Save Money on Clothes

by Kay DeFreese

If you follow the suggestions on this list I guarantee that you will be able to slash your clothing budget.

  1. End of Season Sales
If you wait long enough that piece of clothing you want will hit the clearance rack. I have gotten clothes as much as 75 percent off by waiting.
  2. Shop the holiday sales.
You can always count on holidays like President's Day, Fourth of July, Memorial Day for a store to run sales.
  3. Shop for Gently Used.
      Consignment Shops
      Thrift Shops
      Yard and Rummage Sales
      Exchange with friends and family
      Hand Me Downs
Exchange clothes with your friends and family. At the church I attend women are always loaning out clothes that their children no longer wear. When the child outgrows the outfit then the outfit is returned back to the original owner. If someone lends you an outfit try to return it in as good a condition as you received it. Make sure the items are clean. Another source is hand me downs. I grew up wearing the clothes that my older cousins could no longer wear. Consignment shops are the most expensive of these five options but they are a great source of high quality clothes. Consignment shops are very picky in what they will accept on consignment. They will not accept clothese with obvious stains or outdated clothes. Thrift shops (like Goodwill and Salvation Army)are a little less expensive than consignment shops. Sometimes they run specials where certain days of the week the clothes are half priced. Garage sale and rummage sales are some of the cheapest places where you can find gently used clothes. The problem is that you have to spend time searching for clothes. I often buy clothes that are a size or two larger than I need for my kids and store them in a box. I label the box and store it in my attic.
  4. Learn to Sew
I had a home economics teacher once tell me that you can sew clothes for 1/3 of what it would cost you in the store. This may not be an option for some people because they hate to sew but I have always loved to sew. I can make these cute little shorts outfits for my kids in less than an hour.
  5. Keep your clothes in good repair.
It is true that "a stitch in time. Repair those little rips before they get bigger. Sew on that button before you lose it and treat stains immediately.
  6. Don't Spend a Fortune on Infant Clothes
Babies grow fast in the first year and that expensive outfit that you paid $30 for today will not fit your baby in two weeks. Those critters grow overnight!
  7. Spend money on Classic Styles Rather than Trendy.
  8. Shop the Outlet Malls
You can find some good deals at outlet malls. Last year I found my favorite jeans for $5.00 each! Be careful though because sometimes you can get the same item cheaper at the store when they have their sales.
    Outlet Bound
  9. Consider catalog shopping
