The town of Pewter City was laid out below us. It had taken us about two weeks to get this far. During those two weeks, Ash & I saw several different types of pokmon. Ashs Metapod evolved into Butterfree during our meeting with a Pokmon trainer name Samurai. But, that was in the past. I was looking forward to going to into Pewter City & healing my pokmon.
Yeah! Ash cheered. Pewter City!
Pewter City is the color of stone. This town has always been famous for stone.
Looking down, I saw a bearded man sitting Indian-style on the ground. Who are you?
Im Flint & youre standing on my merchandise. Want to buy some?
No thanks! Ash replied. My friends & I are travelling trying to become Pokmon masters!
They are, Misty interrupted. Im just happy being an ordinary trainer.
Pikachu let out a deep breath. Chu
Your pokmon sure looks worn out, Flint commented.
Yes. I would like to take it to the Pokmon Center, I admitted.
Follow me. Ill show you the way.
The four of us followed Flint into Pewter City & into the Pokmon Center. I placed Pikachu & the balls containing Pidgeotto, Ekans, & my new pokmon Wartortle on a tray. Ash put Charmander, Butterfree, & Pidgeotto on another tray. Please revitalize our pokmon, Ash asked the nurse.
Right away Ash! the nurse answered. That was when I got my first good look at her. So did Ash.
Nurse Joy? But this isnt Viridian City. This is Pewter City? he said.
The Joy in Viridian City is my little sister. Im the older Joy. Shes told me nice things about you & Kim. By the way, she said as she walked off. Have you seen the poster? Ash & I turned around.
Wow! I exclaimed. Before us was a poster for the Pokmon League Competition, the dream of all trainers.
All right! Ash exclaimed. The Pokmon League Regional Championships! Im going to enter!
Me, too!
Ha! Yeah, right! Misty laughed.
What? You dont think we can do it!
I dont have any doubts about you, Kim. Its Ash I doubt.
What do you mean? Ash inquired.
To compete you need to beat gym trainers from different towns & get their badges as proof.
Yes. I nodded, indicating that Misty should continue.
Gym leaders are different from your everyday trainers, the redhead continued. Theyre much tougher. You think you can do that, Ash?
Of course I can!
Heh, heh, heh. Someone was laughing. Ash turned around & saw Flint, chuckling.
Dont tell me you plan on challenging Brock, the Pewter City Gym Leader.
I do! I insisted.
You do? my friend asked.
Of course. Being the Pokmon League sounds like a lot of fun. Ill battle each gym leader if itll get me in the league.
Well. Good luck. Flint walked off while Misty, Ash, & I got some food since Joy was still busy with our pokmon.
You know, Ash. I could give you some help.
I dont need any help. Ill win my own battles by myself.
Mistys eyes narrowed. Then, she got up & walked off. Getting up, I ran after her, calling, Misty, wait!
She turned around. What?
Ash may not want your help, but I would.
You would?
Sure. What have I got to lose?
Well, lets work on your pokmon. Tell me what you have.
Pikachu, Pidgeotto, Ekans, & Wartortle.
Hmm. An electric, a flying, a poison, & a water pokmon. Four different types. Now, heres some hints: Water weakens rock pokemon. Water conducts electricity. Flying pokmon are weak against rock types. Poison might work against rock or it might not. Poison types are hard to determine. I think thatll be enough to start you off.
Thanks, Misty. I plan to head to the gym as soon as I get my pokmon. The three of us reported back to the center.
All your pokmon are back to normal, Joy reported as we approached the front desk. She pushed the trays forward. Ash & I collected our Pokmon & I immediately headed for the door.
Hey, Kim. Where are you going?
Pewter City Gym.
Oh. Good luck.
Thanks. Pikachu & I walked off & soon we stood before the stone Pewter City Gym. I pushed the doors & stepped inside cautiously. Hello? I called.
Pika? my pokmon said, which I interpreted as echoing my hello.
A light snapped on & a male voice said, Who goes there? I turned to the light & saw a boy somewhere between Ashs & my age sitting under the light.
