In May of 2007 we packed up our gear and headed off into the wild blue yonder and landed in Flagstaff, Arizona. Flagstaff is a college town filled with about 50,000 residents which is the same amount of people estimated to live on the entire island of Kauai it is at an elevation of about 7,000 feet and about a 2.5 hour drive from Phoenix. They get snow here. Did I mention they get ALOT of snow just this past weekend we had at least 6 inches over two days. Had to dig the truck out from under all of the snow. Frozen shut (makes sense to me now) the doors have been frozen shut to the truck and I had to climb in through the drivers side once. This week the high is suppose to be in the 50s and the lows in the 20s. Everyone says not to think that the cold is done March is suppose to be the snowiest??? (snowfilled) month this is a false spring...so I won't hold my breath.
On Sunday, Feb 24 we went down to Firebird International Raceway and we were able to watch the NHRA's drag racing finals. IT WAS AWESOME - THE EARTH MOVED - I can still smell the nitro! Then came home and decided to watch the drag races on tv in an effort to see if we showed up anywhere in the background but it isn't the same as being there and in the first five minutes I didn't see us. I could see the bleacher section that we were sitting in. We were in the pit area when a couple of racing teams were doing their warm ups even with the ear muffs on it was still loud and the nitro fumes made my eyes water but it was still fun! We had seats at the half track and I think those were the best seats in the house because by then the throttles are up and the cars are flying. Of course my camera wasn't quite at the same speed so I got alot of pictures of the wall long after the car had passed but it was still exciting.
The links that are listed below are down there because I used to work at the National Tropical Botanical Gardens Visitor Center (check out the gift shop online they ship!) Peter is an avid sailor and used to sail on the catamaran "Malihini" owned by Doug & Sharon Gibson - he would participate in the different races that the Nawiliwili Yacht Club would present. The Garden Island Newspaper - so everyone can keep up with what's happening on Kauai. Yahoo because I have this website and I use their email. Big Fish Games has replaced Pogo since we have moved to Arizona. |
