Meets twice each month at the LARAC Arts Services Center, downtown Glens Falls, NY for the following sessions:

Morning Session:
the 1st Thursday of each month

10:00 writing time
10:30 meeting begins

Evening Session:
the 3rd Thursday of each month

7:00 writing time
7:30 meeting begins

Who are we?

Originally founded in August 1997, the Glens Falls Writers Group in its current form started meeting at LARAC’s old offices above Ridge Street in April 1998. We are very excited to continue our relationship with LARAC (the Lower Adirondack Regional Arts Council) at their lovely Arts Services Center at 7 Lapham Place.

From the start, membership in the GFWG has been open to all levels and genres of writers. There are no dues, no newsletters, no competition. We meet monthly to exchange information, offer support and give constructive criticism to our writing efforts.

The main requisite of being in the group is, simply, that you write. Singers sing. Painters paint. Writers write. Quantity isn’t the issue; commitment to your craft is. Whether you create one piece a year or one a month, we want to be a sounding board, a spring board, a scoreboard for your progress.

Please Note: We do charge $1 per person per meeting toward LARAC’s building use fee to help defray utility costs.

Meeting Structure

Writing Time: New to the meeting structure is a half-hour writing time at the beginning of each meeting. This can be used a quiet time for work on your own project or to follow on a provided group writing prompt.

Goals: Next we have a brief introduction/catch up exchange. This is where we offer our monthly writing goals and dreams, and get to know newcomers.

Knowledge Sharing: As time allows, we exchange information and offer advice on general writing topics. However, we like to save enough time for the final portion of the meeting, which is devoted to critiques:

Critiques: Each month a member or two (sometimes more) brings in pieces for review. We determine what sort of help the writer is hoping to get (voice? character? plot? everything?), then take them home to read and bring back the following month. Critiques are offered in constructive, supportive terms, with as much detail and criticism as the author is comfortable taking.

If you are looking for guidance and friendly faces as you sort out your writing goals, please consider joining us. We meet at the LARAC Arts Services Center, 7 Lapham Place, Downtown Glens Falls. Morning meetings are held the first Thursday of each month from 10 a.m. - noon and the evening meetings happen the third Thursday from 7 - 9 p.m.
