THE BEVERLY HEATH FAMILY

Beverly Heath is my mystery man. Very little is known about him, virtually no personal information just small bits and pieces pieced together from various public records in Tennessee and Texas.

According to the Texas Mortality Schedule for Smith County, Texas 1860 he was 56 years old at the time of his death. Which would have placed his birth date circa 1804. It states that he was born in South Carolina and he died from Cong. Fvr.
He first makes his appearance on the enumeration of the 1830 Lincoln County, Tennessee Federal Census Schedule with Elizabeth Hart Eaton and her children. It is assumed that he was the hired man. He next appears as Head of the House on the 1840 Lincoln County, Tennessee Census along with Elizabeth Hart Eaton and her children. I have a marriage date for Beverly Heath and Elizabeth Hart Eaton of January 10, 1829 but it is not confirmed.
Elizabeth Hart Eaton Heath was the daughter of Samuel Lemuel Hart and Mary Beauford Bufford. Joel Calvin Eaton and Elizabeth Hart were married May 20, 1818 in Lincoln County, Tennessee. They had the following children:

1. John Calvin Eaton born April 18, 1819, Mulberry, Lincoln County, Tennessee. Married (1) Betsey (2) Cincinnatta Caroline Melton. Cincinnatta was the sister of my great grandfather, George Washington Melton. (See the Melton Family history on this same webpage. kmo)

2. Nancy Eaton born Mulberry, Lincoln County, Tennessee August 8, 1820. Died September 30, 1855 in Rusk County, Texas. Never married.

3. Samuel Hart Eaton born November 20, 1821 also in Lincoln County. Died September 4, 1842 in Lincoln County, Tennessee. No known marriage.

4. Joel Eaton, Jr. born August 27, 1823 Mulberry Creek, Lincoln County. Died December 22, 1879 in Kaufman County, Texas. Married Nancy Walters September 28, 1852 in Smith County, Texas.

5. George Eaton born February 7, 1825 in Lynchburg, Lincoln County, Tennessee. Died September 14, 1889 in Arp, Smith County, Texas. Married (1) Temperance "Tempy" Ann Cooper January 6, 1848 in Rusk County, Texas. Married (2) Louisa V. "Lou" Jeffries.

6. Alfred Eaton born May 21, 1826 in Lynchburg County, Tennessee. Died March 22, 1885 in Martin's Mill, Van Zandt County, Texas. Married December 12, 1850 Jane "Janey" Cooper.

Beverly Heath moved his family to Rusk County, Texas sometimes after 1840 and before the 1846 Poll Tax. He is shown on the Republic of Texas Poll list for 1846 as paying his poll tax. There are subsequent papers in 1848 from Rusk County appointing George Eaton to act for Beverly and Elizabeth in the matter of selling their land in Tennessee. Later paper work from Smith County, Texas also indicates that he handled the conveying of their land in Smith County after their death.

The Mortality Schedule for Smith County 1860 also indicates that Elizabeth Hart Eaton Heath passed away in February 1860 of the same ailment as Beverly. Elizabeth is buried in Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Rusk County, Texas near the present day New London. Her grave marker indicates that she was born March 18, 1798 and died February 15, 1860. The mortality schedule says she was born in Kentucky. It can be assumed that Beverly was buried next to Elizabeth in Pleasant Hill Cemetery but there is no stone to mark his grave.

This man is a complete mystery to me and I would appreciate any help or guidance to learning of his parentage and if he had siblings. There was a family of Heaths in Rusk County, Texas but I can make no connection to them and my Beverly Heath.

Beverly Heath and Elizabeth Hart Eaton Heath had two daughters:

1. Sarah Jane Heath was born in Tennessee on October 23, 1831. She married George Washington Melton in Rusk County on August 23, 1847. She died in 1860 presumably near Omen in Smith County, Texas. Sarah Jane was my great grandmother and I know nothing about her.

2. Elizabeth L. Heath born April 28, 1833 in Lincoln County, Tennessee. Married (1) William Lowery/Lowry/Lowrie before 1860 place unknown. Presumably Smith County. (2) George Washington Melton February 22, 1962 in Smith County, Texas.

Sarah Jane Heath and George Washington Melton and their five children were found living in Smith County, Texas in 1860 in the Canton Beat. (Omen Community) Living next to them were Sarah Jane's widowed sister, Elizabeth Heath Lowery and her three daughters.

Elizabeth Heath Lowery Melton states on her application for a widow's benefits from George Melton's service in the Mexican War that her sister died in Smith County in 1860. George and Elizabeth had no children together but raised both families together. Both had daughter's named Frances so it can be confusing.

George Washington Melton was born in 1821 in Alabama and died in Rains County, Texas in 1881 and is buried in Pilgrim Rest Cemetery. Elizabeth Heath Lowery Melton died in Rains County on January 29,1895 and is interred next to George.

The children of Sarah Jane Heath and George Washington Melton were:

1. Frances B. Melton born in Texas Jun 29, 1851. Died in Rains County, Texas January 10, 1915. Married (1) Mise Vanderpool (2) Johnny N. Terry.

2. George Washington Melton, Jr. born December 8, 1852 in Rusk County, Texas. Died in 1928 in Rains County, Texas. Married Ida Lee Gee November 28, 1886 in Emory, Rains County, Texas. Both are interred in Pilgrim Rest Cemetery in Rains County.

3. Amanda "Mandy" E. Melton born September 1856 in Rusk County, Texas. Date of death unknown. Married John "Johnny" Calvin Eaton son of John Calvin Eaton and Cincinnatta Melton.

4. Thomas Beverly Melton was born in Rusk County, Texas December 22, 1856 and died in Levelland, Hockley County, Texas February 19, 1946. Burial in Forest Grove Cemetery near Telephone, Fannin County, Texas. Married Nancy Telezine Kelly daughter of David Alexander Kelly and Hira Whitaker January 20, 1889 in Emory, Rains County, Texas. She died May 9, 1913 in Fannin County and is interred in Forest Grove Cemetery also. Thomas Beverly and Nancy were my grandparents. They had a large family consisting of fourteen children.

5. Nancy H. Melton born August 1858 in Texas. Married in 1876 to John Shipley in Rains County, Texas. No death date.

The children of Elizabeth Heath Lowery and William M. Lowery were:

1. Frances Lowery born about 1853. No other information.

2. Elizabeth Lowery born about 1855. No other information.

3. Ellen Lowery born February 1859. Died 1902 in Rains County, Texas. Married H. Doss Adams.
