Thomas and Elizabeth Taylor can be traced in various Smyth Co census from 1840.  They  were in the 1860 owning real estate valued at $500.  Children listed were  Mary, Jacob, Susan, and Elizabeth.  They were listed as family and dwelling number 337.  Bazil and Elizabeth Talbert and family were the next entry, family/dwelling number  next to 338.  Thomas was not in the 1870 census; it is concluded he died after 1868 as supported by  of the deed cited below.

 4.  Charles W.2 Taylor (Thomas1) was born May 19, 1822 in Russell Co, Virginia, and died Apr 21, 1864 in Saltville, Smyth Co, VA.  He married Ann Eliza Harper, daughter of John Harper and Catherine Harper.

Source:  Steve Taylor, St. Albans, WV.  On Apr 20, 1996 I sent a letter to Loretta Hodgson, Editor of the Saltville Progress, in Saltville requesting information on Charles and his bothers Robert M. and John R. The letter was published, and I received calls from two people in the area who were descendants of Hamilton,  a son  of Robert M.  The first call was from Virgina Talbert of Marion, 540 783-2290.  The second was from Minnie Minton of Saltville (540 496-5507).  Her mother is Mrs. Pauley (540-496-4578).

On May 16, 1966, I met Jerry in Saltville, and met Minnie Minton.  She lives off Sate Route 633, East of Saltville on the road that turns left at McCready Church.  Minnie's mother (Lucy)  lives on the former home site of Robert Muncy Taylor.  About a mile from Robert's place is where Charles and Eliza lived, up in a hollow on hillside farm property.   Robert L. Pauley, Minnie's brother, lives on the farm once owned by Charles.  We were shown the site where the house originally stood.  All that remains was a stone that was from the foundation or chimney.  According to Lucy Pauley (Minnie's mother), her family got Robert's property through a tax sale in the late 1800s from the Wythe County Court.  We were also taken to what is believed the burial site of Charles and an unknown child.  The grave site was situated on a farm adjacent to Charles's farm, property now owned by Myrtle Talbert, Rt 2, Box 193, Saltville, VA. (540-496-7478), Minnie's aunt.  Mrs. Talbert was married to Lucy Pauley's brother.  Myrtle lives on St Route 613 (turn left at McCready's church) about two miles from the church.

July 4, 1996.  Barbara and I took a grave stone I had made for Charles and visited Myrtle who was very gracious and told us to visit the site at any time.  We were having a picnic lunch with Jade before Placing the stone when Myrtle's nephew drove up and said we were not at the right site.  The grave was under a tree down the valley about 150 feet away.  I don't remember his name, but he appeared to be about 65 years old, and said he can remember the site well from the time he was a child.  He also stated there were three graves and stones were still present.  He walked down with me, and sure enough, a stone was there  between the three roots.  I also found two additional rocks.  I buried the marker at ground level, replaced some artificial arrangements, Jerry and I took on May 16 and took photographs of the site.  Mr. Talbert asked me to visit his 90 year old father who lives near Myrtle.  Old Mr. Talbert said he was at the right site, and he stated there had been a fence around the graves many years ago.  He also

July 15, 1995.  According to Wilda Dean Spicer (Faye Raines' daughter) Leander told her as a Young woman that Charles served in a Confederate Regiment during the Civil War.  He was against slavery and was a coffin maker for the military.  He came in contact with smallpox and died before the war ended.  Wilda Dean also stated Eliza was the first cousin of Charles and may have attributed to medical problems of Franklin.

Car Taylor (JP's son) said Leander went to the home site in Virginia with Henry, Otho, and other family members and saw the graved where Charles was buried.  He also stated the fire-place chimney was still standing.  This must have been in the early 1940s because Leander died in October 1948.  His only other Remembrance was the home was on a hillside and Charles was buried on the same property.  There was a tombstone, and he believes there was an inscription on it.

July 31, 1995.  Rand and I went to Russell County courthouse in Lebanon, VA and found no trace of ancestors.  All records prior to 1853 were destroyed by fire.  Also, went to Washington Co Courthouse in Abington and found no records or births of any of Charles and Eliza's children (note- Saltville area was once included in Washington Co) or real estate ownership.  Went to Smyth Co courthouse in Marion and found no records of any kind including information on possible brothers, John R. Taylor or Robert M. Taylor.  We found some information on Charles' military at public library in Marion.

