Chiquitita

I listen to too much music before going to bed. This is a song based on one of Abba's songs, and I did it a while back. Actually, I did a lot of these stories a while back... anyway, back to the important notes. It has shoujo ai in it. Kinda. I’ll warn you anyway.
Lyrics are Red.

~~~~~
Dorothy sat at the desk, her hand slowly swishing the glass in a clockwise direction. Her eyes stared into space, and she smiled unnervingly. She knew that Relena would be along soon- she had told her she wished to speak with her. Like the good puppy Dorothy was, she agreed and smiled, heading straight to her room. Of course, that was all she was. A lap dog. Relena’s pet pooch. Dorothy laughed at the image of herself as a dog, and then slowly took a sip of the red wine. It tasted quite nice, though there was a bitter taste that made her lips curl into a smile. Bitterness hidden in the sweet nectar of the gods, she though. How apt.
Relena entered the room with great flourish, and Dorothy turned her chair to face her.
“You wished to speak with me, Miss Relena?” She asked politely, the smile on her face not quite reaching her eyes.
“Yes. What’s wrong with you Dorothy? Recently… you haven’t been your usual self.” Ah, so she did notice! That was a nice thought, one that Dorothy kept hidden for further reference. She showed no signs of this on her face though, and tilted her head, uncertainly. Her eyes peered at Relena curiously, as if astonished at this idea, and she shook her head slightly.
“Why, whatever do you mean?” Her voice came out slowly, patronizingly, almost mocking. Relena raised an eyebrow, knowing that Dorothy was trying to get her to yell or pursue. She shook her head and sighed.
“Dorothy, don’t try to ignore it. You’ve been quiet. You… you hardly say a word to anyone anymore. It’s as though you’ve been turned into a mute.” Dorothy smirked slightly and shook her head.
“A mute? Why Relena, I’m no more a mute than anyone else. Why would you think that I’ve become a mute?” Relena stared at her, almost uncertain of what she was doing there, why she had decided to have this talk with Dorothy. Dorothy evidently didn’t believe anything was wrong… but then, she never believed anything was wrong. Relena moved over to the window and stared out, composing herself, thinking of her words.
Chiquitita, tell me what's wrong
You're enchained by your own sorrow
In your eyes there is no hope for tomorrow
How I hate to see you like this
There is no way you can deny it
I can see that you're oh so sad, so quiet
“Dorothy, you don’t need to hide behind your mask. I know you better than that. Let me help you, Dorothy.” Dorothy’s hand shook, but Relena didn’t see it, too busy staring into space. Dorothy put the glass down on the desk and shook her head slightly. Oh so caring, Relena, she thought. Tell me your problems. “Dorothy, I’m your friend.” Relena whispered, turning around to see her. Dorothy was still glancing at the desk, thinking. That really cinches the idea, doesn’t it? Relena, the perfect friend. Having been through the problems of the world, it should be easy to believe she was her friend. But it wasn’t. Oh yes, she was kind, caring. Lovely. But that didn’t make Dorothy want to befriend her. It made her want to bed her. Sleep with her. Kiss her. Dorothy smirked slightly at the thought. Oh Miss Relena, I have a problem you could never solve. I am in love with you.
“Dorothy?” Relena moved over to the desk, leaning on it to catch Dorothy’s eyes, as they were staring at the floor, rather than at her.
“Miss Relena, please. You seem to pursue the idea that something is wrong. I assure you. There is nothing wrong. I have no problems, I am perfectly fine. Now please, must we continue this charade of friendship? After all, you are the most important person in the world. Why on earth do you wish to spend your free time, of which you have so little, trying to get me to admit a problem I don’t have?” Dorothy glanced up, slightly shocked at how close Relena was. She hadn’t heard her move from the window, and she took a breath sharply. Relena took this as a sign that she was lying.
“Dorothy, Stop it. Your mask isn’t fooling me. You may be cocky to anyone else, my brother, Noin, but not to me. I know you. You’re covering your distress with a humourless mask of jokes. Please, Dorothy.” Relena reached out to touch her hand, the hand wrapped around the wine glass, “Let me help you.” Dorothy shook her head slightly, trying to deny it. Relena grasped her hand tightly, wrenching it away from the glass, and Dorothy looked up fully. “Let Me Help You.” She repeated, determinedly.
