I   Back  I

A. Rajaram Brammarajan

First And The Last Line

Here it is
my first line
I smelt of green tea leaves
Among the reeds, on the sandy banks
the second crawls and surfaces as small snakes.
Look
the third
Having lost myself in the great graveyard
reclaim I in a blind beggar's
tin metal voiced song.
Ascending
and descending
breath plays hide and seek.
Slipping a foot,
startling in the puddle
Awakening
Poetry is no dream
but
pure sleep in
the first layer.

Translated by the poet
