Holodeck malfunctions

“Captain, your turn.”

“Don’t challenge me, lieutenant! You don’t have any chance!

Said Janeway jokingly and pointed the pool cue onto the black ball.

“Focus…”

Kathryn leaned over the table.
This last ball in and she won the game.
Half her crew was standing around her, Tom and the pool table.
She looked at the ball, the hole, and back to the ball.
One, two, three and- shot!

“HATSCHIIIIIIIIIIII!!!!!!!!!”

Came it from behind her. She shocked and hit the white ball on a totally
wrong angel and of course missed its goal.
Janeway was stunned. Slowly she turned round.

“Who was that?”

She asked in a dangerously sounding voice.

It was quiet.

Everybody was looking from her to – Chakotay!
He had his glare somewhere on an invisible point on the floor.

“Commander?”

She stepped into his personal space and lifted his head with her fingers on
his chin.

“You don’t want by any chance explain yourself, do you?!”

Chakotay had a, in his situation absolute silly grin on his face.

“Sorry, Captain.”

He said eventually and took her hand to his mouth and kissed it slightly.
Kathryn melted. How could she ever be angry with him if he looked at her
like a little puppy?!

“Well, Captain,”

Tom interrupted her thoughts,

“it looks like I won.
Revenge tomorrow night?”

Janeway took her glare of Chakotay and looked at Tom.

“You bet!”

She said with sparkles glowing up in her eyes, only for a second, but Tom
saw them. Oh, oh. What had he gotten himself into this time?

“Commander, I think you its only fair you join me for a coffee after this,uh?”

She smirked.
The crew was gone by now.
Everybody returned to his or her own activities.
“Of course, Captain.”
Laughing she took his arm and went over to where Sandrine was serving drinks to some crewmembers and holograms.
They both took a seat by the bar.

“Two Coffee.Black, please.”
Chakotay ordered.

“Oui, oui.Une second, please.”
Came the quick reply of Sandrine She swirled around the bar, and came quick with two pots of coffee back.

“Here, Cherie.”
She turned to Janeway.

“Une coffee for ou, and une coffee for the andsome man of urs.”
She smiled as she saw Kathryn’s face, only knowing too well what she was thinking, having discussed that subject with her at least thousand times.
“Thank you.”
Said Chakotay and passed Kathryn her cup.
“I didn’t know you like black coffee?”
Kathryn tried to get to other thought, and turned in her seat to face Chakotay.
“Well, I learned from the best-“

“-Coffee drinker.”
Janeway finished the sentence.
“Yeah, yeah.”
She laughed. Then slowly, closing her eyes, smelled on her coffee.
“Hmm…”
She gave a slight moan from her. The sight of her fascinated Chakotay.
How easy to please she was.
Just a cup of coffee and her world was perfect.
A bit longer she smelled on her steaming coffee and then lifted it to her lips.
Chakotay totally forgot about his coffee, he was too busy to watch Janeway. >SSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSP< Just as Janeway enjoyed her first sip, the coffee in her mouth and the cup in her hand disappeared.
“What--?!”
Janeway opened her eyes.
What she saw befuddled her. Sandrine’s bar seemed to disappear.
Piece by piece the bar vanished. Sandrine, who was just making drinks for a few holograms, vanished in action.
The table seemed to get hols and then vanished.
“Woooooooooou!”
Kathryn shouted as the chair underneath her disappeared on a sudden
Chakotay griped her just in time and rescued her from falling to the floor
Tightly he held her to him.
They cowered on the floor.
The sight that was playing in front of him amazed Chakotay.
Everything in the holodeck disappeared.
Including the other crewmembers. It seemed like ages later when the loud noise stopped.
But he was pretty certain that it only lasted one or two minutes or so. Carefully he looked around. Everything of the Sandrine’s bar was gone.
So was the crew.
Left only was the holodeck with its normal looking blank white-silvery walls. He realized movement in his arms and saw with relieve that Kathryn was still there with him.
“Chakotay?”
Kathryn looked asking at him.
He just shrugged.
She looked slowly around the room.
“What did just-?”
She was interrupted by that horribly loud sound that a few seconds ago somehow managed to vanish the entire programme PLUS her crew. >SSSSSSSSSSSSSSP< When it stopped they both dared to look up again.
They realized the delta flyer in the middle of the room.
“What the heck is going on?”
She asked, standing up and walking towards the flyer.
Chakotay followed her
He had no idea of what was going on and therefore kept quiet. Kathryn hit her combadge.
“Janeway to engineering.”
No answer. She turned to Chakotay.
With a nod asking him to try.
“Chakotay to bridge.”
He didn’t have any more luck than she did.
“Well, looks like we are on our own to try to find out what’s going on here.”