 Taylor, Charles W., Company K, 63rd Virginia Infantry.  Enlisted April 1, 1862 at Marion.  Due  $50 bounty.  Detailed to repair wagons May 29, 1863 at Saltville.  Never rejoined regiment.   Died of disease April 21, 1864.

We also went to possible original home site of Taylor's in Smyth Co, at Broadford, approximately eight miles out of Saltville on Route 91.  The property is across the Holston River by way of a wooden bridge that was constructed for wagons.  It has areas of black top showing.  The house is located up the driveway and slightly to the left.  There is a carriage road around the house that completes a circle back to the wooden bridge.  It appears the house has been abandoned for years and is in bad condition.  It is a large two-story structure with several fireplaces located throughout.  We entered in the kitchen area and noticed servants stairs to the left off the kitchen.  There was a very old wood buring cook stove still in the kitchen.  The house had high ceilings, probably ten feed.  there was a wooden staircase to the second floor where bedrooms are located.  The house was badly vandalized and had graffiti painted on nearly all walls.  The parlor and dining room were very large and had fireplaces in each.  The house could probably be saved due to its overall structural condition, but at a tremendous expense.  It was a magnificent home in its day.  The property lays along the river and is gently Rolling.  There are few trees remaining in the fields except to tall wild cherry trees growing to the right of the house approximately 300 feet away where we found an overgrown graveyard.  We discovered one tombstone approximately 30 inches tall and 24 inches wide with all traces of information worn off.  In talking with a neighbor (first house on right going back to Saltville), there are additional graves there with readable information that are now overgrown with weeds.  The neighbor told me the property is now owned by Attorney named Robert Slaughter who he believes is in the Abingdon or Bristol Va area.  I could find no phone listing in either town.

I believe this may be the large 1300 to 1700 acre farm that has been described to heirs of Charles and Eliza.  A possible explanation for no records or real estate ownership is that Charles and bothers may have lived three free to assist their father in taking care of such a large estate.  The neighbor also told us he heard the farm was given to the former slaves of the farm at the time of the owner's death in the mid 1860's and was subsequently sold.

COMMENT of Ronald L. Taylor, 10828 Monticello Drive, Great Falls, Va:    I suspect the homeplace Stephen described above may be that  of Charles C. Taylor, a wealthy Smyth County farmer, who in the 1860 Smyth Co census had  real estate  net worth of $70,000 and  property valued at $10,000.  In the same census, our Thomas Taylor's estate was valued at $500 while Charles W. Taylor's real estate was valued at $300 and his personal property was valued at $200.  The Thomas Taylor family does not appear to have been a wealthy family.

Taylor, St. Albans, WV:  Dec 26, 1996.  Made trip to Roane County Courthouse in Spencer and found marriage records of Martha.  Parents are shown as father deceased and mother, Eliza.  Records show Martha born in Smyth Co, Va, and age 19 at time of marriage.  Robert was born in South Carolina and was 22 at the time of marriage.  His parents were Edwin and Sara Tawney.  I checked for birth and death records through late 1950's and found no records.  Also checked 1970 and 1880 census for Roane, Jackson, Kanawah, Putnam, and Mason Counties, WV; no records.  I am left to assume that both moved back to South Carolina or perhaps to the Saltville area.  It is interesting to note that Martha and her mother were married by the same minister, John Hively.  Eliza was married on Nov 6, 1866

July 1, 1995:  Source:  Steven Taylor, St. Albans, WV:  Leander and Ida Mae are buried at Shadydale U.B. church cemetery, Roane, Co. WV.  Leander and his wife lived with Roy and Cora Whited at the time of their deaths.  Roy lived on Johnson Creek in the Walton area.  Lee died of chronic myocarditis and Ida died of lung cancer.  I talked with Roy Whited's son earl who still lives on Johnson Creek.  and he told me his sister (Virgie Whited) or daughter Janet Hughes may have photographs of Lee and Ida.

