept running the events of the last few days in her head. She knew she had to talk to Ayala about his conduct, it was highly inappropriate and it simply had to stop. Janeway deliberately refused to listen to the voice inside her head that reminded her of just how much she enjoyed his little surprises. Surprises that were now occurring on a daily basis and sometimes several times a day. Kathryn was irritated with herself for not stopping him, sooner, but knew that to stop him she would have to talk to him in private and the last time she tried that is still clear in her memory. She needed to figure out what to say to him and how. And when. And where. Why did things have to be so complicated? Shed been trying to find an answer to her questions ever since the first time hes kissed her, but so far hadnt come up with an answer that satisfied her. Satisfied Kathryn groaned. The last two days Mike had gotten bolder in his moves and was no longer content at simply kissing and caressing. At the same time as she was dreading the next time she would meet him, she was wondering about what he would do and would she really want to stop him. Coming around the corner she noticed that she was getting closer to the Hydroponics bay. Deciding it was a good chance to check upon the last of the flowers Kes had planted. It was amazing how much the flowers had endured during their years on Voyager. Feeling a twinge of pain of the loss of a dear friend, Kathryn stepped in as the doors gave way and she strolled to the corner where she knew the flower would be. She wished desperately that Kes were still there with them, giving her insights on things around her. Shed had a way of making even the difficult things seem so clear and uncomplicated. Kathryn sighed. Everything alright in here Captain? She jumped in surprise of the familiar voice but still managed to give him an answer. Yes, of course." Then knowing she couldnt possibly delay the discussion any longer. Looking straight into his eyes Kathryn drew in a deep breath and repeated the main points of her argument. Look Lieutenant, this has got to stop. I can see how at first you meant well and while I do appreciate your concern, this cannot be allowed to go on. I have to insist that Her voice faltered as Mike leaned in closer and stared at her intensely. His hand reached out, brushing her breast before moving behind her and started to descent. Kathryn swallowed before continuing, that you no longer She tried to summon up what she was supposed to say to him, but the distraction he provided with his hands was too much and the words kept eluding her. Mike picked her up and carried her the few short steps to a counter behind her, sitting her on top of it. The last of her tries to reprimand him were ancient history when his lips descended on hers. While he continued to kiss her greedily, his hands started a journey down to her hips, reaching for the zipper and undoing it. Kathryn grabbed a hold of his shoulders and kept him close to her, giving him all her attention. For days the man had been teasing her mercilessly and shed been so very tempted to take her claim on him by smashing him against the nearest bulkhead, but hadnt. Now Mike was here, with his hand inside her panties with his fingers curling up against the center of her heat. He circled his finger up and down her slit, careful not to touch the places she most wanted him to. He carefully dipped one finger into her moist opening and Kathryn bucked against him, trying to get him deeper. Refusing to let her have him just yet, Mike slid his finger out of her, instead paying more attention to her clit, brushing against it few times. Frustrated at his playing she tried to take off his jacket, but he would have none of it. Mike, please Kathryn begged him. She didnt think she could take much more of his teasing, a week of foreplay was all she could handle. He seemed to take pity on her, inserting his finger back into her, and then pulling out again, forming a steady rhythm. Mike added another finger and continued his thrusting, while Kathryn grounded her hips to him, pushing herself closer to the ultimate goal. Gasping as she felt she climax drawing closer Kathryn pressed as much of herself as she could against him, knowing the orgasm was only a few thrusts away. Suddenly Mike separated from her, taking a few steps back and straightened his uniform. What the hell? Kathryn stared at him, desire and disbelief and annoyance warring on her face. Mike had a way of continuously finding new ways to surprise her, but this one didnt make her smile. She expected him to either apologize for rushing things or make a joke of some kind, but what he did was neither. Looking at her intently Ayala raised his hand close to his face. Kathryn blushed furiously as she realized that the hand was covered with her fluids, and the coloring on her cheeks only deepened as he brought it to his mouth and licked it. Without saying a word he walked out, leaving Kathryn in the Hydroponics Bay. After recovering from her initial shock, Kathryn ran her hands through her disheveled hair before rushing through the corridors to her quarters. Mike Ayala stood at the Captains door. Hed arrived as soon as hed been summoned but he was reluctant to ask for a permission to enter. He knew hed taken things too far and knew hed been called to the Captains quarters for a heavy reprimand at least, brig at worst. He was still hesitating when the doors slid open and revealed the Captain standing several feet away, with her arms folded in front of her. Mike stepped in cautiously. As soon as the doors closed behind him he heard the Captain voice, low and menacing. This has got to stop. Right here and now. This is getting way out of hand. What if someone saw us, what do you think that would accomplish? Captain, I am Janeway walked closer to him until she stood right in front him, her eyes firing daggers at him. NO! Enough is enough! Against everything Ive told you, you DARED to start something like that with me and then walk away?!? Games are over! Leaning in even closer so that she was only a few inches from his face she whispered, Finish it. NOW! Taken back by her words, Mike felt himself being grabbed and thrown to the floor. Somewhere deep in the back of his mind he made a note to himself to watch out for any possible future fights with her. She was a lot stronger than her appearance let one assume. Having Mike where she wanted him, Kathryn straddled him, placing her hands on his shoulders, effectively keeping him nailed to the floor. With the weight of her upper body on her arms, Kathryn started rubbing herself against Mike, grounding her hips to his. She could feel his erection grow as her arousal neared its peak. With the state of her stimulation from his games a few minutes before, it didnt take long for her to reach her orgasm. With a deep moan she came above him while her body trembled with the shocks of her pleasure. With her strength returning back to her heavy limbs, Kathryn got up from him and seemed to be studying him briefly before bending down to pat him on the shoulder, Oh poor Mike. Little bothered? Raising up again, she left him laying on the floor as she started making her way past her bedroom to the bathroom, all the while discarding her clothes. She really needed a shower. She was halfway through her bedroom when he caught up with her and drew her on the bed. Slowly waking up Kathryn remembered what had taken place the night before. It was hard not to, considering her lover was still with her in her bed, reminding her of the sweet hours spent together. Raising her head from her his chest she kissed his lips softly before getting up from the bed. "I really need that shower I never got last night," she muttered on her way to the bathroom. After a few minutes Kathryn stepped out of the shower and tying her robe around her she made her way to the living room where she was greeted by Mike, clad only in his boxers and a cup full of coffee. "Mmm.. Coffee and a gorgeous looking man like you.. What more could a girl ask for?" "In that order?" Kathryn reached for the coffee and took a sip of the hot liquid. Smiling at Mike over the rim of the coffee cup she said, "That's all up to your negotiation skills." The end, finally! Good lord it took forever! BACK TO THE ADULT STORY INDEX BACK TO THE MAIN PAGE |
