Aaliyah Haughton, died on Saturday, August 25, 2001 at the age of 22 in a plane crash that was leaving Bahamas. She will truly be missed by all. She was a very good artist and I will miss her music. For more information go to e-online.

Prince Rogers Nelson, 7 June 1958, Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA. A prodigiously talented singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and producer, Prince was named after the Prince Roger Trio, of whom his father, John Nelson, was a member. After running away from his mother and stepfather he briefly joined up with John, who bought him his first guitar. He was later adopted by the Andersons, and became a close friend of Andre Anderson (later Andre Cymone). Prince was already conversant with piano and guitar and had written his own material from an early age. Together with Anderson he joined the latter's cousin, Charles Smith, in a junior high school band titled Grand Central. As Prince progressed to high school, Grand Central became Champagne, and he introduced original material into his sets for the first time. His musical development continued with the emergence of 'Uptown', a musical underground scene that included Flyte Time, as well as other important influences including Jellybean Johnson, Terry Lewis and Alexander O'Neal. Prince's first demos were recorded in 1976 with Chris Moon, who gave him guidance in the operation of a music studio, and free reign to experiment at weekends. Moon also introduced him to backer Owen Husney, after which Prince provided interested parties with a superior-quality demo. Husney and his partner Levinson set about a massive 'hyping' campaign, the results of which secured him a long-term, flexible contract with Warner Brothers Records after a great deal of scrambling amongst the majors.

Erykah Wright, 1972, Memphis, Tennessee, USA. Based in Dallas, Texas, Erykah Badu is an uncompromising R&B performer who has made rapid progress in her brief career to date. Signed to Kedar Entertainment, Badu seems to be well on the way to repeating the label's blueprint for success that propelled D'Angelo to international stardom. Her debut album, Baduizm , was largely self-written, and was co-produced with the Roots , D'Angelo collaborator Bob Power and several old friends and colleagues from her days on the Memphis music scene. Among them was her cousin, Free. Before electing to turn solo, Badu had performed alongside Free in the group Erykah Free. The album's contents, which fluctuated between warm jazz textures and hip-hop and soul rhythms, won almost universal critical praise, and Badu found herself on the cover of the UK's Blues & Soul magazine. She also attracted features in magazines as diverse as Vibe, Spin, Time, The Source and Rolling Stone. The album topped the R&B charts and reached number 2 in the Billboard charts. Her profile was raised by a promotional video clip for 'On & On' that was scripted by Badu, and based on the film The Color Purple. A strong live performer, Badu took the unusual step of releasing a concert album only a few months after her debut. Janet Damita Jackson, 16 May 1966, Gary, Indiana, USA. Jackson was the youngest of the nine children in the family that produced the Jackson Five (including Michael Jackson, Jermaine Jackson and LaToya Jackson ). When Janet was four years old, the family moved to the Los Angeles area; three years later she made her performing debut in Las Vegas with her brothers. At the age of nine, she joined them on a television special. She was cast in the US television programmes Good Times from 1977-79 and Diff'rent Strokes from 1981-82. She signed to A&M Records in 1982 and recorded her self-titled debut album, followed by Dream Street in 1984. Both albums sold only moderately, although they each yielded one US Top 10 single. Jackson's breakthrough came in 1986 with Control, which reached number 1 and produced an astonishing five US Top 10 singles and three UK Top 10 singles. The album was ultimately certified quadruple platinum for sales of over four million copies in the USA. Jackson followed up in 1989 with Janet Jackson's Rhythm Nation 1814, another quadruple platinum album, which yielded chart-topping singles such as 'Miss You Much' and 'Rhythm Nation'. Jackson undertook her first concert tour in 1990. By the end of the year she had scooped eight Billboard awards, including Top R&B Albums and Singles Artist, Best Pop and R&B Album Award for Rhythm Nation, and Top Hot 100 Singles Artist. The success of the Rhythm Nation album continued into 1991 when, in January, Jackson became the first artist in history to have culled from one album seven Top 5 singles in the Billboard chart. Jackson's commercial peak continued into the 90s with the unprecedented performance of Janet, which entered the US album chart at number 1, beating brother Michael's sales record by selling 350,000 copies in its first week. The compilation album Design Of A Decade was another huge seller, and followed her collaboration with brother Michael on 'Scream'. Her first studio set in four years, The Velvet Rope, was a deeply personal album which dealt frankly with her much self-publicized emotional breakdown.
