Edgar Allen Poe
the true American icon
For those who disagree with my statement, look at America today and the topics which Poe addresses in countless poems and stories and plays. Ok, maybe America isn't as morbid at some times (perhaps it is) or maybe America isn't pining over the death of its incestual lover (anyone thinking Alabama?? haa jjk), but the way at which he approaches many things like love, power, fear, laziness, and religion reminds me of America today. In any case, whether you side or not, he is still an interesting person and also a unique writer, one of America's finest. Amazingly enough, he began as a humor writer, but at the expense of anothers criticism he began to take a darker view of life. Following one tragedy after another, his career winded down as a demented and unrecognized poet, though today he is known as the father of science fiction and America's best poet/short story writer.
