Lana
clutched the green stone close to her heart as she let her mother’s voice
envelope her. She could put it away. For now. She didn’t need it anymore.
The
tape clicked off. She had never felt closer to her mother, not even during her
cemetery visits.
Nell
called, her voice faint. Lana opened the door to the truck as she thought of
her aunt, the rain drenching her instantly. She was little misguided sometimes.
But well-intentioned. Lana realized how lucky she was. She had family. And a
life. She smiled, the first real one in a while.
“Coming,
Nell!”
