Katy Hertell - Ceramic Artist

Katy Hertell, Ceramic Artist, b. 1941 Helsinki, Finland

After twenty years of work as a translator in a bank, I finally had enough and resigned. I always thought that I wanted to do something with my hands instead.
In the 80s I participated in several different art courses and eventually, in the beginning of the 90s I obtained my first studio. At first I used time testing different materials like wood, stone, siporex (light weight aerated concrete) and solid concrete. As a resuIt I finally found my material, the ceramic clay. Since then I have been exclusively working with ceramics. I found the material and the technique to suit perfectly with my personality.
My motifs usually emerge from Indian mythology, from where also the ape and the elephant appeared to me. On my first exhibition in Gallery Hagelstam in Helsinki I exhibited only apes made of concrete. Later on the apes have got company of many other animals.
In children and animals I see innocense, wisdom and spontaneity. Things that we adults often have lost and that we need to awaken again in order to grow spiritually.