7-14-95:  Talked with Janet Hughes 926-6195 who stated all photographs her mother had were destroyed in a house fire.  At the time of 1920 census, Faye Raines lived with Leander and Ida, Faye's daughter.

On July 8, 1995, Elva Gannon went to White Pines Church Cemetery in Jackson County with me and continued on the road trying to locate the hoe of Leander.  We came upon the former farm of Marsh Casto.  the fellow living there gave us directions to the general area where the old Taylor farm was located.  After walking through weeds over our head for approximately one-half mile, we located an old two-story farm house, long ago abandoned, that was nearly fallen to the ground.  Across from this house was another hollow with a creek that was impassable.  Elva and I walked out of the area through Beech Fork Creek.  According to Junior Cummings who lives in a former one-room school near Jim Whited's old house, we were very near Leander's house, which he said is still standing and solid.  He ask us to come back on a Sunday and he will show us the way to get there by going out the end of Belgrove road and turning right, go to the brick house approximately one mile and turn right.  He said it was nearly a one-mile walk to the house.  He also said it was possible to get into the area of Bill Taylor's old store by taking White Pine Road which is the first right before Cemetery Road.  Barbara and I went there on July 7, 1995.  We drove approximately four miles on the dirt road, crossed the creek, and the area opened into wide bottoms that looked like former farm country.  We drove to an old farm that someone was living in, but did not approach it because of no trespassing signs.  We were within one mile of the old store location

Frank Taylor was subject to "fits" which was probably epilepsy.  It is believed Frank's medical problems were the result of Charles and Eliza being first cousins when married.

 5.  Robert Marion2 Taylor (Thomas1) was born in Smyth Co, Va.  He married (1) Lucinda Catherine Gaulding Jul 29, 1846 in Rich Valley, Smyth Co, Va, daughter of John Gaulding and Mary.

Notes for Robert Marion Taylor:
The 1870 Smyth County Census listed Robert M. Taylor, 45,  a worker in a plaster mine, and lived at Rich Valley township.  He was an intelligent man, skilled in herbal doctoring.

Janet & Watha Lambert, 6005 West Indianoa Avenue, Phoenix, AZ 85033-4136 have done extensive research tracing the Taylor family.  Janet is the daughter of LaSanders Taylor.   "Janet seems to have proven, by Smyth Co deeds and by the statements of Laurie Taylor Martin of Saltville, that Thomas Taylor is the father of Robert M. Taylor.  The Thomas Taylor land is identified by this deed, dated 23 Nov 1868.  Charles J. Cummings and wife Eliza, and Charles S. Bekem, convey to Mary E. Taylor, but reserving the right to have a road, the 200 acres in Poor Valley which they sold to Thomas Taylor; but, who died without assets before he fully paid for the land.  Mary E. Taylor (wife of Thomas Taylor) made no further payment, although the greater part of the selling price was unpaid.  Unless the grantor now needed the road rights, the land seems to have been a gift to Mary.