Im Kim from Pallet & Ive come to earn your badge.
Is this your first gym match?
Yes, but Ive had a little coaching before coming here.
There are special rules.
Name them.
We will use two Pokmon each. And dont expect me to be easy on you just because I find you pretty.
Thats fine with me, Brock.
How long have you been with that pokmon?
Brocks question caught me off guard. Two weeks.
Yes. Your Pikachus in its cutest stage. It cant win.
Well see. Ive trained it nicely.
Brock snapped his finger & a rocky battlefield appeared & more lights came on. I stood on one end of the field with Pikachu. Brock stepped off his place & stood on the other end.
Let the match begin, he said.
Ready when you are. I wanted to see who his first Pokmon would be.
He threw the first ball. Geodude, go ! The ball opened & the rock pokmon appeared. I remembered Mistys hints, but I wanted to save my water pokmon for last.
Pikachu, go! My friend stepped onto the field.
Big thundershock, Pikachu!
PikaChuuu! A huge charge exploded from Pikachus body & struck Geodude, who was smoked & black after the charge.
Geodude, return! Brock recalled his pokmon. He grabbed another ball. Your Pikachus no match for Onix. Onix, go! He threw the ball. In a flash, the biggest rock pokmon I ever saw appeared. But, I was ready.
Pikachu, return! I called my friend back & brought out my secret weapon. I threw the ball. Pok ball, go! Wartortle appeared.
Brock gasped, A Wartortle! Thats a rare pokmon!
Wartortle! Water gun, full blast!
Wartortle let its full water gun power fly at Onix. Onix groaned from the assault. It was working ! Just as Misty said it would.
Keep it up, Wartortle! The turtle-like pokmon did so & Onix finally collapsed, unconscious.
Onix, return! The giant pokmon returned to its ball. I recalled Wartortle. Brock approached me.
That was impressive. You won, Kim. Youre as smart as you are pretty.
Thanks, Brock.
Heres a Boulder badge for defeating me.
I took the badge & looked at it. My first badge! I had taken the first step toward the Pokmon League Championships. Thanks again. Good luck, Brock. I hope you win your other gym matches. I left the gym & ran into Ash.
Ash! Are you going in next?
Yes. Im going to earn a badge. Did you win?
I did. Good luck, Ash. Im going to find Misty.
Okay. Ash entered the gym. I decided to see if Misty was back at the Pokmon Center. As I entered the double doors of the center, I spotted her in the waiting room. She spotted me, smiled, waved, & then came up to me.
How did it go?
It went great. I won! It actually seemed easy. Your hints really helped me, Misty. Thank you.
No problem. I feel good about helping a trainer out.
I hope Ash is doing okay.
If he doesnt, its his fault. I offered my help & he refused.
Hes my friend. Naturally, Id stick up for him.
Yeah, hes a really determined guy.
Misty, Pikachu, & I walked out of the center. Tell me how you won the match.
Well, Brock started with a Geodude. I sent Pikachu.
You managed to beat Geodude with Pikachu?
Yes. I had Pikachu give off a big thundershock. Brock recalled Geodude & sent Onix.
Thats a big pokmon.
I called Pikachu back & sent Wartortle in. Brock was pretty surprised. It beat Onix good. Oh, by the way, Brock said that he finds me pretty.
Wow. He sounds like a nice guy when hes not in a Pokmon match.
You bet I am, another voice said. The two of us turned around & saw Brock with Ash, who looked pretty happy.
I did it! I got a Boulder badge! Ash opened one side of his jacket & showed the badge pinned there.
Brocks joining us on our Pokmon journey, Ash continued. His dad will take over where Brock left off.
Welcome aboard Brock, I said, shaking his hand.
Thanks. And dont worry about more competition. Im training to be the worlds best Pokmon breeder.
We sure could use a Pokmon breeder.
Pika.
With our new friend Brock ready to go, the five of us began our journey out of Pewter City & towards our next adventure.
