About the Speakers:

Katrina Montinola was the director of engineering in Pointcast, Oracle, E-Stamp and Chemconnect - all pioneering internet companies in their time. Katrina graduated from the Georgia Institute of Technology with a BS in Computer Science. She is also the Secretary of the Science and Technology Advisory Council (STAC-SFO) and a founding core member of the Brain Gain Network. Katrina will talk about what it takes to form, organize, manage, and keep motivated a highly successful software organization in the hyper-competitive US Software industry. She is open to answering other questions on the intricacies of Software start-ups.

 

Dennis Fernandez is Managing Partner of Fernandez & Associates LLP, a leading Patent Strategy firm in Silicon Valley. His law firm specializes in developing defensive and offensive patent strategies for early-stage biotechnology and semiconductor technologies. Dennis is a Registered U.S. Patent Attorney. He graduated in Northwestern University with a B.S. in Electrical Engineering and received his law degree from Suffolk University. He was a Venture Capitalist at Walden Group, and Vertex Management and a general counsel at NeoParadigm Labs (chip start-up). He is a Lecturer at University of California (Ext) and Stanford University. Currently, he is a board member of the Editorial Advisory for Red Herring Magazine and a NASA Technology Incubator. He participated in industry speaking panels on patents

and technology. Dennis is going to talk about the formation of start-ups based on RD&E Intellectual Property (IP). Being a patent attorney and former VC himself, he will dwell on the creation and legal protection of IP.

  

Katrina and Dennis are more than willing to spend the Open Forum period in a free flowing discussion on how the Philippine based technopreneurs can best utilize the engineering talent to form successful high-tech ventures. They are more than willing to also answer the questions of individual engineers on their career options.

“Lessons from an IC Designer and Venture Capital”                                                           20 June 2003 (venue TBA)

The Advanced Science and Technology Institute, together with Synopsys and Ateneo de Manila University, is organizing the Philippine Microchip Seminar # 2 entitled “Lessons from an IC Designer and Venture Capital”. This is the second in the series of seminars aimed at generating interest in the various developments of the microelectronics industry through enriching activities. The seminar is tentatively scheduled on the 20th of June 2003. This initiative is among ASTI's strategies in catalyzing advancements in microelectronics research in the country, specifically in enhancing skills and capabilities of Filipino IC designers.

Featured speaker is Mr. C.C. Tay, the vice president of Fortune Venture Investment Group of Singapore. Mr. Tay specializes in investments in fabless IC sectors and he is very much willing to share his experiences and insights with the venture capitalists in the country.

Featured Balik-Scientist Speaker - Greg Tangonan, PhD                                                    April / June 2003 (planned)

Greg completed his PhD in Applied Physics from the California Institute of Technology (CalTech), retired as R&D chief (Communications & Photonics) of Hughes Corporation in Los Angeles, CA and is now w/the Ateneo de Manila faculty. He is also a world renowned expert on MEMS (Micro Electro Mechanical Systems), and runs a startup called Wireless MEMS, Inc. He has also asked to speak in a future session of KatipunanBGN. Dr. Tangonan is co-author of >100 published papers and presentations in the fields of fiber optics, integrated optics, laser spectroscopy and amorphous materials. Dr. Tangonan has 38 U.S. patents. He has presented numerous papers at international forums in optoelectronics. Dr. Tangonan is a member of the Optical Society of America, IEEE Lasers and Electro-Optics Society and Sigma Xi. He has served as a Reviewer for several major Journals and served on Advisory Boards for Research Programs at UCSB, UCLA, UCB, UCSD, and Princeton University.

Dr. Tangonan has received several major awards for his work. Among them are two R&D 100 Awards for New Products and Technologies. The first R&D 100 Award in 1994 was for Secure Fiber Optics Technology and the second R&D 100 Award was for Optical Networking Node Technology for All-Optical Switched Networks. Dr. Tangonan received several Published Paper- of-the-Year awards from HRL Laboratories. Dr. Tangonan received the Distinguished Inventor Award from HRL in 2000, 2001, and 2002.

Venture Capital Regular Weekly Visits to the Diliman-Katipunan “Silicon Alley”         planned kickoff April  2003

A group of individuals from venture capital firms have agreed to hold office in the Diliman-Katipunan “Silicon Alley” for half a day at least 1x/2x a month.
