Vaastushastra is sciences that deal with the same fact of life, that is the harmony prevailing in the atmosphere. Vaastushastra deals with basically five elements of nature, namely, earth, water, fire, wind and space. On the other hand Feng Shui gives importance to fire, water, wood, gold, and earth, with wind being the special property achievable by these elements.
In Vaastu the plots are divided into eight sectors taking into consideration the directions, whether it is straight or diagonal. These sectors help us to design the house.
According to vaastushastra each direction has its own importance and individual effect on human beings : East belongs to 'Lord Indra'. He blesses with prosperity and happiness. South belongs to 'Lord Yama'. He is the god of justice and death. West belongs to 'Lord Varuna' who is the god of rain and water. North belongs to 'Lord Kuber', whose blessings give wealth and prosperity.
The main points to be kept in minds are
1. The building should be built in open space on all sites.
2. More open space should be left on north side of the plot & less on the South.
3. Balconies should be towards East or north. 8. More window openings should be towards East & North.
4. Less window openings should be towards West & South side.
5. Doors & openings should be more towards north & East side.
6. Doors should be less in number towards West or South.
7. Gate should be on the Northeast direction, depending upon the road whether it is North or East.
8. For South road facing house, the gate should be in the South or Southeast not on the Southwest.
Treasury & strong room: Wealth & cash should be stored in the North. The person should face towards North when storing or retrieving cash.
Puja room: The puja room should be located in the Northeast. Alternatively, it can be located in the North or East. While worshipping, the person should face the East. Idols should not exceed 6 inches in height. One should not sleep in puja room. This direction is ideal for water storage. Thus underground water tanks, filter should be kept in this direction.
Bathroom: The bathroom should ideally be located in the East. Alternatively, it can be located in the Northeast. But bathroom should never be located in Northeast. Washbasin etc. should be mounted on the Eastern wall of the bathroom. Geyser should be installed in the Southeast corner.
Kitchen: Ideally kitchen should be towards Southeast, the direction of the God of Fire. Alternatively, it can be in the Northwest. Cook should face the East or North. All items pertaining to fire should be installed in the Southeast corner. The main switch, generators etc. should be located in the Southeast corner of the house.
Bedroom: The main bedroom should be located in South. If the bedroom were in the North, there would be unrest in the family. The bed should be placed in such a way that while sleeping, the head is towards the South. Alternatively, the head can face towards the West. One should never sleep with legs towards the south. The intimates should not take meals in the bedroom otherwise they will suffer bad health, especially while they sit on the bed while eating. Divine idols should not be kept in the bedroom. Jewellery, heavy equipment should be kept facing the south. It results increase in wealth. All heavy equipments should be kept facing the South. It results
