"Dr. Nicolaescu" Hospital
The
Hospital
"Dr. Nicolaescu" Hospital
in Tutova, Romania is a small, rural hospital for its town's people. It has
several buildings, including a main building, failure-to-thrive unit and a farm
that supplies food for its patients. We worked in the failure-to-thrive unit
with the babies. There are currently 26 babies living there. Babies are brought
to the hospital when their families cannot provide for their needs, and the
babies are suffering. The hospital must provide for each child for at least 2
years. Many of these babies are orphans. Those who have families generally come
from very impoverished backgrounds. We were told that many rural families have
many children and little income($100-$200/month). Thus, they have trouble feeding
everyone. When the mother becomes pregnant again, she doesn't get enough
to eat, and her breast milk decreases to where there isn't enough to nourish her
child. This is often the reason that children are brought to this hospital.