“It seems.”
Chakotay acknowledged.
Carefully they were walking up the room.
“It looks like the programme in which Tom designed the delta flyer.”

“That’s strange.I thought Tom deleted it after we build the flyer.”

“Obviously not.”
They both were walking up and down the holodeck.
Trying to find any clue of what was going on.
“Computer, exit.”
Janeway said eventually, having enough seen and wanting to do something.
“Unable to comply.”
Janeway sighed.
“Specify.”
She said.
Lifting her chin as if wanting to show that she was definitely in charge here and no computer should dare to hide information from her.
“The holodeck controls are offline.”
Came a cold, rational response.
“That doesn’t explain it.Computer what is going on?”

“Unable to comply.”
Janeway groaned.
“Computer,”
Chakotay gave it a try.
“What programme is this?”

“The programme currently running is ‘delta flyer 001’, programme by Thomas Eugen Paris.”
Chakotay nodded.
“Computer what happened to the programme ‘Chez Sandrine’?”

“The programme ‘Chez Sandrine’ is in databank 024.”

“Why is it not running?”

“’Chez Sandrine’ has not been activated. The programme currently running is ‘delta flyer 001’.”

“Computer, activate programme ‘Chez Sandrine’.”

“Unable to comply.”
Kathryn sighed. Chakotay shook his head but decided to give it another try.
“Computer, who activated the programme ‘delta flyer 001’?”

“Unable to comply.”

“Thank you very much.”
He whispered.
“That leaves the same question as at the beginning.‘what the heck is going on?’”
Chakotay shrugged.
“Maybe we just should w-“
he was interrupted by a loud noise.
THE noise. >SSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSP<
“Kathryn! Kathryn, come here!”
He shouted against the sound. Kathryn obviously understood and ran over to him.
He wasn’t certain whether she had hearted his voice or figured out herself that it was best to stay together.
They had seen how the others disappeared and figured that it would be better to be in a ‘group’ than being alone and because they had been thrown in this scenario together it was only logical that this would happen again. The delta flyer started to disappear.
Kathryn reached Chakotay just in time, before it fully vanished and the other equipment that lay around started to vanish as well. Again, like the last time, Chakotay held her tight to him.
Out of reflex they both shut their eyes to shield themselves for the bright light that this time came with the sound. The noise got more and more quiet, till it eventually disappeared like the rest of the programme.
Slowly they opened their eyes. The first thing they realized was that everything seemed white and black.
“Let me guess,”
Kathryn said sarcastically.
“’Captain Proton chapter whatever’.”
Chakotay nodded.
“When we get back we should stop Mr.Paris from writing more holodeck programmes.I really can’t be bothered meeting a certain ‘Chaotica’ right now.”