Chiquitita, tell me the truth
I'm a shoulder you can cry on
Your best friend, I'm the one you must rely on
You were always sure of yourself
Now I see you've broken a feather
I hope we can patch it up together
“Miss Relena, please. You’d never understand. It’s … I’m having problems with my love life. I don’t think you really want to know.” Dorothy stuttered, trying to hold the mask in place, however close it was to falling off.  Relena smiled softly, and it crashed. There was no chance that she could resist that smile. It always wore a chip in her façade, but now it had caused the ending crack that broke it in two.
“Why, Dorothy, I didn’t realize you had a love…” Dorothy smirked slightly, oh yeah, of course she didn’t. “… have they broken up with you? Are they causing you pain?” Dorothy shook her head to the first question, then nodded at the second.
“More pain than they’d ever realize. They don’t even know they’re hurting me. You see, I’m in love with someone that would never love me in return.” Dorothy admitted, withholding the vital clue, the fact that it was because they were female, and because they were in love with somebody who would never love them in return. Quite ironic really.
“Dorothy, you’re in love with someone that doesn’t know?” Relena smiled and sat on the edge of the desk, her eyes smiling. “I know how that feels, believe me.” Oh dear, Dorothy thought, she’s going to start talking about Heero. Heero Yuy. Spawn of Satan, as Dorothy had renamed him. She laughed silently. At least she knew that Relena would never get with him. That’d have been the twist of the knife. He was in love with Duo Maxwell, pilot of the Deathscythe. They’d been together for quite a while. Relena was the only one that didn’t know. Or rather, refused to acknowledge it.
“… if only he’d come and talk to me… Dorothy, are you crying?” Dorothy didn’t realize, but she had indeed, started to cry. Not from the pain of loving Relena, she never shed tears over that. But tears of amusement at her loves misconceived ideas. “ Oh Dorothy, oh, it’ll be alright, I’m sure that it’s not that bad…” Relena got up and wrapped her arms around her, shocking Dorothy slightly, but she decided to make the best of it. Relena had merely took the tears as tears of pain, and had joined in. “Dorothy, oh Dorothy, it’ll be alright. You just need to tell them, they’ll love you, I’m sure.”  Relena cried, her tears spilling over Dorothy’s hair, causing Dorothy more tears. Of course she’d never love her in return. Fool. Dorothy’s tears had now, finally, become real tears of pain, though she’d never admit it.
“Miss Relena, please…” Dorothy whispered, her voice adding a slight plead that she was not used to hearing from her own mouth. Relena gasped slightly and shook her head. “Please, stop crying. I can handle it. I just … need time, ok?” She stammered. Relena nodded and moved away. Dorothy scowled inside, hating the loss of the warm arms around her neck.
“Oh Dorothy, I’m sorry. I didn’t realize that I was crying…” Liar, Dorothy thought. You just want to make me feel better. “I’ll do anything, ok, just to make sure… you’re back to your normal self. If it means… letting you be alone, I can understand that. But, Dorothy, I’m always around if you need me.” Relena slowly left the room, Dorothy’s eyes watching her mockingly; almost amused at the fact that Relena had given up so easily. Sighing, she turned back to the desk and took her glass of wine, gulping it down.
Chiquitita, you and I know
How the heartaches come and they go and the scars they're leaving
You'll be dancing once again and the pain will end
You will have no time for grieving
Chiquitita, you and I cry
But the sun is still in the sky and shining above you
Let me hear you sing once more like you did before
Sing a new song, Chiquitita
Try once more like you did before
Sing a new song, Chiquitita
A few more glasses late, or rather, a few bottles later, Dorothy was smiling again. Properly. Miss Relena had given her the best advice! Of course! She should tell the person whom she loved that she loved them. After all, in the end, it didn’t matter, surely? The wine had gone straight to her head, and due to the fact she was upset, her mind was working in the most illogical way. Had she been sober, she’d never have dreamt of telling Relena. However, she wasn’t. She was drunk, and longing to be loved.