     This deed connects Robert M. Taylor with the above land:  24 Jan 1988, Robert M. Taylor and wife Catherine, for $150.00, sell to William Caldwell, the 200 acres in Poor Valley "formerly owned by Thomas Taylor, deceased."  It is not clear from the deed if Robert M. Taylor owned the 200 acres by himself, or if he was selling his interest only, and others might have had interest in the land also.
     Apparently, Robert M. Taylor did not own the entire interest in the Thomas Taylor tract, for a month later, he bought his sister's share:  27 Feb 1988, M. T. Burgess and Martha A., his wife, for $35.00 sell to Robert M. Taylor their "undivided interest In a certain tract or parcel of land lying in Poor Valley, containing two hundred acres, more or less, it being the tract of land owned by Thomas Taylor, deceased."
     Robert M. Taylor's sister, Mary, who married a Swiney (written with a dotted "i" in the deed, but indexed as Sweeney) sold her share in the land to Thomas Taylor to Hamel S. Taylor about two months later:  1 May 1888, William Swiney and his wife Mary, sell Hamel S. Taylor, for $25.00, their entire interest in "the land purchased by Thomas Taylor from Become and Cummings."   Hamel S. Taylor is a nephew to Mary and is the son of Robert M. Taylor
     In 1906, Robert M. Taylor, sold his interest in the 200 acres, bought 18 years earlier from Mitchell T.  Burgess and wife Martha.  Robert M. Taylor sells (to his sons) R. T. Taylor and Sanders Taylor for $25.00 "one undivided interest in a certain tract of land lying in Poor Valley, Smyth County, Va. known as the Thomas Taylor land being that interest conveyed to the party of the first part by Mitchell T. Burgess and Martha A., his wife, by deed dated Feb 27, 1888."
     In 1912, Robert T. Taylor and his son Sanders sold the interest they bought from Robert M (and two other tracts of land).  On 25 Jan 1912, R. T. Taylor and Mary N. Taylor, his wife, and Sanders M. Taylor for $600, three separate tracts of land:  "Tract No One known as the Thomas Taylor land, but now known as the Mary E. Taylor Land (this sounds like Mary is still living) containing 25 acres being that part interest conveyed first to R. M. Taylor by Mitchell T. Burgess and Mattie A., his wife, by deed dated Feb 22, 1988, thereafter conveyed to party of the first part by R. M. Taylor by deed dated Feb 13, 1906.  Track 2 that conveyed to Sanders Taylor by B.F. Allison and wife N.C. by deed made 24 Dec 1907.  Tract 3 containing 29 acres, being a state land grant conveyed to R. T. Taylor by deed July 23, 1906 beginning "on South side of Flat Top Mountain corner to the Mary E. Taylor land."

Vail, Ripley, WV.  Physician was George W. Simmons.  Witness at time of death:  Augustus G. Taylor

8-19-95:  found Rachael's grave in Mount Olive Cemetery with no indication her husband was buried there.  She was the only Anderson.  The grave has a flat marker and is located about 30 feet to the left after going through the gate.  The cemetery is enclosed with a chain link fence.  Directions:  On route 33 between Ripley and Spencer, turn right on Gay road, go about 1/3 mile, cemetery located on left, up the hill.  There is a sign on the bank, "Mount Olive"

7-19-95:  located death information on Augustus and Sarah Taylor.  Both lived at Letart, Cooper District, Mason Co, WV.  Gus died in 1946 of cancer of the face.  the information of Gus' death was from Curtus Anderson.  The undertaker was W.H. Foglesong.  The burial was in Ganderville (Probably Gandeville).  Sara died in 1954 of a cerebral hemorrhage in the Mason Clinic, Point Pleasant.   The Informant was John Taylor.  The undertaker was W.H. Ewing.  Her doctor was Robert S. Seiple.  The death certificate said she was buried at the Brick Church.

Augustus and Sarah Taylor are buried in Gandee Cemetery on a hill on Brett Kee Farm, Harmony, Roane County.  Tombstone reads - DR AUGUSTUS G. TAYLOR.  Sarah is buried along side of Augustus.  Directions:  From the Jackson County side cross new bridge at Harmony (near sign to Mount Herman) Turn right, go approximately one mile, turn left up steep drive, and go through cattle fence, proceed up hill on gravel road until reaching another cattle fence.  Cemetery is right surrounded by chain link fence.

Aug 19, 1995:  Went to Cottageville, talked with Frank Click, who is 72 years old, and remembers Gus well.  He lived near him at Mount Alto, and took him to the store for groceries, and to the liquor store in Point Pleasant.  Frank said he was quite, hard working person, who kept to himself.  He also remembers an Anderson girl living with Gus who was from Letart.  She looked after him in his later years.  I also met Ott Shimms who remembers Gus.  He said after Gus quit driving his truck in the early 1940s, he also took him on personal errands.  I also visited the home site where Gus and Sarah lived.  It is now occupied by a Mr. Click who is 80 years old.  The home is in poor, rundown condition.  He has lived there 20 years and purchased it from the Blackwells who brought it from Gus.