“I absolutely agree.”
>Surrender!< Came it from behind him. Annoyed Janeway turned round.
She now this only too well.
What was that chapter called? ‘Madden the Captain’? ‘Satan’s robot’ came over to her and graped her by her arms.
Kathryn sighed
What comes next? Oh, right…THREE, TWO, ONE-
“Fool!!!!”
Came it from the other end.
“Don’t you recognise the queen of the spider people???”
*Great, my ‘lover’!*
Kathryn thought and saw Chakotay smirk.
“Arachnia, my bride.I knew you’d return to me one day.”
He caressed her cheek. Then continued.
“So I can watch you die!”
Kathryn lifted an eyebrow.
This chapter seemed familiar but she couldn’t remember being here before. She more certainly hadn’t been acting in this programme at any point in time! Well, once but that was, she recalled, the chapter ‘bride of Chaotica’.
And guess who was the lucky bride??? Chaotica broke out in ridiculers sounding laugher. Annoyed she leaned back onto ‘satan’s robot’. She heard Chaotica chatting away about some enemies she had not the slightest clue what he was talking about.
But at the moment she wasn’t really interested. She turned to Chakotay who seemed somehow very uncomfortable with the situation.
“I’m open to suggestions.”
She offered. Chakotay looked at her.
Didn’t she say that once before? Yes, he remembered.
That day, in which he was thrown back in time and walked with Kathryn through different timeframes, they encountered this programme. *Interesting.
So that must have been the future.
Well, now it’s the present
I guess…* Chakotay got himself now totally confused and thought he might better answer Kathryn who seemed kind of annoyed by being hold capture by ‘Satan’s robot’
He could understand her well.
“Our best bet is to play along.”
He said eventually, looking at her with a ‘you’re-doing-well’ look.
“Don’t let me stop you.”

“I’m not the one he’s in love with.”
He conquered. Kathryn rolled her eyes. She was just going to say something about it when Chaotica interrupted their conversation.
“Arachnia!”
*What the heck does he want now.* She looked up at him.
He was coming closer with a potion in his hands, saying something about, what she remembered being her last visit on the holodeck.
Kathryn didn’t listen to what he was saying.
“Are this characters always this ridicules?”
She just ignored Chaotica and continued her conversation with Chakotay, which didn’t seem to bother Chaotica in any way.
He just kept chatting about some ‘secret weapon’ to her. Kathryn rolled her eyes.
“Arachnia!”
Came it sarcastically from Chakotay’s side. *I can’t expect much help from there I guess.* Kathryn figured eventually.
“Please,”
She started.
“I maybe was a reticule to think I would ever have tried to deceive you.”
She continued.
“I have come to warn you of a theemdish plash.”
Chaotica looked questioning at her.
She turned to Chakotay for help. He looked up, totally surprised that he had to do something himself now. Quickly he thought of something.
“By aliens from the eighth dimension.”
Chaotica broke out in laugher again. *great,* Chakotay remembered. *I got this wrong the last time.
Why didn’t I just say fifth or whatever to shut him up.*
“Eighth?”
Chaotica turned to Chakotay.
Being dead serious on a sudden.
“Everyone knows there are only fife dimensions.”
Kathryn looked over to him.
Ashamed he glanced to the ground. Kathryn looked back at Chaotica, ready for a reply, as on a sudden that by now familiar sound appeared again. >SSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSP< I was louder this time.
Chakotay ran over to Kathryn, trying to get a hold on her, which was not easy since she was tied up.
“What is going on? Whose work is this?”
Chaotica looked at her and Chakotay.
“Arachnia, you betrayed me again.I’ll get you for this!!!!!”
His voice disappeared in the loud sound and so did he a second later.
“Kathryn! Take my hand!”
Kathryn took Chakotay’s hand, which rescued her from falling as the ‘bed’ she was lying on disappeared. As before they were just cowering on the floor; keeping their eyes shut to shield them from the light. After a little while it grew quiet again. Slowly they opened their eyes. They were sitting in a little boat that was made of wood.
Birds were singing around them.
They were drifting down a river, which was encircled by big green trees. Everything smelled like pure nature. Kathryn immediately felt well and secured in that place.
“Which programme could that be?”
She asked in a soft voice, clearly showing that she enjoyed being here. *Oh, oh…* Chakotay swallowed.
“I..um,… I wrote this programme a while ago.Just to remember old times.”
He tried. Kathryn looked at him.
“You wrote this, Chakotay? It’s beautiful! Why did you never show it to me?”
Kathryn could feel Chakotay getting nervous.
“Chakotay, what’s wrong?”
She asked, seriously growing worried about him.
“Don’t you think this is a nice place?”

“Yes,”
He whispered,
“it’s the best place in the whole universe.”
Kathryn looked at him.
It didn’t make sense to her.
When he liked that programme that much, why being so nervous about it?! Her thoughts were interrupted by a bump. She turned round and realized that they just arrived at the bank.
“Chakotay let’s go and examinant this place!”
She said excited and curious of what was still to come.
“We have to remember to visit this programme as soon as we have everything sorted on Voyager.”

