Less Salt

It was the day aunt died

Women with moist eyes
men on roadside benches
discussing
cement rice cinema
politics kerosene
gossiping on all other subjects
except aunt

Aunt's sons
hastened to lift the bier
made of bamboo
purchased out of the money
found inside her handbag---
ripped open

In the windows of the lane
jostling faces, reflecting
flashes of memory
of their dead relatives
and an expression
to dig out the old corpses
to bury the aunt ----
there

The uppuma got cooked
before aunt's body
was burnt to ashes
To all the visitors
the salt in it appeared less
To me
the salt seemed to be too much
