There are varying dates on different records for his birth. His death certificate said he was 84 years, 2 months, and 6 days old at his death. This would give him a birthdate of November 25, 1854. Each of his census records has him born about 1853 Could he be the same Thomas that was christened in 1852? How to explain the discrepancy in age? Thomas did not read or write when he came to America. He may not have known when he was born. This was not uncommon for those born before the twentieth century. When Thomas needed to give an age for the manifests, I think he took a good guess and went with it. |
