| On Tuesday June 22 2004 a group of 12 pupils from my school went off the Brecon in Wales for 4 days, and I was one of them. We were all packed into a rather cramped minibus, and our luggage went on top, even Claire's huge bag fitted! We then had a many hour journey ahead of us, though we found many a interesting way to amuse ourselves. Day 1 - Arrival and Big Pit After a rather long journey to Wales we finally stopped off at a disused coal mine called 'Big Pit', which has been turned into a museum. We had a hypothesis to answer, which was 'Tourism provides a good way to replace coal-mining jobs'(Read my essay disproving the hypothesis here). We were taken down into the mines to see what it was like, and it was kinda scary at first, but after a while we got used to it, and found it funny that we were underground, and Weezle and me decided we wanted to live down there. Afterwards we looked in the museum and learnt some stuff about the mines and when they got closed down, at looked at people's points of views, the kind of stuff you do in geography these days, especially when your teacher tries to make you think all politically because she knows you are interested in politics. We then went and drove on to the house where we were staying, it was nice, fun because we were staying in a room with 6 of us, in my room was Beckoi, Charloom, Claire, Shannom and Weezle. We were out into groups of who did what, and my group had to cook. All I did was stir soup and pasta, not too strenuous. The foos was really nic,e nicer than we'd expected anyway, we even had a nice pudding of strawberries and icecream with crushed up maltesers on top. YUM! Day 2 - Caving and wading and Hendryyd falls We went caving, woo! I went in a cave!! We fitted through gaps that I thought I'd never fit through, but I did! It was really wet, well, obviously because it was a cave, and it was really fun!! I wanna do it again some day. After that we went to a place where there were rivers and we had to collect data from them, such as the depth and how fast it's current was. Our hypothesis was 'Rivers change the shape of their channel from source to mouth' and 'Rivers change their speed from source to mouth' (You can read my essay here). We collected 2 sets of data, and on the second lot I had to, well, wanted to, wade across the river and got my socks wet because the river was deeper than my wellies. *Shakes thist*. But oh well, it was fun anyway! After dinner we went to Hendryyd falls (See picture to the left) and stood behind a waterfall, it was fun, though maybe a bit scary getting across to it walking along a small ledge of slippery rock. We got a bit wet, also tired because it's in a gorge, and we had to walk all the way down it and all the way back up a really steep hill. Anyway, it was an experience, someting I doubt I'll ever do again, in fact the whole day was, with the caving and river wading and such. Day 3 - Shops and canooing We went into Brecon today to do fieldwork and canooing. We had to wander round Brecon for an hour to collect evidence to try and proove or disprove the hypothesis 'Brecon is a tourist town rather than for local people' (You can see my essay here). We had to go around in groups asking people questions, doing surveys and noting down anything relevant. We got to do shopping at the same time, so it wasn't so bad! Whilst one group were doing the shops survey, the other were canooing, and beckoi and Sannom fell in the water!! Later on we sat on the side of the canal attracting ducks (See picture to the right) by throwing stones into the water. We are so easily amused. When Channelle was canooing she hurt her ankle, so we had a short stop at the hospital on the way back to the house, then watched the football on TV after dinner, which severely excited Leah (she's a big football fan, you see). However, we don't particularly like football, so we went across the road and ran around in the field for a while, trying to make crop circles, alas, it didn't work, so we howled at sheep instead, to be baaaed at back. It was funny. We didn't get much sleep that night, as it was our last night. Day 4 - Going home We went home after being crammed back into the minibus rather elaborately, around Claire's big hefty bag. We got back to school just after the end of the school day, collected out stuff and went off home to share our stories to others. We were all rather distraught and missed our friends, so Weez and Beckoi and Charloi and Claire and me plan to walk to Wales one day to visit the sheep! Nakey sheep! (-Channelle). |