“Computer, what programme is currently-“
Chakotay interrupted her.
“Kathryn!”
He nearly shouted.
“I am sure we can spend some time here later on, but for now we should just wait here in that boat and stay together till the next programme change comes.”
Kathryn, who was already with one foot out of the boat, turned round.
“You can’t be serious, right? Chakotay, we just encountered the best programme we had yet.I say we should take a look around. Are you coming with me, or staying?”
Chakotay obviously grew very uncomfortable with the whole situation.
“Kathryn, please.Lets just wait here. It’s better if we stay together, you know that too.”
He practically begged her. Kathryn grew infuriated.
“Chakotay, I don’t understand at all what you are trying to tell me here! Either we stay together and you come with me or we go each our own way. Either way, I don’t except any other ‘possible’ option.I am still the Captain.I give the orders around here.Understood?!”
Full stop.
That was clear. Chakotay saw himself in a very uncomfortable position. Should he just let her wander off on her own and risk loosing her somewhere in another dimension, or whatever they were experiencing, or should he go with her and try to make the best of this all. He decided for his second option.
Everything was better than loosing her here.
“All right.”
He said eventually.
“But only because we have to stay together and you made it perfectly clear that this seems to be the only way to do this.
I will come with you, if that’s what it takes.”
Kathryn nodded. She couldn’t see the big deal behind this whole situation.
They would just wander a bit around till they were thrown into another scenario.
They were helpless to this anyway. *Funny,* She thought. *I’m sure I have seen this boat before.* Chakotay followed her quickly.
He seemed to have practise, Kathryn realized as he climbed out of the boat as if doing it every day.
“We should try to stay as close together as possible in case the scenario changes as quickly as at the first time again.”
Chakotay suggested and took Kathryn’s hand.
“Agreed.”
She didn’t pull her hand away. For a while they were just wandering around the forest they found themselves in.
“Strange.”
Said Kathryn suddenly. Chakotay swallowed.
“What?”
He asked carefully.
“This programme.”
She answered.
“I am sure I know this environment but also I’m convinced I never activated this programme before.”
Chakotay didn’t continue that conversation.
“Come this way.”
He said instead. Kathryn stopped.
“Why do I get the feeling you’re hiding something from me?”
Chakotay stopped as well.
“I don’t know what you mean?!”
Kathryn looked closely at him.
“Oh, but I think you do.Why for instance do you try to prevent me from going to the west of the forest? You didn’t think I haven’t noticed, did you?”

“Kathryn, I’m not-“
She cut him off.
“Yes, you are, Chakotay. And why weren’t I supposed to ask the computer about the programme either?”

“Kathryn, I didn’t mean-“
She cut him off again.
“Chakotay, I don’t judge you here,”
She said in a softer tone as before, even though she could see that poor Chakotay more and more felt like being in a courtroom.
“I just want to know what’s going on!”
She finished and waited for an answer. Chakotay sighed and looked to the ground.
When after a few minutes still didn’t come anything, Kathryn decided to take the matter into her own hands.
“Computer,”
She said slowly, looking at Chakotay, whose head flipped up when she said the word. His eyes were pleading with her not to continue but Kathryn was way too far >from stopping now.
She wanted the truth.
Now!
“which programme is currently running?”
She held eye contact with Chakotay who looked like this would be the last minute of his life.
Kathryn felt sorry for him, but if he wouldn’t tell her what she wanted to know she had to find out herself.
“The name of the programme currently running is ‘MyLove –alwaysNE’”
Kathryn was bewildered.
My love? What could this programme be about? She knew he always loved the forest, but giving it the name ‘MyLove’…? And what did NE stand for? Lots of questions Kathryn needed an answer for.
“Computer,”
She continued, not lifting her gaze of Chakotay.
“What does ‘NE’ stand for?”

“This information is secured.”

“Override code ‘Janeway longa three’.”

