The room was pitch black. Dawson could hardly see his own hand in front of him. The silence was making him incredibly uneasy as well.
He took a deep breath and pushed onward anyway. Pacey had seemed so upset on the phone that morning. Dawson felt an amazing amount of guilt for not going over right away.
Why were all the lights off? Pacey's father said he was home. Maybe he's asleep. Dawson flicked on the bedside lamp and the room was filled with a warm glow. There was no sign of Pacey.
The floorboards creaked as Dawson paced the room, looking in the closet, the desk, on the night stand, for any sort of clue as to where Pacey had gone. Each sound made Dawson jump. Had Pacey's house always been so damn creepy?
He finally decided to venture into Pacey's personal bathroom. The door was closed. But Pacey always left it wide open. Maybe he was taking a shower. Dawson shook his head. Pacey's house was ancient, the pipes squeaked like nobody's business. You couldn't flush the toilet without the whole block hearing.
The knob twisted easily. It wasn't locked and the light wasn't on. Dawson reached up and down the wall until he found the switch. Before turning it up he noticed something. The throw-rug he was standing on was sopping wet. He pushed his foot around the floor. There was easily half an inch of water collected on the tile.
Light filled the tiny bathroom and Dawson gasped as he saw why the floor was so wet. The antique tub was filled to the brim and had a lifeless Pacey floating in it. The water wasn't clear, though, it was stained with bright red blood. Dawson choked back the vomit in his throat as he slowly moved towards his friend.
Pacey's wrists were deeply cut and Dawson saw one shining razor blade set neatly on the counter. Apparently Pacey had been more upset than Dawson had thought. Upset enough to take his own life.
Dawson began to back out of the room. He slipped and fell on his back into the thin layer of murky water, making a loud bang ring throughout the house. Footsteps sounded on the stairs as Dawson tried to stand. It was too slippery to do by himself.
"I'm in here," he cried, not recognizing his voice. He watched the mirror and saw Mr. Witter's face appear after a moment. Dawson cringed at the way his face contorted in pain and confusion as he caught glimpse of his youngest child.
"What the hell happened?" Dawson shook his head. This was all too hard to comprehend. Again he closed his eyes but saw the same thing he did when they were open. Pacey's naked, bluish body floating to the top of pink water. The razor flashed through his mind as Dawson vomited onto the floor.
He felt Mr. Witter's shaking hands help him to the sink as he emptied his stomach.
How could he have let this happen to his best friend?