She got up and slowly and, with superb accuracy, or rather, drunken accuracy; she walked along to Relena’s bedroom. She knocked on the door gently, and whispered softy. “Miss Relena? Miss Relena? Can I come in and talk to you?” The door opened, and Relena stood, in a flimsy silk nightgown, rubbing her eyes, clutching a brown teddy bear possessively. Her eyes looked red, almost as if she was tired or had been crying, but she smiled at Dorothy. “Hey, Dorothy. Would you like to come in and talk?” Dorothy smirked and nodded. Relena gently shut the door behind her, checking the corridor for the soldiers who were watching out on guard. Dorothy sat on her bed, a small smile on her face. It had hit her that she really couldn’t just blurt out she loved Relena, so she’d opted for telling her that the person she loved was female, to find out her reaction.
“Dorothy?” Relena asked, sitting on her chair, opposite the bed. Dorothy smiled faintly, and whispered, almost afraid to say it aloud. “Miss Relena, the reason I can’t believe my love would ever love me is because she’s female.” Relena’s eyes widened in fear and she shook her head, unbelievingly.
“How could you? Come in here and say something like that? That’s disgusting, Dorothy. The idea of loving someone of the same sex… it’s wrong! Get out! Now!” Relena angrily pointed to the door. Dorothy nodded, feeling let down and wanting to cry. She quickly got up and left, running to her on room. How could she say such harsh things?
When she got into her room, she slammed the door, and collapsed onto the bed.  There was no way in hell she’d get to be with Relena now, if the idea of being in love with someone of the same sex disgusted her. What was the point of even thinking about it? A small voice, in the back of Dorothy’s head laughed and smirked. Her mask was speaking to her, telling her that she knew it’d happen like that, why had she even tried? After all, Relena was in love with Heero, The Perfect Soldier. Only… he wasn’t so perfect, was he? No, he wasn’t. Dorothy felt a small superior smirk appear on her face, through the tears. She got off of her bed, and walked to the bathroom, wiping her face around. She glanced at herself, and realized that really, nothing looked different. Her eyes looked at little red, but that was logical. A few drops of Zi would do. She found the bottle, gently dropped the eyes drops into her eyes and waited. In the few minutes it took for them to work, she thought of the best way to tell Relena. She could tell her in the morning, but no, that wasn’t soon enough. She wanted to hurt her. Now. She blinked and glanced in the mirror, her face smirking.
As she walked along the corridor, she realized that she had suddenly become sober, and laughed. Revenge could be sweet, and it took a lot of concentration. Evidently, she would normally want revenge, but with the alcohol in her system, it made it seem so much more enticing. She banged on Relena’s door importantly, and waited. Again, Relena answered the door clutching her bear and rubbing her eyes. She glared at Dorothy when she appeared.
“What do you want?”
“Why, Miss Relena, I thought I’d better tell you an important piece of information. It might be of great consequence if don’t.” She replied, acting as though it was life threatening. Of course, to her, it was. Dorothy waited, and Relena nodded at her to continue.
“Heero Yuy and Duo Maxwell have been having a relationship. Physically, romantically, for the past few years. They are probably going to get married soon. I just thought you might want to know exactly how Perfect your Perfect soldier is. Like me, he prefers people of the same sex. Maybe you should think about this.” Dorothy smirked sweetly and then turned to leave. Behind her, Relena was shaking her head and denying it.
So the walls came tumbling down
And your love's a blown out candle
All is gone and it seems too hard to handle
Chiquitita, tell me the truth
There is no way you can deny it
I see that you're oh so sad, so quiet
For the next few days, Relena refused to talk to anyone, demanding only the phone as a contact line. Many tears were shed in her room, as were many loud bangs, and quite a few crashes. Dorothy smirked, though it was a pained smirk. Indeed, she had had her revenge, but at what cost? Relena refused adamantly to talk, touch or acknowledge her. Though Dorothy would try to deny it, it hurt quite a lot. Finally, Zechs approached her; asking if she could talk to his little sister, get her to stop acting so childishly. Dorothy smiled at him, nodded, and headed straight to Relena’s room. The door was open, the room was a tip, and on the bed was a large clump of hair. Dorothy stared at it, apprehensively, until it moved. She smiled, realizing it was Relena, but that she was hiding under her quilt. Dorothy sat on the edge of the bed, and bit her lip, uncertain what to say. She gently stroked Relena’s hair, and immediately the quilt moved, and Relena’s head appeared.
