| Classroom Management Approach | ||||
| Establishing an effective classroom management system is essential to promote and support student learning. Classroom conditions and student behaviors are the two areas that need to be assessed and managed to create and maintain a desired learning environment. 1. Addressing Student Behaviors through Assertive Discipline Approach Assertive teachers listen carefully to what their students have to say, speak respectfully to them, and treat everyone fairly (not necessarily equally). * Clearly stated classroom rules and procedures and concise directions are given to students who need to have outside control *Teacher is respectful when addressing misbehavior *Teacher will react confidently and quickly in situations that require behavior management. *Students who comply with rules are positively reinforced *Allows for the building of trusting relationships between teacher and student 2. Create an Effective Classroom Environment Adapting the classroom environment to prevent misbehaviors as well as encourage appropriate behaviors. *An organized classroom has materials and resources accessible, clutter is limited, and distractions are minimized. *The arrangement of desks and clearly defined work areas will communicate to students how they will interact with the teacher and with other students during instruction and learning activities. *Schedules and lessons are adjusted for the learners. *Highly structured lessons are followed by lessons/activities that involve more movement. *Lengths of lessons are monitored and adjusted to meet student individual needs. *Snack time and stretch and break times are part of the daily routine *Students know when they will go to specials: music, art, gym, etc by seeing posted schedule on the wall Reference Canter, L., & Canter, M.
