So you have done all your homework and decided on a puppy. Your first instincts is to grab the newspaper and turn to the pet ads or to look on the internet at pet ads, STOP and think. Dont always stop at the first litter that you see, try to look at a few litters to get an idea. Always keep away from puppy farms, these are where dogs are bred continuously for puppies. These puppy farms will tend to have several breeds and lots of puppies. Lots of puppies mean that they dont all get the care and attention that they need and not always carefuly looked after. Generaly these puppy farms or puppy mills are in appauling conditions again leading to unhealthy pups and dogs. Not advisable at all, keep away from them by all means. Pet shops are all over the places and becareful here too. Not all petshops are bad but in general most of them cage little puppies all day, no water or food available and no time for them to potty. These puppies may have been there for days or even weeks. Puppies from here may have well came from back yard breeders. Backyard breeders are people who have a nice bitch and a nice dog who put them together and bred. Its not just appearances of the dogs that make them the perfect dogs its health and temperment that needs to be thought of. I once met an owner of a dobermann who bought from a BYB and had the most healthiest dobe who is 14 at the moment and its old age thats slowing it down! BYB are usualy people who advertise around on the internet and in newspapers. Professional breeders are usualy into showing and these are the real doggie people that can help you out. There are the good and bad breeders, i once knew a rough collie breeder who had crufts championships and bred and bred but sadly her dogs were kept in the most appauling conditions and even sader the dogs did not even know how to play with a ball!! Do your homework on breeders, speak to people who have had experiences with certain breeders. Most of them are excellent and helpful. Breeders will know the backgrounds of the dogs and can tell you how many championships gt grandma or gt grandpa won. These pups will be well looked after and almost perfect in health and usualy expensive. But at times the perfect show pup may not always be found. I once knew somebody who imported a pup from the other side of the world, the pup had an excellent background and health and alot of Big money was spent on importing, quaranteen and all that, as the pup grew up it turned out not to have any show quality at all and the dreams of showing that dog were shattered!!!! If you want a puppy look around, talk to different breeders, ask around at your vet, vets can help as they have knowledge of the pups mothers background and can always put you in touch with litters and even help you in finding a good puppy for you. Never rush at the first puppy you see, take yourtime and be patient, you will find your perfect companion!!!!! |
