Joey was sipping coffee and trying to watch TV, while searching the newspaper for jobs. Pacey opened the door to their apartment and laughed, finding her juggling the same three activities she always did. "Hey." Joey looked up.

"Pacey, hi!" She stood and placed her mug on the table. She wrapped her arms around his neck and kissed him lightly. "How was work? Oh, wait. I shouldn't ask, right?"

Pacey shook his head. "No. I'm glad you did. I got a raise!"

"What? Seriously?"

"Yeah! The Nolfos said I was doing a such a great job, they've decided to promote me and give me a raise!! Isn't that great?"

"Yeah! That's wonderful, Pace. I'm so proud of you." She gave him a big hug and smiled.

"So, what did you do today?" Joey froze. *What should I say? What did I do today? No, Pacey. Who did I do today? Stop it Joey. Maybe I should tell him the truth. Oh yeah that would go over real well. I screwed that hot new waiter, Pace.* "The usual." She hoped she sounded believable. *He has no reason to doubt what I say. I've never given him a reason. Until now.* She knew her smile had faded.

"What's wrong, Joe?"

"Nothing. Nothing at all."

Pacey sat up in bed that night. He looked at the alarm clock. His stomach was churning, the sheets were tangled, and he was bathed in sweat. He had another dream about Dawson. The night he died. He had walked into his hospital room and saw him. Hooked up to machines, absolutely lifeless. It was probably the scariest thing he could possibly imagine.

He wondered what had brought the dream on. Maybe his conversation with Mrs. Leery that afternoon. It had sparked so many painful memories. He wanted to wake Joey, but didn't have the heart. Instead he got out of bed to try and calm his nerves.

Joey knew what she was doing was wrong. She had promised herself it would be the last time. It had been three months since the first time she and Seth had started their affair. She found that she couldn't stop. Every time she tried to get rid of him he came up with such clever arguments. It had become harder and harder to keep her secret. Gretchen had decided she wouldn't be friends with Joey until it was over. Now the only person, other than Seth, was Erin. Erin was fascinated with the affair and loved hearing every detail.

Seth stared at her. She was amazing. He wasn't in love with her, but he loved being with her. She had many unattractive qualities and annoying habits that turned him off. He had the sinking feeling that she felt more for him then he did for her.

"Seth, can I ask you something?"

"Sure." He bent down to tie his shoe.

"Have you ever been in love?" He looked at her strangely. "No. Why?"

"What do you mean, 'no?'" Her hands were on her hips and she stared at him fiercely.

"What? I've never been in love. What's the problem with that?"

"You don't love me?" There were tears in her eyes. But as usual, Seth played it cool.

"No, I'm not. You and I are not boyfriend and girlfriend. I'm not your 'significant other.' That's what Pasty is for."

"Its Pac-ey. Not Pasty. So if I'm not your girlfriend, what am I?"

"You're someone I have sex with."

"Excuse me?! I'm just someone you have sex with?! Is there something wrong with you? Do you have any idea how horrible that sounds?! You are a pig!"

Seth smiled at her. "Thank you."

"Do you ever have relationships?" Now she sounded curious, almost fascinated.

"No, I don't."

"Why not?"

"Because of girls like you."

"Girls like me? What's that supposed to mean?"

"Let me tell you a little story. When I was in college, I wanted to be part of a fraternity. So I had to pledge of course. And they made me do stuff in order to see if I was man enough to be in the fraternity. They dared me to sleep with the president of another frat house's girlfriend. I did. They found out and accepted me.

I found out a real thrill came with sneaking around. So I did it more often. But the fact that a guy like me could just come along and seduce some girl with a boyfriend kind of scared me. I mean, if I could do it surely some guy could come along and do it with my girlfriend. All I had to do was suggest that I wanted to sleep with you and you agreed. That's why I don't believe in relationships. And that's why I don't want one."
