Scope and
Sequence
10/1/07
I chose to do my
scope and sequence for AGSC 261, Introduction to Horticulture Science. Most
schools have at least two teachers and students are able to follow a few
different paths. These include: agricultural mechanics, animal science, and
horticulture. I would love to teach the horticulture side of agriculture
science for my students because many would benefit from basic horticulture and
floral design courses. AGSC 261 is the logical first step for these courses because
it teaches the basics of the horticulture industry and allows students to
become familiar with plant terms and get hands on experience. Some students
will also be interested in completing their SAEs
through horticulture.
TEKS does not have
many items that must be taught, so this will give me plenty of time to be sure
that students comprehend the lessons. The first unit that I will teach is
discussing safety practices because students need to know their boundaries
before they begin working. After safety, I will take two units to cover
classification and identification of plants. We will go to the greenhouse and
work with the plants to give the students real world application. After this
unit we will go over growing and propagating plants. For these lessons we will
go the greenhouse to work with soils, nutrients, and other information
necessary for these topics. The next unit will allow students to think about
how necessary and diverse the horticulture field is. We will then work on SAEs and job preparation. At the end of these units,
students will get to use what they have learned all semester to create projects
for their final grades. For their projects, students will create and mange
their own business in the horticulture industry and give a presentation
discussing it with the class. I gave three weeks for this last part so that
students can work on their projects in class and have plenty of time to
present.