Taylor  was listed in the 1860 Smyth county census at age 4.  He was living in the household with his parents Robert M. and Catherine Taylor, with siblings Sara Ann-13, Charles T.-11, Elizabeth M.-9, Jesse H.-7, and Robert T-2.  He was listed in the 1870 Smyth County Census at age 15 living with his parents, and siblings Jesse-17, Robert-11, Amanda-9, and Jacob-7

Hamilton appears to have fathered twin children (Benjamin and Claddie Ann)  with Isabell Dinsmore.  Another child with Isabelle was born in 1888 and died at the age of two. Apparently  Isabelle left this child on Hamel's doorstep. The birth of this child was not recorded in Smyth County records; however,  the death was recorded:  Official Smyth County Records in Marion, VA show this child to be  Jesse Taylor who  died Dec 1890 at age of 2 from Croup.  He was listed as the  son of Hamil S. and Mary Taylor.  The oldest living child of Hamilton,  daughter Sara, remembers her mother talking of a Stevie that died.  During a conversation with  granddaughter of Claddie Ann Densmore, she stated  she was a Taylor. Claddie was born June 20, 1895.

Notes for Robert T. Taylor:
In 1997 Discussions with Birtha Steele, Omar, W.Va., grandson of Jeff and Amanda Taylor-Gilpin.  Birtha stated that  Robert T. Taylor was married twice.  Mary Catherine Lyles was his first wife. He remarried later in life (perhaps after the death of Mary Catherine)  to a widowed woman named Edna Hodge.  This marriage  is confirmed and recorded in the Logan County, WV Court house marriage records, book 5, page 174:  Married 2-19-1930, 68 years old, born in Va,  lived at Monaville.  She was 64, Born in W.VA., lived at Rossmore.  Parents were listed as Robert M. Taylor and Katherine Galden.  The court house marriage record listing the age of Robert T. as 64 which would make him born in 1862.  This conflicts with Smyth Co census records of 1860 which has him listed as 2-years old at that time.  He was known as "Little Bob".  When he remarried a second time, he moved to Sheridan, Lincon Co, WV, where he eventually died.  He was buried in Johnson City, Tenn; however, prior to burial, his body was brought to Micco for a wake.

Robert T. Taylor's family always claimed Cherokee Indian kinship through Mary Catherine Lyles.  Some have doubted the claim.  The Taylor family claimed compensation with the government, but did not get any money.  the Belvins-Sizemore files in the library at Marion, VA clears up the matter.  To qualify, the claimant had to show descent from one on the Cherokee census of 1835, 1848, or 1851, i.e., the ancestor had to have been a citizen of the Cherokee Nation with whom the Government had made the Treaty of Echota in 1835.  The claims of Mary Catherine Lyles Taylor, her brothers John and James Lyles, her sons Charles and Sanders Taylor were grouped with the 2000 applications who claimed Indian blood from "Old Ned Sizemore" born Va. about 1725, died in NC about 1780.  Old Ned died some 50 years before the first Cherokee Roll (1835) and no Sizemore appeared on the Rolls.  The Sizemore claims were denied.  Denial, however, does not disprove Indian kinship.  The claims may have been true, but the proof was faulty, or the Indian ancestors may have lived off the Cherokee Reservation and became citizens of Va, NC, Tenn, Ala, or Ga.  Etta Ruth, Granddaughter of Mary Catherine Lyles, and partly raised by her, stated "Mary Catherine was a squaw".  She was Cherokee.  She  had long straight, black hair.  Her hair was so long she would sit on it if she did not pull it aside.  Etta stated that Robert T. met Mary Catherine out in the woods "sitting on a log" while he was hunting.

The following data is from Lorena Epperly-Brown, Holden, WV, daughter of Carrie Taylor-Epperly.  At this time, Lorena was taking care of Carrie in her home as Carrie was 100 years old.  Carrie Taylor-Epperly parents (Jacob Taylor and Lillie Gilpin) died when Carrie  was approximately 8 or 9 years old.  Carrie had a still-born brother, named Jacob,  about two years before she was born.  Carrie did not have any memory of her parents due to their deaths at her early age.  Carrie was an acquaintance of Anderson "Devil Anse" Hatfield, of the  Hatfield family that feuded with the McCoy family in the S. West Virginia and Western Kentucky area.   On one occasion, she had dinner at Anse Hatfield's home, accompanied by her escort Joe Robinson.  Carrie was born at Saltville, VA on Aug 25, 1895.  Her husband, Chester Epperly was born Feb 4, 1895, and died May 30, 1978.  They were married at Wilkinson, WV by Rev M.A. Robinson.