“Override code ‘Janeway longa three’ not accepted.”
Janeway stepped closer to Chakotay, intruding his personal space.
She stopped only centimetres in front of him, lifting her chin to be able to look into his eyes.
“Override it.”
She said in a voice that could kill. Chakotay swallowed.
“I can’t, Kathryn.”
He whispered. What was that? Kathryn wasn’t sure she actually saw this. A quiet tear rolled down his left cheek. This was what it took to break her heart. Her own eyes began to wet. Without her even realizing one of her hands stole its way to his chest, were it rested directly over his heart.
“Why?”
She whispered back, having difficulty to hold her voice.
“Chakotay, please, talk to me.Don’t have secrets from me.”
She pleaded. Chakotay looked her in her eyes.
He had always been amazed by the fact how long, despite her height, she could hold her head up by looking into someone’s eyes and standing only inches away from him or her. But right now it didn’t matter.
He only saw her eyes and the pure hurt in them, because she believed he didn’t trust her anymore.
He so wanted to tell her.
So wanted to share this with her, but he couldn’t. The risk was too big. What if she hated him for this afterwards? What if she turned away from him and he lost her.
Forever.
He couldn’t bear that thought.
“Kathryn,”
He started to speak in a husky voice.
“please, I don’t want to hurt you, but I can’t tell you. Please, try to understand.”
He begged her.
“Chakotay, how can I? Why don’t you tell me what’s going on? We wanted to share everything, remember? Don’t have secrets from me.”
The broken woman in his arms was his undoing. But how was he supposed to explain? How could he make her understand without hurting her even more? He didn’t know.
“What do you expect me to do? You know I would do everything when you ask me for it, Kathryn.Whether you give me the order or not.”
Kathryn’s hand reached up to wipe the tears off his cheek. This was something bigger than just ‘a’ secret, she realized.
But what could it be that Chakotay hold so dear? It had to be something really special, but what?
“Tell me what it is, this holo-programme is about.”
She said in a voice hardly loud enough for him to understand. He dropped his head. Then he swallowed deeply and looked her directly into her eyes.
“Kathryn, if I do so, promise me you won’t be angry with me, whatever happens. That it won’t destroy the relationship we have, that you still will talk to me afterwards.”
Kathryn nodded.
“Sure I will, Chakotay. There is nothing that could destroy what we share Never could anything come put our friendship in danger. We survived some arguments remember? This can’t be half as bad.”
Chakotay nodded his acceptation, and pointed to the west, the way he denied her to go first. Kathryn looked for a while longer at him, than turned in the pointed direction.
Slowly she made her way through the trees, which on a sudden seemed to watch her every move. Chakotay stood there for a few seconds, watching her walk away, hoping this wouldn’t be the crack in their friendship he so treasured. Then he followed her. After a few minutes walk Kathryn stopped. She looked back at Chakotay. Then back at an old tree in front of her. The air was moist, but warm. It was getting dark. The moon started to shine down at them. This brought memories back to her she thought of as long forgotten. Slowly she walked nearer to the tree in front of her. Chakotay swallowed. Knowing what she knew at this moment. Her hand brushed the green of the tree away to free a spot on the trees bark. There it was. A little heart cut into the trees bark. A heart with two letters on each side. K & C She remembered as if it was yesterday. Some time ago they stranded on a planet they named ‘New Earth’. This was the place they shared their first kiss. Under this tree she gave the man of her dreams her soul and her heart. Slowly she turned to Chakotay.
“NE stands for ‘New Earth’.”
She simply stated. Chakotay nodded. She came closer. A confused look on her face.
“You wrote a programme about New Earth?”

