| Welcome to my website, www.kauaihawaiiart.com. I was born and raised on the island of Kauai, and feel blessed and humbled by the awesome power and magic of my island home, Kauai. After living in Denmark for almost 2 years, I have come back in the last three years, to raise my son on this land. The Hawaiians call this land "Aina". One of my greatest aspirations is to give back to the youth of the "Aina", or "Keiki O Ka Aina" by doing mural projects in the community. I call it SMART Project: Students Making ART. In this age where the modern world is encroaching upon the last of the wilderness areas of this planet earth, it is important that we not only preserve and immortalize these landscapes but also, nurture our greatest resource, our children. Drugs, Teen pregnancies, and petty crime, are all of the things that have plagued the children of Kauai, and yet they have the beaches, the wonderful forests to hike in, clean air and one of the most nurturing communities in the world. In the last few years we have gone from an agricultural based economy to a tourist based economy and all of the problems that plague the newcomers and visitors with their multi-million dollar homes and bank accounts, are changing the face of this tiny island. When I grew up, we had Aunties and Uncles, and the whole community taking care of you, and it still is that way. We had good clean fun, and all the races got along, simply by making fun of ourselves, and each other. Kauai is a model for the rest of the world. Preserving this delicate and wonderful ecosystem we have here, and respecting the ways of the past, are things I am into. When you purchase a Giclee or postcards from my website, 20% of the profits go to SMART project, Kauai. The next project we will be working on involves The Storybook Theatre of Hawaii. My group of youth and I are going to paint the Island reefs on a mobile puppet exhibit that shows children and visitors alike how the reefs on Kauai are living breathing organisms and full of life with coral, eels, shells and seaweed. Mark Jeffers the Executive Director, has been airing The Russell the Rooster Show for many years now on the island. Our successful pilot project in Kapaa, started with a donation of $200.00 and all you can eat vegan vegetarian cuisine at the Blossoming Lotus Caf and Restaurant. We painted a wall mural. Kealoha Figaro, age 18 was the oldest, he painted the Kokee landscape in the background. Michelle Kato, age 11, painted a huge Winged dragon (she turned 12 that summer). Ave Finch, also 11, turning 12, painted a mermaid, and her stepsister Katrina Perry age 17 who was visiting from the mainland painted a beautiful red Winged Dragon. All I did was paint the waves in the water and the sky background and basically acted as a facilitator for these youth. We got some donations from the community of latex house paint that they were throwing out and just did it. We hope to find more walls and businesses that are willing to give back to the community and our youth. I urge the children to talk to their parents and grandparents and write down the stories of their ancestry. They are the living treasures, and their stories and background are the things that make us proud we live on Kauai. We thank you for visiting our website and remember when you see your children, give them a hug, when you see some trash on the land pick it up and care for our planet for it is our home. The Hawaii State motto is "The Life of the Land is Perpetuated in Righteousness". |
