This forest in the picture does not contain kauri as this website is named after, but is of podocarp and beech. I was watching a kereru fly between perches on different trees. I couldn't figure out if it was foraging for food or just keeping active. Indeed, it is pretty ambiguous as to make such a distinction and I don't think the pigeon would care. This was on the southern track to Fox Glacier, and during the drive to the track, the journey passes through more pure stands of silver beech. Going through these more pure stands helped highlight various types of graduations in forms and features across South and North Island forests that I could notice more clearly afterwards when I got among the podocarps in this photo. The memory of getting a small taste of Gondwana sure will always help me when I'm stuck away in my study at a computer! The trip was made possible by having Mum, Dad and my cousins provide the company, finance and logistics.
