Joey Potter drove up to the curb in her yellow station wagon. She saw her best friend, Amanda Barrens, making out with her boyfriend. Joey was going to be on an eighteen hour road trip with a man she only know through Amanda.
Joey cleared her throat quietly to try and get their attention. It didn't work. These two were connected by their tongues and off in their own little world. She cleared her throat again, louder this time. They still didn't hear.
"Break it up!" she finally shouted. Amanda and her boyfriend parted from each other slowly. Amanda turned and saw who had so abruptly separated her from her wonderful, handsome boyfriend.
"Joey! Oh, it's so good to see you!" She turned to her boyfriend. "This is Pacey Witter. Pacey, meet my best friend in the whole world, Joey Potter." Joey extended her hand through the car window and Pacey firmly shook it.
"Nice to meet you, Joey." She smiled icily.
"The trunk is open, you can throw your stuff in." Pacey nodded and grabbed two duffel bags and a baseball bat and threw them carelessly into the trunk. Then he slammed it down and turned to Amanda.
He wrapped his arms around her slim waist and stared at her with his beautiful blue eyes. "I'm going to miss you so much." He kissed her lips. "Here's hoping I survive all the way to New York." They kissed again and Joey began to worry how long they were going to take.
The horn blared and the couple broke apart. Joey smiled sheepishly. "Sorry." Pacey stared at her and shook his head. He kissed Amanda one last time before getting into the car with Joey. All three waved good-bye as Joey and Pacey began their trip.
Joey looked at the car's digital clock and then at her watch. "I've estimated that this trip will take about eighteen hours. Now, I took the time to mark the places on the map where we can switch. We can divide the amount of time into three sections of six. You can look at the map and tell me when it's your turn."
Pacey looked at her serious expression and began to laugh. "Whatever. As long as I don't die before I get there." Now it was Joey's turn to stare. "What?" he asked.
"Amanda told me you were morbid, but I wasn't prepared for this."
"You're just jealous." Joey snorted.
"And why would I be jealous of your terrible outlook on life? You spend way too much time thinking about when you're going to go to notice the good things in life."
"My outlook is not terrible, it's rational. When it comes time for me to die, I'll be prepared and you won't. It's that simple." Joey shook her head and tried to think of a comeback, but decided that silence would be her response.
A few hours later they saw signs for a small diner. They had gone this entire time without speaking to one another. Pacey had begun to grow antsy with all the silence. He was one of those people that had to constantly have a conversation going. He took a moment to look Joey over before deciding what he would say.
"You know, Amanda never mentioned that you were attractive. She always said what a good personality you had. I always figured that you were ugly, but you aren't." Joey stared at him in disbelief.
"Excuse me?"
"What? You're a very attractive woman. Can't a man acknowledge that a woman is attractive without getting the evil eye?"
"But you're going with Amanda!"
"So?"
"So?! I'm her friend, you're her boyfriend. You shouldn't be coming onto me!"
"Why not? She isn't here." Joey's mouth dropped open. Never in her life had she come across a more obnoxious man.
"That is no reason for you to be, for you to be hitting on me!" Pacey shrugged indifferently. "It's true. You should be able to keep it in your pants for at least more than a day after you've moved away from your girlfriend! Don't you have any morals?"
"Of course." He stopped for a moment because they were pulling into the diner's parking lot. "I know why you're being so anal," he said after a few minutes. "It's because you want to sleep with me, but the guilt thing is getting to you." Joey looked shocked.
"What?!"
"Yeah, that's it. You should reconsider though. I am great in bed. I would probably be the best sex of your life." He opened his door and got out. She did the same. They walked towards the door and he held it open for her. "I bet you've never had great sex," he said matter-of-factly as they walked in.
"I'll have you know that I've had plenty of good sex!" she said loudly. The whole restaurant went silent and every patron turned to stare at her. Pacey laughed and took a seat at a table for two. Joey looked around the room, obviously embarrassed and slid into the seat across from him.
"No, you haven't."
"I have."
"With who?"
"You wouldn't know him."
"Just tell me his first name."
"Sheldon." Pacey laughed loudly. "What's so funny? Sheldon and I had great sex." He laughed harder. "We did," she insisted.
"No, you didn't. You can't have great sex with a Sheldon."
"Why not?"
"Do it to me. Sheldon. Harder. Sheldon. Yes. Sheldon. Yes." Pacey annunciated the name every time he said it. "It's just not possible. Sheldon could be a great scientist, or a doctor. But he could never be a great humper and pumper." Joey shook her head. The waiter came over and asked them what they would like.
Joey unfolded the menu. "I would like the apple pie with ice cream. But, instead of vanilla I want strawberry. On the side. If you don't have strawberry cancel the ice cream. Instead I'd like whipped cream. Not the kind from the can though. The real thing. And if you don't have that I don't want the pie to be warm."
Pacey and the waiter stared at her, speechless. He attempted to write down as much of her order as he could. "And you?" he asked Pacey.
"Chocolate fudge sundae." The waiter nodded and walked away. Pacey turned to Joey. "What the hell was that?" It was obvious that their previous conversation was, for the moment at least, being dropped.
"Why order something any old way when you can get it exactly how you like it?" Pacey had no response.
After they had finished what they had eaten Joey pulled a calculator from her purse. She looked at the bill and began punching in numbers to find out what amount she should leave for the tip. Pacey stared at her incredulously and pulled out a five and two singles. Just enough to cover both the actual amount and the tip. He waited for Joey to finish and the two stood up to leave.
"You're a very strange woman, Joey." She glared at him and put on her coat. They left and got back into the car.
"So, you want to go to my place when we get to New York?" Pacey asked. Joey shook her head.
"Pacey, I already told you, we cannot sleep together. Why don't we just be friends, okay?" Pacey shook his head defiantly.
"It is not possible for a man and a woman to be friends. The sex thing always gets in the way."
"It is possible! I have plenty of male friends."
"No you don't."
"Yes, I do."
"You can't. The male female thing just doesn't work. I bet all of your so-called "friends" want to sleep with you. That means you could never really be their friend because all they're thinking about is getting into bed with you."
"Well, what if I don't want to sleep with them?"
"It doesn't matter, the sex thing is already out there."
"So, you don't want to be my friend?"
"It's not a matter of wanting to, I just can't."
They both realized that they had arrived in the city. Pacey looked out the window as she stopped. He pushed open the door and grabbed his things from the trunk. Joey rolled down her window.
"It's too bad really."
"Why's that?"
"You're the only person I know in New York." Pacey smiled and extended his hand to her.
"Have a nice life, Joey Potter." They shook hands.
