The Christian Era 1999
-- X -- Their Destiny Was Foreordained
the
apocalyptic super hero romance of love and friendship
Terminology in X
Some of these "definitions" are taken from X manga and
the X Perfect Book. Others are added by me to point out their
meanings. Do not take them literally as most of them are created
by the imaginative minds of the CLAMP artists.
Titles used in the manga and their given meanings:
Kouya (X1 to X2)
1. A missile/arrow released to declare war in ancient China.
2. The beginning of an event. Initiation. Starter. (See X3 p.6)
Nanayou (X3 to X6)

2. Seven types of radiance

Terms used in the story of X:
Anzoumiko (X5 p.135)
- The Hidden Priestess. Arashi is the anzoumiko of the Isejinguu. The sword that will come out from her hand is a sign of having a resourceful power.
Beast (X2 p.84, X7 pp.177-182)
- The gigantic machine right under the municipal government building of Tokyo. It is the central processor of all the digital data inside the city. Satsuki is able to communicate with it by will and physical contact. For some reason, CLAMP has associated the 666 monster with Qabala (the Tree of Life). (OK, so what really is this Qabala thing? Well, it is nothing more than the combination of the Tarot with the numerology derived from Hebrew, as the Jews like turning everything into numbers. Hail to thee! Albert Einstein! Hail to thee! Bill Gate! They are both Jewish, if you haven't realized.)
Chikara (X1 p. 60)
1. The moving of muscles in live animals. 2. Force as in Physics. 3. Grace, favor, benefit. 4. Effect. 5. Involuntary action. 6. Physical energy that can affect other objects or person. 7. Supernatural or extraordinary abilities.
- Chikara users include: Kamui, Fuuma, Subaru, Seiichiro (wind), Karen (fire) and Shogo (water, only in movie). (See also Ki)
Dragon of Heaven (X4 pp.100-105, X7 pp.162-163, X9 pp.38-41,150-151, X10 pp.149-151)
- the makers of kekkai and the protectors of the world.
Dragon of Earth (X4 pp.100-105, X7 pp.162-163, X9 pp.38-41, X10 pp.149-151)
- the breaker of the kekkai and thus the destructors of the world.
Futagobashi (X3 pp.21-31, X7 p.88,123,140-143, X8 p.30, X9 p.153, X10 pp.113-117)
1. Twin Stars. Two stars that revolve about the same centre. Binary Stars. 2. Gemini. 3. Twins.
- The twin star of Kamui works as the substitute to replace the empty place NOT taken by Kamui Shirou. Fuuma is Kamui's Twin Star. As a result, Fuuma becomes the Dragon of Earth once Kamui has decided to be a Dragon of Heaven.
Gobousei (X2 p.176, X7 p.12,148-151, X8 p.22-23 X10 p.20)
1. Five-pointed Star. 2. Pentacle as in Tarot. Magic symbol.
- not only is it related to Subaru, Seishirou and Nataku, the pentacle is also how the CLAMP Campus constructed. It is itself a seal that gives protection.
- the inverted pentacle is Seishiro's symbol. It symbolizes the devil in Christianity.
- Subaru uses the pentacle as his kekkai.
In (X2 p.69)
1. Seal. 2. Symbol used as identification. Stamp. 3. Printing. 4. Seal used by occultists; either to mark or prohibit something/someone or to make a vow (with powers of spirits).
- The Dragon of Heaven are also known as the Seven Seals because they can make kekkai.
Isejinguu (X5 p.135)
- The shrine of Shinto in Mieken. A famous shrine since the time of Edo. Arashi belongs to this shrine and is its anzoumiko.
Inuki (X6 pp.174-182, X13 pp.28-32)
- a dog spirit. Invisible to normal people, the inuki guard and protect each member of the Mitsuminejinjya. Yuzuriha's inuki can change itself into a sword.
Kagenie (X4 pp.25-28, X10 pp.137-145)
- Sacrificial shadow. Kamui's mother and aunt are from the Magami family, whose responsibility is to act as a substitue for another important person and suffer any accident or misfortune that person encounters. Kamui's mother Tohru died in burning flame because she is the kagenie of Earth, which is suffering the Greenhouse Effect.
Kamui (X4 p.115, X13 p.43)
See definition at the top
- The dual meaning of the name also describes Kamui having two possible future. He could either choose to become a Dragon of Heaven or a Dragon of Earth. (See also Unmei)
Kekkai (X1 p.188, X4 pp.109-112, X8 p.85, X13 p.36)
See definition at the top
- only the Dragons of Heaven can form kekkai. Each of them uses a different shape: Sorata's kekkai is a cube; Subaru uses the five-pointed star (see Gobousei); Karen's is a cross; Yuzuriha forms a circular cone; Arashi's is a (trapeziodal) pyramid.
