Pacey Witter trudged up Dawson Leery's ladder for about the one-thousandth time in his life. Though, this was probably the saddest he had ever been upon entering Dawson's window.

He had just gotten off the phone with Jack McPhee, his now ex-girlfriend's brother. Jack had been the one to deliver the news that would break Pacey's heart and his trust in most of the female species.

"I'm really sorry, Pacey. But he seems to make her very happy." Jack paused. "That's what you want, isn't it? For Andie to be happy?"

While choking back tears, Pacey had quickly agreed and said good-bye. After he hung up the phone, his tears flowed freely over the loss of his greatest love, Andie McPhee.

Now, he climbed through Dawson's window, eager to discuss his recently acquired broken heart.

"Hey," his voice filled with sudden disappointment and embarrassment, "Dawson."

Dawson removed his tongue from his girlfriend Joey Potter's mouth to mumble a slightly embarrassed hello. He didn't meet Pacey's eyes or look at him long enough to notice his pale features or tearstained face.

"Do you think you could come back later, Pace?" he said while glancing at Joey's flushed face.

Pacey knew it wasn't really an invitation to come back as much as it was an invitation to get out. He tried to conceal how hurt he felt while nodding and retreating back through the window.

As he descended the ladder he heard Dawson say a little too loudly, "I've got to start putting a lock on that thing."

Slowly, Pacey made his way towards the small dock extending out over the creek. He was surprised to see Jen Lindley, Dawson's neighbor and ex-girlfriend already sitting quietly at his destination. Pacey watched her for a moment as she looked sadly out over the water.

"Hi, Jen. Mind if I join you?" Pacey asked softly. Jen smiled slightly and patted the dock with her hand.

"Sure. I wouldn't mind some company." He did as he was told and swung his long legs over the edge of the dock.

"I apologize in advance," he started, "I don't think I'm going to make very good company."

Jen studied his face for a moment. Then she brought her fingers to his cheek.

"You've been crying." Pacey looked away, embarrassed.

"It's been a bad day." She nodded in agreement.

"So it has."

They sat quietly for a while before either one of them spoke. Pacey was the one to actually break the silence.

"Andie dumped me. She found a new boyfriend in Providence." Jen made a dismissive noise.

"Here's the great part. She couldn't even tell me herself. She had to have Jack do it for her," Pacey said bitterly.

Jen put her arm around his shoulder and sighed. Pacey leaned against her, happy to finally be close to someone again.

"Life is tough, Pacey," she said quietly. "It's just too damn tough." Pacey nodded solemnly.

"Any suggestions on how to make it easier, Oh Wise One?"

Jen smiled. "I've got a few." Then, she stood and took his hand and the two began to walk away from the dock.

Jen stopped walking when she reached a house that looked only vaguely familiar to Pacey. He tapped her shoulder, causing her to turn and stare at him.

"Jen, where exactly are we?"

"Think hard, Pace. You've been here before."

Pacey thought and finally realized that their destination had all along been Chris Wolfe's house.

"Won't Chris's parents wonder why..."

"They're on vacation with his little sister at the Jersey shore. Chris informed me that I had an open invitation until July the thirty-first," Jen said as she ascended the stairs to Chris's front door. She rang the bell before Pacey even had a chance to protest. Chris answered the door quite quickly.

"Jen. Good to see you," Chris said pleasantly. Then he looked at Pacey who was standing awkwardly beside Jen. "Surprised to say the least, Witter. What are you doing here?"

Pacey shrugged. "I honestly don't know. But, if I'm not welcome, I can always..."

Chris shook his head. "Not a problem, Pacey. My door is always open. Even for the likes of you." Pacey smiled sarcastically as Chris motioned for them to come in.

Jen looked around the place. "What, no party? I thought you had a very busy summer schedule."

Chris smiled. "It's a Monday night, Miss Lindley. I don't usually throw parties until at least Tuesday." Jen nodded, laughing.

"You still have drinks, I hope?" Chris nodded enthusiastically.

"For you, Jen? I would knock over a liquor store myself." He smiled and started to lead the way towards a small bar. Pacey began to walk back towards the front door.

"Pacey, where are you going?" Jen asked.

"Home. Sorry, guys. I don't drink." Chris laughed.

"Did you already forget, Jen? Pacey is on a short leash. Andie is still keeping you whipped, even when she's not here?" Chris laughed again. "Now that's what I call a real man."

Pacey felt his face go red. Suddenly, his inner daredevil emerged.

"For your information, Andie and I are through. I'm my own man now," Pacey said while walking towards the bar. "I can have a drink if I want one."

Chris slapped him on the back. "That's right, Witter. You can't let women control your life. If you do, you'll never have any fun."

With that he poured drinks for himself, Jen, and Pacey. Little did Pacey know that with one drink, many more would follow.