“Yes.”
He whispered.
“Chakotay,-“
she started but this time was cut off by him.
“Kathryn, I know that this is not what you wanted.
But you couldn’t expect me to give everything up. You knew I loved you. You knew I couldn’t let go so easily. You promised me your love, Here, under this tree. How where I supposed to just forget about it after we came back to voyager?”
Kathryn shook her head, but couldn’t answer, couldn’t trust her voice to obey her.
“Kathryn, please. You promised me this wouldn’t change anything in our relationship.”
Carefully she stepped closer.
“Chakotay,”
She eventually managed.
“I promised you that this would not influence how I think about you, that I wouldn’t be angry. I hold my word. But I can’t promise you that our relationship will be the same.”
He opened his mouth, ready to say something but she quietly stopped him by putting her finger over his mouth and shaking her head.
“No, let me finish. When we came back from new earth, I thought I couldn’t give in to my feelings, hoped we would come home in a few weeks or so, hoped of a live with my fiancé, Mark.”
She saw that something changed in Chakotay’s face, but wasn’t quite sure what it was. She continued.
“But now, everything is different. We have been out here in the delta quadrant for nearly 7 years now. I know that a live with Mark back home won’t be, I know that maybe we never will reach home. I changed Chakotay, But I also forgot about what happened 7 years ago. Forgot those feelings I had, Forgot what we promised each other.”
She swallowed.
This wasn’t easy to her, but she had to do this now. She went far too far already to stop now, and knew that this was the right thing to do. This was what she should have done a long time ago.
“Chakotay, our relationship will change from this point onwards. I want us to be together. Not just as Captain and first officer. Not just as friends. Let us continue from where we left of on New Earth. Let us try to build a life. Together. That is of course if you do want us to do so. If you still feel the love for me than 7 years ago.”
Chakotay just kept staring at her. This was obviously not what he had expected her to say. Sure he wanted her. Sure he agreed with everything she had said. For crying out loud, Yes!!! Yes!!! But he couldn’t answer. He was so happy. His voice didn’t seem to want what he wanted.
“Chakotay?”
Kathryn became unsure. Why didn’t he answer? She saw different emotions fighting in his eyes. Which ones it were she couldn’t tell, but was sure she saw ‘love’ winning. Was she right?
“Chakotay?”
she tried again. Hoping to get the answer she hoped for. She was certain that he would love her the way he did seven years ago, why keeping this programme otherwise? Or was it a programme he created short after they left? Maybe he never activated it since. Maybe she misunderstood the whole situation. Suddenly she wasn’t so sure anymore. Chakotay still hadn’t answered. He saw the emotions fighting in her eyes now. He knew he had to get himself to acknowledge her pleading eyes, or everything was lost again.
“Yes, Kathryn.”
He managed finally. He could see the deep relieve in her eyes, and could hear he sigh slightly. She was not the only one being relieved. His heart just made a jump to the alpha quadrant and back again.
“I love you.”
He whispered. She smiled at him, stepping closer.
“I love you too.”
She said when standing directly in front of him. He leaned down to her, and slightly brushed his lips over hers, Kathryn drew closer, not wanting to end this yet. They both grew more and more passionate. Their kisses more and more intense. >SSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSP< They both shocked back.
“Oh, no! not again.”
Everthing around them started to disappear. The river, The trees, THEIR tree, And with it their heart, which Chakotay cut into the trees bark a long time ago. They both held onto each other till the sound disappeared. ~~~
“ere you go.Two coffee olè.”
Confused they both looked up. They were sitting in Sandrine’s bar again, holding each other close. No one seemed to have realized it yet. Quickly Kathryn draw away from Chakotay who looked as confused as she did. They both took their coffee. Sandrine smiled at Kathryn, as she went to her next customer. A knowing smile. Kathryn leaned back, perplexed. For a while they just quietly sat there. No one in the bar seemed to remember anything strange going on.
“Chakotay,”
She said after a bit.
“Do you remember?”
He nodded. Kathryn looked deeply at him. He seemed a bit hurt by her earlier reaction.
“Kathryn?”
He asked.
“Hmm?”

“You do still mean what you said, don’t you?”
His eyes pleading with hers.
“Yes.”
She said simply. Chakotay drew a sigh of relieve.
“Good.”
They both smiled at each other.
“Yet,”
Kathryn started again, and made Chakotay sit straight up for a moment.
But she just smiled at him, ensuring him that she didn’t change her mind.
“I’d love to know what was going on.”

“So do I.”
As if on command they both looked over to the pool table, where Tom and B’Elanna were whispering and laughing, Sandrine standing close to them.
“Do you reckon?”
Kathryn left the rest unsaid.
“Maybe.”
Chakotay replied. On the other side of the room Sandrine turned round and caught Kathryn’s gaze. She smiled. A knowing smile… ~The end~
