A new story! And my own series! I finally started it like I said I would! Here is the first chapter to Fire in the Night, the first book of the series! Disclaimer: I do not own sailor moon. Naoko does. ********** Fire in the Night Chapter 1 ********** Serena ran through the hall carrying the weakened child. Her blonde hair flowing behind her. She flicked at her face as the girl's brown hair blew into her eyes. Serena stopped at an intersection in the hallway. Her mind wasn't thinking clearly. The smoke was heavy. She breathed it in. Luckily she heard the sirens. Was it sirens? Or was it yelling? Was someone still trapped in the building? No. She saw the colorful lights that gleamed though the black smoke. She ran that way. The weight of the child growing heavier. She glanced around. Smoke had filled up the hallway and was seeping into the rooms it had not taken over. Flames could be heard crackling and breaking chairs on the second floor. Serena saw it! The exit out of the lobby. She ran for it. She was almost there! She almost made it. She tripped on a unseen table leg that had broken off when the previous people had left. The child went flinging from her arms. Serena screamed out as her head hit the floor. The pain was throbbing. She looked up and saw the body of the girl lay in front of her. She tried to get onto her feet but she only fell back down. Her cheek hit the soft plush carpet. Sleep. That was what she wanted sleep. She forgot about the girl. She forgot about the smoke and the fire. She just closed her eyes and slipped into a world of dreams and happiness. Serena woke up. All she saw was white. White was everywhere. Gleaming and hurting her eyes. She closed them the brightness to intense to handle. `Am I in heaven?' she thought. She opened her eyes. A figure moved and peered down at her. Was that a halo she saw on the figures head? Was that an angel? "Ahh... I see you have woken up Miss. Anderson. You have been sleeping quite while!" Serena focused her eyes on the figure. When all the shapes came together she saw a person with brown hair. He was wearing a white doctors suit. And a bright light was shining above his head. "Where am I?" Serena asked trying to sit up. She was to weak and fell back down onto the bed. "You are at the hospital. Do you remember anything that happened?" Serena thought. She couldn't think clearly. All she remembered was black smoke and fire. FIRE! Oh god! The fire! Brittany! What happened to Brittany! Serena bolted up on the bed. Her weakness forgotten. "OH MY GOD!! Brittany! Is she ok!?!" Serena asked turning to the doctor. The doctor looked up at Serena surprised, then looked down with sadness. "You mean that little girl the police found laying in front of you? She was dead before they even found her. The smoke had killed her. We found out she had been dead for a long time. Considering you weren't dead you were probably still trying to find your way out of the hotel when she died," Serena let the doctor's voice drown out. Brittany was dead! Her mind traveled back to the time she was still alive. The moment just before the fire. ***Flash Back*** Serena and her family along with her aunt and uncle and her little cousin Brittany walked happily into the Sunridge Hotel. They had just spent the day at the beach and now exhausted they wanted to go to sleep in their cozy rooms for the night. Serena's parents shared a room, her aunt and uncle shared a room, and her and Brittany shared a room. Serena didn't mind. She loved her little five year old cousin. After she tucked her in, Serena climbed into bed herself. It seemed like it was only moments later when she heard a siren going off. She knew what that siren meant! FIRE! She looked over at Brittany's bed to have found her gone! She could hear rustling on the floor above. People's yells and screams. Serena was frantic! She ran to her aunt and uncle's room. They weren't there. She ran to her parents room. They weren't there either. Where is everyone!?! Serena thought. She ran down the hallway. It was quite hard. Everyone was running the opposite way of her. They kept trying to push her back. About half way down the hall, Serena heard the soft cries of a child. She ran towards the sound. It came to the stair way that lead to the second floor. She kept walking up. She soon felt heat sweep over her body as neared the top. When she got there, the floor was abandoned. Fire could be seen at the end of the hallway. Smoke had already filled up the floor. Looking around she saw a small figure huddled by a room. She ran to it. "BRITTANY!" Serena yelled at the figure. The child popped her head up. Her cheeks were stained with tears and a wild fear was in her eyes. "SERENA!" Serena ran to the crying child and scooped her into her arms. Her face was smudged with dirt and her little fingers seemed burnt. Serena ran down the stairs carrying the child. She tried to listen to the little words the child was making. "I'm sorry Serena. I didn't mean to. I just saw the little sticks. They