5 YEARS LATER

"Oh, Jack, I'm going to miss you so much," Joey cried in between kisses. Jack smiled and covered her lips with his.

"I think you'll survive." Joey giggled and they continued to kiss.

Pacey Witter checked his watch to make sure he wouldn't be late. As he walked towards the gate he saw and old friend. The old friend was currently attached to a cute brunette, but he was still recognizable. Pacey stood staring at the couple as he tried to remember his friend's name.

"Jack? Jack McPhee?" The two split abruptly and Jack stared at Pacey for a moment.

"Pacey Witter! Oh, wow. It's been way too long." As they shook hands Pacey's gaze slowly shifted to Joey. She grew uncomfortable and remembered Pacey as "the most obnoxious man on earth."

"Yeah, too long. I'm going to miss my flight if I don't hurry. It was nice to see you again, Jack." They shook hands again.

"Have a nice flight, Pacey," Jack called out to Pacey's retreating form. He faced Joey again as she snorted. "What?"

"I know him. He is such a jerk," she paused. "When I was in college and preparing to be a journalist, I had a friend. What was her name? I can't remember. Anyway, I decided to move to New York, so her boyfriend, who just happens to be your old friend Pacey, came with me. You know he had the nerve to hit on me?"

Jack frowned, but before he could speak Joey continued. "But I was such good friends with her that I refused to sleep with him." Joey laughed. "Don't talk to me, Jack. I'm such a terrible person that I can't even remember a girl's name who I was such good friends with that I wouldn't sleep with her boyfriend!"

"So what happened?"

"What do you mean?"

"After he hit on you." Jack was obviously uneasy with the subject.

"Oh! Well, we got into a big argument and I told him I'd much rather be friends. Then he gave me a speech on how men and women can never be friends. He made me so angry." Jack opened his mouth to speak when Joey cut him off.

"Amanda! Amanda Barrens! That was her name." Jack kissed her quickly.

"You better go or you'll miss your flight." He loved Joey, but sometimes she could really talk up a storm.

"Right, I'll miss you." She kissed his cheek and grabbed her purse. "I'll call you from New York!" Jack waved good-bye as Joey ran towards the gate.

"Bye!"

Pacey stared through the crack between the seats in front of him. Jack's girlfriend looked incredibly familiar. Luckily she was sitting right in front of him giving him three hours to figure out just who she was.

A flight attendant interrupted his thoughts. "Would you like something to drink, sir?"

"Yes, I'll have a coke, please." The woman opened and poured his drink into a small glass filled with ice and moved up to the next row of seats. Finally, she asked Joey what she wanted.

"Do you have bloody mary mix?" Joey asked.

"Yes, we do."

"Good. However, I only want three-fourths of the packet to be in the glass. Give me the rest of it on the side. Also, I'd like a slice of lime, but on the side please." The way she ordered instantly told Pacey who it was. He stood up and looked over her seat.

"Joey, Joey Potter." She turned to look up at him and groaned when she realized who had been calling her. "It's Pacey Witter, in case you forgot."

"How could I?" Pacey turned to the attentive man sitting next to Joey.

"We met a couple of years ago."

"Five years," Joey announced.

"Five years then. Haven't seen or heard from her since. Still just as attractive I see." The man smiled up at him.

"Would you two like to sit together?" he offered. Pacey grinned and grabbed his things.

"Gee, thanks." Joey moaned and covered her face with her hands.

"This is going to be a long flight." Pacey took the seat next to her.

"So how does it go, Jo?"

"It was going fine until I saw you."

"Feisty. How come you didn't say hello in the airport?"

"I was hoping you didn't recognize me."

"Ouch. You and Jack, huh? You're a new couple aren't you?"

"Why do you say that?"

"He took you to the airport. That is a sign that you've just started to go out."

"Oh, really?"

"Yeah. I never take anyone to the airport."

"Why?"

"Because then you get engaged and then married and you stop taking her to the airport. Then she asks, How come you never take me to the airport anymore? Not doing it in the first place eliminates the whole problem."

"You're still a pig I gather."

"You're still a bitch I gather." She glared at him until his face began to annoy her. Joey turned away and Pacey laughed with triumph.

Pacey saw her standing in front of him on the moving sidewalk, arms crossed. He caught up to her with a few strides.

"Do you want to go get lunch?" Joey turned to him, startled.

"Remember what you said the last time we met? Men and women cannot be friends." Pacey frowned.

"Did I say that?"

"Yes, you did."

"That rule doesn't necessarily apply here."

"And why not?"

"Because we are both seeing other people. You're with Jack, I'm engaged. That eliminates the sexual tension in the male/female relationship." Joey sighed.

"Oh, really?"

"Wait," he paused. "I was right the first time. By making a friend of the opposite sex, the significant others feel threatened. They won't understand why you need a friend when you have them. Now the relationship is doomed because the boyfriend or girlfriend thinks that he or she is missing a quality or qualities that their boyfriend or girlfriend has found in another person.

Therefore, men and women cannot be friends." Joey gave him a look that could kill and he smirked. "My mistake."

She began to walk in order to get away from him. "I hope everything works out with Jack."

"The same for you and your fiancee." She picked up speed hoping that he would take the hint and leave her alone. When he didn't she glared at him.

"I'll just stop walking." She nodded and hurried off.

"Imbecile," she muttered.

"I heard that!"