“Get lost you freak.” She muttered, unenthusiastically. Dorothy ignored her and continued to stroke her hair, which, she realized, hadn’t been brushed for ages. Sighing, she got up and grabbed Relena’s brush and gently started brushing it. It was something she’d done before, but she’d never allowed herself to enjoy it before. Relena glared at her, but didn’t move away. Dorothy continued to brush, the silence seeming to loom on forever, until Relena started to talk.
“How come you keep coming back? I’ve called you every name under the sun, think you’re a freak, and … I’m scared of you. But you don’t seem to notice it.”  Dorothy smiled and shook her head.
“Oh, Miss Relena, I’ve noticed it. I’ve noticed it more than you could ever realize. But I’m so used to it. It hurts at first, but I don’t hold it against you. If you can’t accept the fact that I love another woman, that’s your problem. It makes it harder to communicate with you, but Miss Relena, I have learnt that in the end, it doesn’t matter.”
Dorothy stopped brushing. “I’m sorry about announcing Heero and Duo’s love like that, but I felt the need to tell you. There was no point allowing you the pain of loving someone you could never have.” Dorothy laughed self mockingly. “Sure, it would’ve been amusing, but I know how it feels, so I’d rather you didn’t have to go through the pain.” Relena turned around to face Dorothy, uncertain of what she was saying.
“Dorothy, What do you mean?” Dorothy put the brush down and smiled slightly.
“Miss Relena, if you don’t understand, there’s no simple way of explaining. I just don’t want you to be hurt, like I am.” Dorothy paused. “ Because, Miss Relena, I know that the person I love will never love me. She” she waited for Relena to flinch, but she didn’t. In fact, she didn’t react at all. “is straight. And she is very important to me. If she gets hurt, then it hurts me. And I don’t want you to get hurt.” Dorothy whispered, her eyes never leaving Relena’s. Relena’s eyes widened slightly and she moved back slightly.
“You love me, don’t you?” Dorothy felt her heart tighten and then nodded slowly, getting up. “I’m sorry Miss Relena. You see, didn’t I tell you that you couldn’t help?”
“Wait! Dorothy, I…” Relena shook her head. “ I won't… I don’t love you. I… would like us to be friend still though. I know, it’ll hurt. And I’m sorry, but I can’t… can’t offer you anything more than that.” Dorothy smiled slightly, and laughed.
Chiquitita, you and I know
How the heartaches come and they go and the scars they're leaving
You'll be dancing once again and the pain will end
You will have no time for grieving
Chiquitita, you and I cry
But the sun is still in the sky and shining above you
Let me hear you sing once more like you did before
Sing a new song, Chiquitita
Try once more like you did before
Sing a new song, Chiquitita
“Oh, Miss Relena, I never expected any more.” Dorothy got up and smirked slightly. “After all, the most important person in the universe could never go out, love or be with a mere maid.” Dorothy smirked, though the smirk didn’t quite reach her eyes. “Miss Relena, your brother is worried about you.” She started, and Relena glanced up. She had been looking at the floor, considering Dorothy’s words.
Try once more like you did before
Sing a new song, Chiquitita
“Which is why I am here, supposedly cheering you up. Miss Relena, let the world see your pretty smile. After all, if your brother is worried, then I expect everyone else is too. We wouldn’t want another war on our hands would we? Especially as it would be the world against the Pilots. I believe the world would loose, and we wouldn’t want that, now, would we?” Dorothy smiled and Relena smiled in return. Dorothy has successfully replaced her mask, she thought, I just hope I can do the same. Dorothy raised an eyebrow and Relena got up, exiting the room, Dorothy following her. Once again, like a lap dog. But this time, Dorothy thought, at least she knows that this lap dog has feelings. Relena smiled at her softly, and reached out to link arms, in a friendly way, with her. Dorothy smiled, moving so she could link arms easily, rather than just following. Maybe she wasn’t just a lap dog. Maybe she was a little more. She’d never know. But she could hope.