looked fun. I was just playing with them. Then they started to sparkle. And then they turned into fire. I dropped the stick and ran! I'm sorry Serena! I didn't mean to," said Brittany, tears streaming down her cheeks. Serena ran down the first floor hallway and pass her room. She suddenly heard a yell come from behind her. She turned around and saw her parents running towards her. Serena stopped and waited for them. Just then a sort of crackling sound was made. It was soft at first but then it grew louder. Next thing Serena knew was the floor crashing down right where her parents were. Serena screamed in fright. She backed down to the end of the hallway and huddled in the little corner. It seemed like the fire wanted to take up the rooms first before it headed for the two girls. But the smoke was quicker. It spread quickly around the floor. Serena coughed and was soon followed with Brittany. The little girl had her face between the crevices of Serena's neck and shoulder. She was coughing uncontrollably. Serena could fear tears drop down onto her body, mingling with the sweat that was already there. She stayed in the little corner. She didn't know what to do! She felt Brittany's body shaking from fear. After awhile her body became still besides the soft rising and falling of her chest. Serena's parents were probably looking for her when the fire started. They probably said to her aunt and uncle to get out and they would get her and Brittany. Oh! She should have stayed in the room! Serena thought. But if she did, would Brittany still be alive? Would her parents have found the little child, crying on the third floor? Serena slowly got up. She had to find her way out! ***End Flash Back*** Serena felt soft tears slide down her cheeks, as she stood in front of the three coffins. The funeral was long and sad. Her aunt and uncle were beside her. She could hear the sobs of her aunt. She looked over at her uncle. Tears were sliding down his cheeks but he was silent. After the funeral Serena stepped between the coffins of her parents. She cried softly for them before she went over to Brittany. "Oh Brittany. I am so sorry!" she said in a whisper, "If only I had left quicker! You would still be alive. I am so sorry Brittany!" Serena felt even more hot tears burn down her face. Soon she heard the calling of her aunt and uncle. She ran over to them and got into the car. Her aunt and uncle were now her legal guardians. The ride to the house was silent. Once they got there, everyone piled out. No one spoke. Serena walked to her room. The room she always slept in when she went over to there house. She closed the door silently and laid down on her bed. She wanted to sleep. But it was hard to. She could hear the voices of her aunt and uncle fighting. She couldn't make out the words but the yelling was still loud enough to keep her awake. After a few moments the yelling died down. She soon heard her aunt come to her bed room door. She knocked softly. "Serena. Time to eat," Serena slowly got out of bed and went to open the door. What she saw surprised her. Her aunts eyes were red from crying but they held something. To Serena it looked like hate. The three sat around the small table in the kitchen. Serena sat in Brittany's seat. For some reason she just didn't feel right. They ate dinner in silence. Serena was afraid to look up. She was afraid to look into the eyes of her relatives. When she was done she looked over at her aunt to say thank you for the dinner. There eyes met. Serena saw the same thing in her eyes and she knew what it was. Even though she was not saying it, her aunt was silently screaming at her. Screaming at her for letting her baby, her little girl, her precious child die. She knew what her aunt and uncle were fighting about. Her aunt wanted to throw her into an orphanage. Her uncle wanted to keep her. She looked over at her uncle. He didn't blame her for her daughter's death. But still Serena still felt sadder. Her aunt was her mom's sister. She was connected to her aunt by blood. And it was sad that her aunt hated her. She felt she would never obtain forgiveness from her mother's sister. She slowly got up from the dinner table and put her dishes in the sink. She then went to her room. She laid down on her bed and silently cried. Looking over at the picture on her night stand she smiled a bit. The picture was just taken a few weeks ago. When her family were at the beach. She looked so happy in the picture. Oh! Serena wished she could obtain that happiness again. NO! Serena slammed the picture face down on the stand. "I don't deserve happiness. I let Brittany die. I deserve to suffer!" Serena said and cried into her pillow. She cried like she never cried before. She cried for her aunt, her uncle, her cousin, and parents. She cried and the tears didn't stop coming. They didn't stop until she finally fell asleep. ~~~~~~~~~~ There is part 1! The ending of the new Love Series between Serena and Darien. So tell me! How did you like it! Send me feed back!
