In the beginning, all the roses in the world were located on the stars. These stars used to be red. Now they�re white, though, because long, long ago in 1865, there was a bloody battle that tore a country apart. Some call it mutiny, some: the war between the states. �Most everybody knows of it as the Civil War, though.
Now back in these �ere times was an old woman. Her name was Mrs. Maryjo Whipporphil, but everybody called her Crowjo because her garden was always safe from those harmful crows. Anyways, her husband up �n� left to go join them confederates.
Now, ol� Crowjo really missed her husband and prayed about him every night just as her friends were prayin� for their husbands. Now, as it was, all the wives were a prayin� for their husbands, even them ol� Northern ladies. As it turned, those red stars started shootin� out red roses. Every time a woman prayed for her husband, a star would turn white as pure lace and its redness would go to a rose out on the field. And if it happened that this rose hit a man while falling, he�d be cured. Now that�s why some of these men were healed.
But, don�t you tell a soul �cause only the twinkling lights in the sky and the twinklin� eyes of the womenfolk knows this and if you�se go �n� ask someone real old, the secret might slip out!