- a kekkai is set up to protect the things inside so that when the dragons use their supernatural powers, nothing would be damaged. A kekkai disappears when the maker has decided to remove it, or when the maker dies or badly injured. When a kekkai disappears due to death of a Dragon of Heaven, everything inside the kekkai will be destroyed as in an earthquake.
- there are many kekkai in the world set up by the ancestors, and Tokyo is the key of all these kekkai. Therefore, if Tokyo were to be destroyed, the world would end with it.
Ki
1. Air. 2. Weather. 3. Gas. 4. Breath. 5. Atmosphere. 6. State of being alive. 7. Mood. 8. Psychic or spiritual energy.
- Seishirou, Sorata and Kusanagi often uses ki to attack. (See also Chikara)
Kouyasan (X2 pp.116-117)
- located in the Keii Mountains in Wakayamaken, also the mount of Shingotoshuu where the Buddhist temple Kinkomineji is situated. It was where Sorata came from. The master Hoshimi used Shukuyoudo (a kind of stargazing related to Buddhism) and know that Kamui had returned to Tokyo.
Mitsuminejinjya (X5 p.17)
- a shrine whoes memebers are protected by inuki. Yuzuriha belongs to this religious body.
Nataku (X6 pp.64-68)
- the deity in Chinese mythology who doesn't have a soul. (Actually, Nataku is a mighty prince in Buddhism with three faces and eight arms.) Nataku becomes an artificial lifeform in X. The three flower petals on his forehead form the symbol of a lotus, and he can manipulate his shawl to form a pentacle (see Gobousei).
Onmyouji (X5 p.58)
- one that performs onmyoujyutsu (the magic of Yin-Yang). Such is an art of making use of the Five Elements thought by the ancient Chinese to be of great importance: Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal and Water. However, onmyouji in CLAMP's stories are associated with spirits. The Sumeragi clan are onmyouji who helps removing unclean spirits, whereas the Sakurazuka clan uses onmyoujyutsu to kill people.
Sakurazuka (X5 p.12,58)
- the infamous clan of onmyouji that perform killings by using psychi and magic powers. Though often known as "Sakurazukamura," the job is actually done by the sole heir of the clan, Seishirou. The clan would mark their target with an invisible five-pointed star (see Gobousei) before they carry out their mission.
Shinken (X6 p.69)
See definition at the top
- a sword that is born carnally by the womb of a woman. There are now two Shinken, one is born by Fuuma's mother Saya, and the other one by Kamui's aunt Tokigo. It is therefore made of biological materials that also make up the body of a human being. Both Kamui (Kamui and Fuuma) has his own sword. (see Togakushijinjya)
Shikishin (X1 p.26, X3 p.101, X6 p.21)
- a magic performed by an onmyouji that can turn magical papers into living figures
Sumeragiichimon (X8 p.63)
- the foremost onmyouji family in Japan. Subaru being its successor of the 13th generation. The Sumeragiichimon performs only good magic and have been identified as the opponent of the Sakurazukamuara.
Togakushijinjya (X2 pp.124-127, X6 pp.157-170)
- the "Shrine of the Hidden Sword" guarded by the Monou family. Both shinken were born there.
Toushiroyakkyou
- the secret scientific laboratory where Nataku is embodied. The president of the company has much hope in Nataku because Nataku is made from the DNA similar to his granddaughter. The logo of this company does remind me of Startrek. ^_^
Unmei (X4 p.125-133, X p.34, X9 pp.36-37, X10 p.123)
1. The action of human beings believed to be controled by some supernatural power. Fate. 2. Foreordained future.
- For Kamui, he has two future for him to choose from. And even he has already chosen to be a Dragon of Heaven, Kotori still says the future hasn't been decided.
Yakusoku (X7 p.68)
1. Things that must happen in the future. A promise. 2. Law. Things that have been decided. 3. Fate. Destiny.
- the Dragons of Earth see the End of the World as an appointed time when their wishes and desires could be fulfilled, while the Dragons of Heaven work hard to protect the earth from destruction. Yakusoku can be thought of as something related to the time in the future and the will to live on.
Yumemi (X1 p.136, X7 p.132,138)
See definition at the top
- both Hinoto and Kakyou are Yumemi. Kanoe is not a true Yumemi, but since she is Hinoto's twin sister, she can spy upon Hinoto's dreams. Kotori was later known to be born a Yumemi, but she hadn't realized this talent until she died. (See also Yumewatari)
Yumewatari (X7 p.64)
- getting into another person's dream from one's dream. This is different from yumemi, which allows one to see the future. Kanoe practices yumewatari to see her sister Hinoto's dreams. Yumemi has the power to practice yumewatari. Examples are Hinoto showing the future to Kamui, and Kakyou saving Kotori from her nightmare.
